We see it every Friday during our evening commute. A stream of vehicles choking the freeway, headed out to the Mojave Desert or the Colorado River for some well-earned weekend stress relief.
The fun varies, from camping to dirt-bike riding to water-skiing. But the vehicle that invariably gets tasked with hauling the corresponding equipment is a full-size pickup truck. You know, like the 2009 Chevrolet Silverado 1500, 2009 Dodge Ram 1500, 2009 Ford F-150 or 2009 Toyota Tundra.
Sure, we talk about the virtues of the minivan as a family hauler, and there are many. But the minivan stands no chance against a looming 25-foot camping trailer. And SUVs are easily flummoxed by motocross bikes and the need to carry their smelly gas cans (or anything that's remotely dirty, actually) in the vehicle's cargo area.
There's nothing like a pickup, with its big bin in back that doesn't care what you toss into it. And the truck is sure to be around long after the full-frame SUV falls completely out of favor and descends into the three-row car-based sensibility that is the crossover.

There is that segment of truck buyers though that needs a vehicle with tons of utility and maybe 4X4 capability. The 2012 Nissan Frontier combines the best of all worlds into one great package. There are 4 different trims for the 2012 model year which include a combination of drive train packages and cab configurations. The base price on the 2012 Nissan Frontier is $19,010.
The Nissan Frontier comes with 2 different engine choices. The first is a 2.5 liter 4-cylinder that makes 152 horsepower and 171 lb-ft. of torque. This engine can tow up to 3500 lbs. and gets 19 MPG in the city and 23 MPG on the highway when equipped with a 5-speed manual transmission. The second engine choice is also the mot popular. The larger more powerful 4.0 liter V-6 motor puts out 261 horsepower and 281 lb-ft. of torque. This engine allows the Frontier to tow up to 6500 lbs. Fuel economy is 16 MPG in the city and 20 MPG on the highway with the 6-speed manual transmission.
Compact Pickup Trucks like the Nissan Frontier have been around for a few decades. They were originally designed to take the place of larger trucks for those who are not so serious about their hauling and towing. The benefit of buying a compact truck is that is costs less and gets better gas mileage than a full sized truck.

After our Duel in the Desert challenge in which Mopar's Ram Runner beat the Ford SVT Raptor, we decided to let truck makers offer us their biggest and baddest off-road trucks for our Ultimate 4X4 Shootout. The contestants are the 2012 Ford SVT Raptor, 2012 Nissan Frontier Pro-4X, 2012 Ram Power Wagon ST and 2012 Toyota Tacoma TRD Baja. Each pickup competed in a grueling list of off-road and on-road challenges.
