Fast & Furious 4: Buick Grand National
MORE FAST& FURIOUS 4 @ INSIDELINE.COM:
Heists are, by their nature, illegal. So what could be a better car for a
heist than a sinister black Buick Grand National GNX? And that's just what
Dominic Torreto (Vin Diesel) drives at the beginning of Fast & Furious as
he robs a land train full of high-octane fuel. No one in the picture car
department remembers exactly how the GNX won its role, except that it
seemed such a natural choice that no one gave it a second thought.
Considering the intense stunts performed during the filming of this opening
sequence, it's probably not surprising that a lot of Buick Grand Nationals
(but no actual GNXs) were sacrificed in its creation. In fact, the picture
car department created seven of them, all based on real GNs or T-Types.
Four would wind up scrapped.
The most unusual of the seven GNs built was one with the body mounted
backward on the frame so it could be driven at speed while appearing to be
going backward. To get the engine tucked under the trunk lid, however, the
turbocharger and its plumbing had to be
removed. Most of the other GNs retained their original turbo V6s, though a couple had Chevy crate V8s
It's amazing it took this long for someone to give the Grand National the
starring role it deserved.

In this episode we give my 1987 Buick Grand National some much needed
attention, specifically to the differential and rear suspension. This is
the second part of a multi-part series where we're making a host of
modifications to this American classic to improve its performance on the
street and strip. Thanks for watching and subscribing!

Grand National passes Corvette as it wrecks
John N. testing his tricked out Stage 2 Grand National at Thunder Valley
Raceway park. His opponent in a Corvette stays in it too long and narrowly
misses hitting the GN as it passes by! The GN's build up had recently been
completed and this was intended to be a soft pass with only 20# of Boost. The camera person was there to film
the car's reaction to the launch for tuning purposes. They were so focused
on the GN that they did not notice what was happening to the Corvette until
it was over.

Buick Grand National Car Show, 1990
Video by John Spina, Caspers Electronics Inc. in Loveland, Colorado, and
hosted by Kirban Performance, Warminster PA. Vintage video footage showing
the Buick Grand National frenzy back in the day...something you will never
see again (at least not in these numbers - the closest you'll ever get to
this many cars is the GS Nationals). The turbocharged and intercooled Buick was the fastest
US production car in 1987; and even today, still one of the quickest
vehicles on the road and at the quarter-mile tracks. This production
vehicle has become a cult-classic and still shows up in numbers at the
annual GSCA event in Bowling Green, KY.
BUICK - The "Grand National" & "GNX" Story Part 1 of 3
I don't like too many 80s cars, but this is my favorite BY FAR. It's the
only car I allow to be included with the "brute force" muscle cars of the
60s and early 70s. I enjoyed working on them and driving them when I
started as a tech at a Buick dealer in 1991, in Arlington TX. Too bad
Pontiac and Olds didn't also make their own version of this the same way
Buick made theirs.---Buick made a V6 from wacking 2 cylinders off their
great V8, while letting the turbo and
PERFECT computerized spark/fuel control "get back" the lost power of the 2
cylinders, AND retaining V6 fuel economy!--(these cars could get in the
high 20s low 30s on the hwy). Since this is EXACTLY a Buick V8 with 2
cylinders wacked off, and since it is a 90 degree V (like a V8) unlike many
V6s, the result is a nice even power curve that does not lack low-end. It
does not have near the low-end "turbo
lag" as many turbo POS's today that have
to redline at 8500rpm before they make any power. In fact, in stock form
these engines never need to see over 5000rpm.
