Testing the Mercedes-Benz SL-Class, the 2014 Mercedes SL 500.
With its fine materials, the Mercedes SL gives you immediately a luxurious
feeling. You can see, this car was perfectly finished with great attention
to detail. In German cars, the clearance is always a big matter, the small
gaps between two elements -- which are supposed to be exactly even. We can
see this perfect symmetry here, for example. I do like the clear, elegant
design lines in the front. But the media panel looks not quite up to date
with its square plastic buttons.
The "Cockpit Management and Data System" COMAND can be ordered with
internet access. A DVD changer is also available as an option. I really
don't know, why anyone would still use DVD's in a car, but nevertheless.
One feature I like best, is the panoramic glass roof with adjustable
lighting, called MAGIC SKY CONTROL. The transparent roof switches to light
or dark at the push of a button. It had been tested in Death Valley in
California and the result was, that with dimmed roof, you reduce the heat
radiation by the sun about the factor twenty. How does it work? Imagine
particles inside the glass that stand in a clear row and let sunshine
through, as long as an electric current is induced. When I push the button,
the electric current fades, the particles get all mixed up -- and prevent
light and heat from shining through.
This sixth generation of the SL also offers that hard roof that can be
retracted into the boot using an electrohydraulic mechanism to save space,
which converts the SL in a few seconds into a roadster or a coupé. In less
than 20 seconds it opens or closes. The disadvantage is of course, that you
have to stand still. In that case, a soft top is better -- but not that
durable over the years.
While driving, the first things I immediately notice is the exceptional
riding comfort. You have a extremely smooth ride, no matter if you are in
the Sport or Comfort mode. Actually the difference doesn't turn out to be
big. I can just repeat, the suspension is maybe the most superior thing
about this car and sets standards.
The sportiness comes to play, when you push the throttle and circle it
around the corner. You feel a little bit of rear wheel spin -- that's just
super fun, and even works with stability control turned on.
The electronics just allow you that little spin to have the fun and still
keep being in control. However, you can also turn off the stability control
to be able to spin it around more freely. The SL is powerful in
accelerating and effortlessly superior across all speeds and nimble on
winding roads, like here in Southern France.
On the negative side, there is the indirect steering which lets it step
down from the league of pure sportscars. So sportscar lovers might be
annoyed by this, however, you should prefer the smooth ride of a grand GT
with sporty elements.
Mercedes always wants to stress its safety features, and actually, for a
roadster, there are a lot of them in it. For example, we have the blind
spot warner, giving you a signal when cars are approaching at the sides
from behind -- erm, does that actually happen when driving this car? ;-)
Furthermore, the so called Adaptive Brake firstly warns you when you are
getting to close to a car -- with a visual and a sound hint. That can be
practical, if you are overtaking a vehicle, turn your head shortly to take
a look around and in that second the vehicle in front of you brakes hardly.
In that case, the sound
catches your attention 1 second earlier and you can start the braking
process right away. Also, in an emergency braking situation the braking
lights are flashing to warn the car behind you.
And my favorite: The Active Parking Assist. It automatically manoeuvres the
car into a parking space using ultrasound sensors. We will see how it
The current SL500 has a 4.7 Liter V8 under the bonnet. With its twin turbo, it reached 435 horsepower -- and Boosts you from 0 to 100 kilometres or 0 to 60
miles in 4,6 seconds.
In Germany, there is also the smaller SL400 available, it recently replaced
the SL350 now delivering 333 horsepower from a 3 Liter
V6. If you are OK with that, you can at least save 20.000 Euros stepping
down. The SL 500 however starts at 120.000 Euros in Germany, at 80.000
Pounds in the UK and at 106.000
Dollars in the US -- where you can only get the SL 550 with 429 horse
power. No clue why it is called 550 although having less horsepower.

The Gallery in Brummen, The Netherlands. This classic car dealer is one of
the largest in the world. We took the car for a little spin! We love to

The Mercedes-Benz R107 and C107 automobiles were produced from 1971 through
1989 and were described by many as one of the best looking cars
Mercedes-Benz produced to date, being the second longest single series
ever produced by the automaker, after the G-Class. They were sold under the
SL (R107) and SLC (C107) model names. The R107 replaced the W113 SL-Class
in 1972 and was replaced by the R129 SL-Class in 1989. The SLC replaced the
W111 Coupé in 1971 and was replaced by the C126 S-class coupe in 1981.

An exquisite Mercedes-Benz 380SL with an amazing 15,860 miles from new.
Light-alloy bonnet, front spoiler, easy-closing doors, retractable soft
top, impact zones, anti-burst locks, heat insulating panoramic safety
glass, strengthened windscreen pillars, individually adjusted temperature
zones, headlamp adjustment, econometer, non-slip steering wheel, fire
extinguisher, vacuum central locking, parking lights, power assisted
steering. Factory fitted options include, rear child seats, Tempomat
cruise control, headlamp wash/wipe, anti-lock braking system, alloy wheels,
paint coat preservation.
This incredible classic Mercedes-Benz 380SL is beautifully finished in rare
standard Black (code 040). The original factory paintwork retains a
lustrous deep mirror shine owing to the optional paint coat preservation
applied at build stage. A tiny stone chip to the nearside front wing and a
mark to the bottom tip of the driver's door are barely noticeable. All
panels are wonderfully straight with even gaps and uphold the truly
graceful and chic lines of the iconic R107 design. The chrome bumpers and
adjoining rubber trim are in beautiful factory fresh condition, aside from
a small area of damage to the rubber on the rear offside corner. The black
hood, commensurate with the ultra-low mileage is clean, tight and totally
free from rips or tears, as are the side and rear hood windows. An
immaculate colour coded hard top is supplied with the car. The totally
standard unmodified engine bay displays all the correct identification and
information plates as well as factory applied stickers. A fastidiously
preserved and cherished showpiece.
Large wide-opening doors give convenient access to a genuine four seat
coupe with anatomically contoured front seats offering ultra comfort. The
spacious interior is tastefully upholstered in Mercedes grey leather and
fabric arrangement (interior code 058) with matching colour scheme carpets.
The seats are in impeccable order in keeping with a vehicle of such low
mileage. The plastic piping to one side of the passenger seat headrest is
mildly discoloured due to sun exposure. The grey deep pile carpeting
throughout is immaculate. The wood veneer is beautifully preserved and
all switchgear retains an unworn showroom fresh feel. All the gauges,
controls and electrics operate perfectly, including the optional Tempomat
cruise control and headlamp wash/wipe system. A relaxed, well equipped
and ergonomically designed environment.
ENGINE & TRANSMISSION
The eight cylinder engine in V8 configuration with Bosch mechanical fuel
injection displaces 3,839cc, and its legendary durability epitomises the
Mercedes-Benz renown for unrivalled build quality and engineering
wonderment. A top speed of 134mph is effortless and 0-60 in 9.8 seconds is
achieved in the most civilised manner. This gloriously smooth and powerful
unit is mated to the optional four-speed torque convertor transmission
which is seamless in operation. An altogether impeccable driving
WHEELS, TYRES & BRAKES
Optional 15 hole light-alloy wheels are pristine, free from damage and are
shod in matching 205/70 R14 tyres with masses of tread remaining.
Dual-circuit servo assisted brakes with discs to all four wheels and
optional anti-lock braking assistance offer a further insight to how
technologically advanced the R107 model was. The front discs are
internally ventilated and provide excellent stopping power. The parking
brake has separate drums and shoes to hold the car firmly.
This beautiful example has covered an extraordinarily low 15,860 miles from
new with just four keepers throughout its lifetime. Registered new on 7th
March 1983 by Mercedes Main Dealer Reliance Motors of Chingford to first
owner Mr C Driver of London, a new car sales invoice in the history file
confirms the purchase price of £23,288.96. The invoice further details
the factory options including anti-lock braking (£706.19), alloy wheels
(£403.48), headlamp wash system (£158.07), rear child seat (£210.23) and
Tempomat cruise control (152.63). The original maintenance booklet hosts a
number of main dealer and specialist service stamps documenting the mileage
throughout, and almost every MOT certificate from new leaves in no doubt
the genuine low mileage this special car has enjoyed. The original A5
clear plastic wallet contains all original handbooks, radio guides, point
of sale literature, and even the dealer supplied small leather pouch
housing the spare key! A collection of Mercedes Main Dealer invoices and
specialist receipts complete the history file.
This stunning vehicle will delight the collector and appeal to an
enthusiast wanting an incredibly well preserved example of a truly
legendary driving machine.
