Known as BlueDIRECT, this innovation establishes the V-engines from Mercedes-Benz as worldwide benchmarks and makes a further reduction in fuel consumption by 20 percent possible by engine modifications alone. The V-angle of the new V6 engine is only 60 degrees. This enables the balance shaft for primary vibrations to be omitted. As a result, the driver notices a high level of comfort. The crankcase, pistons and cylinder heads of the V6 are made of aluminum while the crankshaft, connecting rods and valves are built from special forged steel. The technology in the new engine generation includes a number of new developments that are unique in combination: Multi-spark ignition and third-generation spray-guided direct fuel injection system with piezo-electric injectors that offer more fuel savings through a homogenous combustion process with a considerably extended characteristic map and fuel-efficient lean-burn technology. Power consumption by auxiliary units has been reduced. These include an optimized water pump with 2nd-generation thermal management, a demand-controlled oil pump, a volume-controlled high-pressure fuel pump and an intelligent generator management system. Lightweight construction techniques and detailed improvements have also reduced in-engine friction considerably compared to the previous engine.

The low fuel consumption figures and exemplary emissions figures are particularly impressive. Compared with the outgoing model, the entire model range consumes 25 percent less fuel on average. This kind of formidable reduction in fuel consumption is unprecedented with any Mercedes-Benz SUV model changeover to date. An ultra-modern engine line-up, concerted engine downsizing, the best-in-class Cd value of 0.32, extensive BlueEFFICIENCY measures and new development tools such as the "energy-transparent vehicle" all play their part in delivering the good energy efficiency figures. The highlight comes in the guise of the ML 250 BlueTEC 4MATIC, which is 28 percent more economical than its predecessor, boasts NEDC fuel consumption of 6.0 l/100 km (158 g CO2/km) and has a range of up to 1500 kilometres on a single tank - figures that only a few years ago remained the preserve of the compact class. BlueTEC diesel units and the new generation of BlueDIRECT direct-injection petrol engines form the basis for the excellent economy and outstanding life cycle assessment of the new M-Class. In this respect, downsizing takes centre stage as far as the diesel models are concerned: In the ML 250 BlueTEC 4MATIC, the 3.0-litre V6 of the previous model is replaced by the thrifty four-cylinder EU6-standard unit already familiar from, for instance, the S-Class. The ML 350 BlueTEC 4MATIC features an extensively revamped 3.0-litre V6, which also betters the EU6 standard and offers far better performance coupled with a substantial reduction in fuel consumption. Thanks to state-of-the-art AdBlue® emission control technology both diesel models comfortably meet the EU6 standard slated for introduction in 2014.

► Mercedes Future Truck 2025 (Autonomous Driving Demo)
The Mercedes-Benz Future Truck 2025 constitutes a revolution in efficiency, safety and networking, a revolution for road traffic and its infrastructure, for professional driving and for the road transport sector. This is not a new truck, but rather the key element in the interconnected transport system of the future. It is being developed as part of the "Shaping Future Transportation" initiative by Daimler Trucks to conserve resources and reduce emissions of all kinds. Other aims are to ensure the highest possible level of traffic safety and to Boost networking with intelligent data management considerably for tailor-made vehicle and service solutions. The prototype demonstrated the exciting capabilities of the Future Truck 2025 back in the summer at speeds of up to 80 km/h in realistic traffic situations on a section of the A14 motorway in Magdeburg, Germany. Now the thrilling exterior and interior of that same vehicle are being revealed. Autonomous driving: One of the most interesting questions on the subject of autonomous driving is the time horizon envisaged for its realisation. In purely technical terms, turning it into reality on the roads is already feasible within around five years. In terms of passenger car development cycles, a possible start is envisaged in 2020. Owing to the more complex factors for heavy commercial vehicles, the time horizon for such vehicles will, however, be rather longer – realistically implementation is possible within ten years, also in view of the legal considerations that still remain to be clarified.
