Onboard Birkett 2011 - Malcolm Edeson Toyota MR2 (MK2) Fastest Lap (2:34) & Race Finish

http://www.driver-coaching.com - Onboard with me on the very last lap of the Birkett 6Hr Relay held at Silverstone GP Circuit (Historic Layout). Despite traffic this turned out to be my fastest race lap. Haivng not really driven the car before the race and not having much of an idea of best tyre pressures etc. I found I was running them too high. In my 2nd run I dropped them a good 3-4 psi each end and they were much better. Unfortunately at the start of my 2nd stint I suffered a broken wheel and had to limp back to the pits. Once the wheel had been replace I did 3 more laps, made up 8-10 places and on this the last lap set a best time of 2:34.89 which looking at the results was the best time of any of the regular MR2 Championship cars (although my student and 2011 Championship winner James Cross said he also did a 2:34). This was despite carrying 20ltrs of fuel more than I needed as I had fueled for 1hr as there was the possibility I'd have to run that long. Video is captured on a Video4 setup from Race-Technology. The race as red flagged after a massive crash on the grid where a number of cars were involved. The Birkett is an odd race as it runs to a handicap system. Despite being one of the quicker cars on the circuit Garys BMW started in 46th (out of 63). This was good for video viewers as we see LOTS of overtaking during this session. Onboard 'Lucky Escape' Broken Wheel, Birkett 2011 Session 2, Malcolm Edeson Fast Lap & Race Finish
This is from my 2nd session in the Birkett 6Hr Relay. A lap or two into my stint and I felt a fairly strong vibration from the front of the car. Initially I thought this was pickup (rubber marbles which become attached to the tyre and cause vibration). Then it got worse and I suspected a puncture but didnt feel like one. Then it got even worse and I limped back to the pits. A VERY good job I did as the front offside wheel had cracked clean through 3 of it's 5 spokes. I was very lucky. This is after the front wheel had been chnaged and what remains of my 2nd stint. The marshals were slow releasing us from the pitlane which was a shame as the car was much better with lower tyre pressures and I was flying. In this very short stint I must have got past at least 10 cars and in doing so set the fastest lap of the race. It was actually getting quite dark as the race was delayed owing to a huge crash off the startline. Can't really tell on the video so much as the cameras adjust for the low light. Was a really fun, but very confusing race. We finished 31st :( Feauture on this video you can see the new DASH4 Pro from Race-Technology. MR2 Championship Donington July 2011 - MR-S Roadster Malcolm Edeson Full Race Onboard
http://www.driver-coaching.com - Thanks to Rogue Motorsport for the opportunity to race thier MR2 Roadster in the UK MR2 Championship. The Roadster runs in the series in a different class to the more powerfull Mk2 MR2. I'd qualified 2nd in class but was expecting the usual green flag/formation lap when I noticed the red lights came on, taken completely by surprise the race started and I got mugged by multiple cars including one of the other Roadsters. This meant I mainly was in a group with just the Mk2s. I could make up on them in the corners but their speed was such it was very difficult to attack and defending was virtually impossible on Donington 2 long straights. Never the less there were a few overtakes under braking and I did enjoy driving the car. I finished 3rd in class. There was a Red Flag half way through which reduced the race to around 20 mins (was suposed to be 30) and even a crash after the red! Toyota MR2 Spyder (2000-2005)
Toyota MR2 Spyder micro-review. The MR2 Spyder is the third generation in the Toyota MR2 lineup. The 1.8-liter engine propels the car to 60 miles in about 7 seconds, which is not very quick these days, but the MR2 is not about drag racing, it is about agility. With the engine in the middle the MR2 has immediate go-kart reactions, but is harder to control at the limit than Mazda Miata. The suspension is stiff, the steering is precise and the brakes are amazing. The controls are conveniently placed (save for door windows' buttons). There is a CD player and even a tape deck but no auxiliary audio input or USB socket. Legroom is generous and headroom is decent. If you want unlimited headroom then just drop the soft top, there is no need to leave the car. Because the engine is in the back, the trunk is in the front. The trunk opens with a latch hidden in the glove box. The trunk is tiny and half of it is already taken with a spare wheel. Still, a couple of six-packs will fit... if you take bottles out of the carton. Additional space is available behind the seats. With the top down it can hold half-a-dozen umbrellas, two shoe boxes or a small camera bag. Still, the MR2 Spyder has use in real life. The passenger seatbelt has a locking mechanism, and the airbag can be turned off. This allows installing a child seat, even a back-facing one, without risking to kill your child with a deployed airbag. So here you have it: the MR2 Spyder is the perfect car for a boy who have overgrown cheesy battery-powered plastic cars.
