Sprites and Midgets: an abundance of cheap thrills
For the July issue of C&SC, James Page tested the whole family, from the
Austin-Healey 'Frogeye' Sprite to the rubber-bumpered MG Midget 1500. He
discovered there is little to rival the Brit sportsters for affordable fun.

Incredible gas turbine Rover-BRM back at Le Mans
Bonkers gas turbine-powered racing car revisits Le Mans more than 40 years
after it was campaigned by Graham Hill and Jackie Stewart. Here it is being
The Rover-BRM was the result of a collaboration between Rover and British
Racing Motors during the 1960s, and became the first gas turbine-powered
car to race at Le Mans. It ran at La Sarthe in 1963 and 1964 in an
experimental class of its own, but it wasn't until the 1965 race that was
given a race number and allowed to compete against other cars.
The car was recently recommissioned by a team at the Heritage Motor Museum,
Gaydon and carried out parade laps at the 2014 Le Mans Classic, as well as
winning the Prix d'Excellence at the event's concours.

1971 Volkswagen Karmann Ghia Engine Start
First time starting up the 2333 cc engine (91x84mm) that I installed in my
wife's freshly restored 1971 Volkswagen Karmann Ghia convertible. Yes, I
know my coil is installed upside-down. The after-market wire harness was
installed with too little slack to reach a downward-pointing coil. This is

This is a really beautiful example! The engine would be the 1500 c.c. flat
four with overhead valves and solid lifters...same engine that powered the
venerable Beetle. True independent rear suspension this year. A closed
coupe version was also available. It added Volkswagen dependability to a
work of art from Karmann-Ghia!
