Epoxy resin used to improve shape of inlet port - 'Apple port' as per David Vizzard book specs. Carburettors: 2x Twin 45mm Dellorto DHLAs with (If I remember correctly) 38mm Chokes. Infact, the specs I followed are available in Des Hammill's book 'How To Power Tune Ford SOHC 'PINTO' Engines. He gives several examples of motors including 2-3 set-ups for Pinto engines including 2100cc which is the one I used. It got the results you see above. Cylinder Head work has been elaborate and very time consuming (Valve guides have been ground flush with the roof on both inlet and Exhaust ports). Exhaust ports enlarged throughout. - Both in. & ex. throts have neen 'throated' and then blended in upstream with the rest of the port. Heavy duty bearings all around including camshaft. Standard ford factory camshaft & springs used during this video. Standard points type distributor etc etc.. Mechanical Compression approx 10.8:1 (I used 100octane shell V-power petrol for my runs). Standard flywheel had all the available mass machined off to give the lightest possible unit whilst retaining the most of the strength. It has five steel dowel + 6x ARP bolts fastening it to the crank. Crank was machined at halesowen engines (Don't think they do it anymore as old man retired) then heat treated at laystall crankshafts in Wolverhampton (different trading name now I think) and also polished at laystall crankshafts. Diesel rods have seen some machining to get them to fit the crankshaft (Rods are thicker and longer + a little hevier when standard). Rods fitted with ARP YB cosworth rod bolts (No nuts). I spent the best part of 7 years building this engine. It has been a financial disaster and I would not do it again. Saying that however, the value of building and running the engine successfully will most likely reveal itself as the years go by. 1973 Ford Pinto For Sale North Carolina Updated 11/20/2013. Price: $3700 . 27834
1973 Ford Pinto, 2.0 sohc 4cyl c4 automatic 3.42 gear 37500 original miles. Price: 3700. Cylinder head upgraded to Ported Polished Bowl Blended Hardened Valve seats. New Solid Lifters, New Followers, New Custom Crane Camshaft. Crane Cam number is for-272-2-10, specs are 2500 to 6000 rpm power band, 3000 cruise rpm, valve lift is 436 / 460 and the duration is 272/282. New Exhaust, leaves the header at approx 2.5 inches, and tapers to 2 and 1/8th inch at the rear bumper, still much larger than stock pinto 4cyl Exhaust. 14inch centerline wide rims with large NEW 14 inch tires, 9 inches wide, 26.5 inches tall. C4 Automatic transmission new stock torque convertor and new seals. Car needs a paint job, and considerable punch and fill around edges, mainly near the front and back of the rear wheels and the roof, where the original vinyl top was removed, leaving glue/remnants and some pitting. Roof needs grinding smoothing sealing and repainting (with bumpy paint?, to simulate the vinyl top look?) - nearly impossible to see in video or photos. YES, those areas are sealed up with Black Rustoleum, ANY TIME I see any rust trying to break thru and or spread. Listen to the audio, the solid lifter camshaft gives the engine a nice lope at idle, can hear it better when it's IN GEAR, at idle. Dark Forest green, I might choose. Car comes with a fibreglass trunklid spoiler (not installed) as well as some FREE original extra parts such as gauges/doorhandles/windowcranks and 2 cyl heads, 1 2.0 for rebuild, 1 2.3 already rebuilt, if desired. $3700 my loss, you hit the lottery at this price. Overall cost to me? 11000plus. 450 holley, offenhauser intake, header, custom Exhaust. Cyl head work, parts, labor and fabrication cost me 6000 in parts/labor. Add new radiator, brakes, alternator, starter, AC (400 parts/labor TWICE to get it RIGHT), 14 in wheels/NEW tires, and it's easy to add to over 11000 using simple math. Those costs, you wont have to repeat. Rather you can just do the bodywork and paint. This car has been painted ONCE in 40 years, SIX YEARS AGO, and that was a cheap maaco respray in black, did not include color conversion (doorjams etc still show mostly orig white/green). Considering the age, its held in pretty good, overall condition. The interior is all inact, with no rips or tears in the upholstery or headliner, 1 crack on the dash, that is covered with a green matching felt cover. Orig Shag carpet is not worn. Floors are solid. It's not rusty underneath, like many 40-year old pintos that you will find. Find 1 with only 37500 original miles, and these mechanical upgrades/updates. Cylinder Head work: 1500 in JUST labor at the Coleman Brothers machine shop in Baltimore, Md, for porting, polishing, bowl blending and very slight shaving to ensure flatness (may be minimal increase in c/r from that, I'm guessing .2 for 8.8 to 1, based on less than 20 thousands shaved for flatness) - factory c/r, I JUST READ, was 8.6 to 1 and 100 bhp. If U can do the bodywork/paint yourself, or hire it done for cheap, you'll have a pretty nice driver quality 4banger, not a show car, but a decent street machine, cruise-ins car, for under 6000 bucks, plus or minus some hundreds. Can you find a dirt dobber nest under the hood or underbody? I'm sure you can. This car has been driven approx 200 miles in the past 2 years. Stored under a roof, but open air, sometimes also under a car cover. This car had to be PURCHASED with 30,000 orig miles on it, 6 years ago, driven 7300 miles locally, before the mechanical restoration/upgrades began. Thanks for watching listening and reading.
