This is a full rotisserie restoration of a 59,000 mile 440 6-Pack car that
was originally bought from Cal Worthington Chrysler Dodge Plymouth in Long
Beach, California and was optioned as you see it today: In Plum Crazy
purple livery, white interior, 440 6-Pack and factory four speed manual
transmission. What could be better?
Dave Witter bought the Road Runner on December 15, 1969. It was a car that
was returned to the Cal Worthington after another couple decided they
wanted an automatic GTX rather than a 4-speed car! They accumulated about
158 miles on the car over their three day ownership! Dave Witter then
bought it as a returning serviceman in the military. He paid $2,936 for it
and later drove it home to rural Missouri. He kept the Road Runner for 37
After 37 years of ownership Dave sold his Road Runner to our consignment
client Jim from Yucaipa, California. Jim set out on a complete and thorough
restoration of every component of the car by using a rotisserie and all
local expert resources. The details of the restoration include:
-Complete rebuild of the factory warranty replacement block (correct 1970
440 block without numbers) with a NOS crank, rods and pistons, hardened
value seats, manly valves and springs. Jim installed a Mopar Performance
purple shaft cam (484 lift) that helps the Road Runner produce 475 hp and
435 ft lbs of torque. It has an Edelbrock intake and three Holly carbs as
it was originally equipped. It is now equipped with headers and a 2.5″ Exhaust.
-3:54 posi rear-end was rebuilt with all new components by Curry
Enterprises and the original Hemi 18 spline 4-speed transmission was fully
rebuilt with new gears and shafts.
-The brakes, front end, radiator and fuel tank are all new and rebuilt and
the wiring is all new from M&H.
-The paint was done by Mike Face in San Bernardino using Sherwin Williams
two stage paint and, again, using a full rotisserie. The correct white
interior is all new from Legendary interior. The glass was also fully

1970 Plymouth RoadRunner 440 6 pack
1970 brought new front and rear end looks to the basic 1968 body, and it
would prove to be another success. Updates included a new grille, leather
seats, hood, front fenders, quarter panels, single-piston Kelsey-Hayes disc
brakes (improved from the rather small-rotor Bendix 4 piston calipers of
'68 - '69 ), and even non-functional scoops in the rear quarters. The
design and functionality of the Air Grabber option was changed this year to
increase both efficiency and the "intimidation factor". A switch below the
dash actuated a vacuum servo to slowly raise the forward-facing scoop,
exposing shark-like teeth on either side. "High Impact" colors, with names
like In-Violet, Moulin Rouge, and Vitamin C, were options available for
that year. The 1970 Road Runner and GTX continued to be attractive and
popular cars. The engine lineup was left unchanged although a heavy-duty
three-speed manual became the standard transmission, relegating the
four-speed to the option list along with the TorqueFlite automatic. This
was to be the second and last year of the Road Runner convertible, with
only 834 made. These cars are considered more valuable than the 1969
version due to a better dash, high impact colors and more options including
the new high-back bucket seats shared with other Chrysler products which
featured built-in headrests.
The relatively popular 440 Six Barrel was relegated to option status for
1970. The 1969 "M" Code Edelbrock aluminum intake was replaced by a
factory-produced cast iron piece; however, due to a porous casting, there
was a recall early in the iron intake-equipped 440+6 run, and these were
supposed to be replaced with the more-desirable Edelbrock intake from the
Sales of the '70 Road Runner dropped by more than 50 percent over the
previous year to around 41,000 units (about 1,000 ahead of Pontiac's GTO
but still about 13,000 units behind Chevy's Chevelle SS-396/454). This
would also be the last year of the road runner convertible with 834 total
production. Only 3 hemi (R) code road runner convertibles were built. The
declining sales of Road Runner and other muscle cars were the result of a
move by insurance companies to add surcharges for muscle car policies -
making insurance premiums for high-performance vehicles a very expensive
proposition. Also, Plymouth introduced another bargain-basement muscle car
for 1970, the compact Duster 340 which was powered by a 275-horsepower 340 Magnum V8
which in the lighter-weight compact A-body could perform as well if not
better than a 383 Road Runner. Furthermore, the Duster 340 was priced even
lower than the Road Runner and its smaller engine qualified it for much
lower insurance rates.
The Chevy engine comment was a joke.

Envisioned by its owner as the perfect mix of classic muscle car attitude
and first class modern performance, this 1969 Plymouth Road Runner is one
of the finest Mopar pro-tourers we've ever featured!
This Road Runner's complete rotisserie restoration began when Steve Koepke
of Classic Ventures in Woodstock, Illinois meticulously stripped its solid
original body, welded up a set of high quality quarters and block sanded
every one of its facets until he had a smooth, consistent canvas. Once that
canvas was fully prepped from top to bottom, a slick coat of Charcoal Gray
urethane was expertly applied under bright red, horizontal pin stripes and
buffed to the kind of brilliant wet-look shine that can only be achieved
with today's advanced paint technology. The result is one super slick Mopar
muscle car which wraps brutal performance in killer good looks!
Raise the wide, Charcoal hood and you'll find a killer 500 cubic inch
monster block which takes this Mopar from 'very appealing' to 'MUST HAVE'.
At the top of that engine, a simple chrome breather funnels wind from a
re-usable filter element to a giant Demon 850 carburetor that's juiced by
fresh stainless fuel lines. At the base of that carburetor, an Indy dual
plane intake sends a rich air/fuel mixture into aluminum Indy 440EZ-1
cylinder heads that are equipped with both Crane Cams hydraulic roller
lifters and Harland Sharp roller rocker arms. Those heads are bolted to a
familiar 440 block that's been bored 0.30 over and equipped with a complete
Eagle stroker kit which includes an Eagle steel crank, Eagle H-beam
connecting rods, SRP pistons with Speed Pro rings and Clevite bearings. The
car's massive 11 to 1 compression is managed by a Competition hydraulic
roller camshaft that's hooked to a Cloyes timing chain. And spent gases are
efficiently expelled through a slick set of TTI ceramic coated long tube
headers. Fire is supplied by an MSD Pro-billet distributor which shoots
sparks through high performance Taylor plug wires. And cooling comes
courtesy of a heavy duty aluminum radiator which sits in front of two quick
spinning electric puller fans.
Behind the big bore engine you'll find a slick shifting Centerforce
hydraulic clutch that's connected to a Tremec 5-speed transmission and a
stalwart Ford nine inch limited slip rear end which is complete with a
Strange aluminum center section, Strange axle shafts and new 3.73 gears.
Naturally, the car's old-school front torsion bar and rear leaf spring
suspension has been exchanged for a more competent independent front, four
link rear set up. And that new suspension is augmented with tubular control
arms, a thick front sway bar, adjustable QA1 coil over shocks, fresh power
rack and pinion steering and a Wilwood brake system which includes 11 inch
slotted discs at all four corners. At the center of the car, custom
fabricated, and custom welded, subframe connectors ensure the buff engine's
ample torque doesn't manifest itself as unfortunate twist. And at the
corners of the car, power flows through a sweet set of 18 inch, solid
aluminum wheels that are wrapped in aggressive 245/40 front and 285/40 rear
BF Goodrich G-Force T/A radials.
Open this Plymouth's big, solid doors and sit down inside a cockpit where
the timeless good looks of American muscle meld seamlessly with tasteful
upgrades and modern conveniences. The custom leather and suede seats, which
were supplied by Addison Auto Interiors of Addison, Illinois, are firm and
feel much more upscale than traditional Mopar hardware. At the bottom of
those seats, fresh Maroon carpet props a chrome Hurst shifter under a faux
carbon fiber pistol grip handle. In front of the seats the car's pristine
Maroon dash hangs a custom gauge panel, which is complete with stylish Auto
Meter American Muscle gauges, beside a remote controlled Kenwood CD player
and traditional buttons for the car's heat and air conditioning system. At
the sides of the seats, custom Maroon and Black door panels hang pliable
armrests between fresh stainless trim, new chrome window cranks and bright
chrome door handles. And in front of the driver, a familiar Mopar Tuff
Wheel spins around a rebuilt original steering column.
