The first half hour of our only successful driving session on the first day in our 1995 Toyota Celica GT. Will the champ be defeated? The 2014 Chevrolet Cruze Diesel is finally here. Now America is discovering what Europeans have known for a long time; diesel powered cars get wonderful fuel economy. The Volkswagen Jetta TDI has been the reigning champ for over a decade when it comes to fuel efficient diesel powered cars. Now though, the Cruze Diesel is on the scene with more MPG on the highway, more torque, and a lower price tag. The 2014 Chevy Cruze Diesel has a base price of $24,885. Only time will tell if the Cruze can displace the Jetta TDI, let's see how this newcomer stacks up. So is the 2014 Chevy Cruze turbo Diesel worth the wait? You better believe it! GM has finally brought to market a worthy competitor to the Volkswagen Jetta TDI. Let's first compare the Cruze Diesel to its Cruze Eco bother which also gets excellent fuel economy figures. The Cruze tops the Eco model in a couple of different ways. The thrifty Cruze Eco is powered by a 1.4 liter turbocharged engine running regular gas. Power output is 136 horsepower and 148 lb-ft of torque. But the Cruze Diesel also has turbo power but gets a larger 2.0 liter engine. Thus power is higher at 151 horsepower and get this; 264 lb-ft of torque. The Diesel also trumps in the fuel economy department with a rating of 27 MPG in the city and 46 MPG on the highway. Does it sound different? Of course it's a diesel. Some people like the sound, others hate it, and still others are not bothered at all. The more conservative you drive the Cruze Diesel the better fuel economy figures you can expect. That's the beauty of diesel engines; you get more miles to the gallon and tons of torque which gets you moving. Off the line the car is a little sluggish; the turbo has to spool up. Once you are on a roll though, the torque kicks in pretty early and plenty of power is on tap. The car could benefit from a Manual Gearbox or a Dual-Clutch Automatic Transmission. Price wise the 2014 Cruze Diesel does cost about $5k more than the Eco model: $24885 vs. $19,835. But that increased price not only includes the price of diesel technology, but some great features and options. The leather interior gives the Cruze a more upscale feel and the front seats are heated. The Chevy MyLink infotainment Center is standard with all the Bluetooth and digital audio goodies including Pandora and Stitcher integration. The rest of the interior is very good too with a fair amount of room and conveniences like well placed cup holders and power outlets. Out back the spare tire has been replaced with a diesel fluid emissions tank. Don't worry though because a tire refill pump is included. The trunk does have 13.3 cubic feet of space and the rear seat features a 60/40 fold split seat. The 2014 Chevrolet Cruze Diesel does benefit from active grill shutters up front and an aero kit and wing out back. But it's the under car belly pans that help air flow and reduce the cars drag coefficient. The Cruze Diesel is made for highway cruising with a nice sized gas tank at 15.6 gallons that allows for an enormous driving range of over 700 miles.
