69 Plymouth Road Runner Test Drive with FTI 9.5" 4000 Stall Converter
Installed a new FTI 9.5" 4000 RPM stall converter in my 69 Plymouth Road Runner and decided to take her out for a little test spin to practice launching. Unlike the stock converter, this one really gets you going off the line, but it's harder to judge when you're spinning or slipping the converter. I definitely need more seat time to work things out. I didn't bother ringing out top gear because of the poor condition of the tires. Also, the bumper mounted GoPro helped me spot a gas leak (checkout the diff getting soaked after the first burnout) When I brought her back, she didn't leak a drop, so I put her on the lift and found a 3 inch rubber hose for the vapor return line has a hole in it. EZ fix. Next on the mod list will be a tube style high capacity cooling pan and either a larger or second transmission cooler just to be safe on those hot days.





Wind Tunnel Test: "43" 1971 Petty Superbird
Gary & Pam Beineke built this race version G-Series Superbird-stable mate to the K&K Daytona-a next generation, 'what-if' tribute to Petty and the '71 NASCAR season that never was. They took the car to Mooresville NC "Race City USA" to test in the A2 Wind Tunnel. Although a full scale version was never built in 1971 Chrysler performed wind tunnel development on a 3/8 scale model until NASCAR made a rule change for the 71 season that would ban the wing cars from competition. Gary Romberg is the technical director at AeroDyn & A2, and also one of the original aerodynamicists that worked on the wing cars back when they were developed at Chrysler. Notes and data from the 3/8 model were donated to the Wing Warriors Car Club and the Beineke's built their car based off data results from those wind tunnel tests in the 70's. Romberg was on hand to see a project he worked on over 40 years ago get built into a full scale version.
