Zero to 60 Run--4.6 Cadillac Northstar V8 vs. 4.9 OHV V8
Zero to 60 comparison between my new 2001 Cadillac Seville SLS with a 4.6
Northstar V8 and the 1991 Cadillac Sedan de Ville with a 4.9 that I've
owned since 2005. The Northstar in the Seville is faster, especially at the top end, but the
good old 4.9 in the DeVille holds its own--especially for an 18-year-old
car with 257,000 miles on it.
Judging from the time codes in the video, the Seville did it in 7 second
flat; the DeVille is just over 9 seconds.
Interestingly, both cars shift from 1st to 2nd at 45 MPH, and both hold 2nd
gear all the way up to ~80 MPH. Without a tach in the DeVille, I have no
idea how high it was revving, but it probably went close to redline.
The noise you hear besides the engine revving in the Seville is raindrops
on the windshield. I had the camera on a tripod held down between my legs
in the Seville; in the DeVille, it's just handheld, so it's shakier.
Both runs done on Stapleton Rd. just south of Monmouth/Independence, Oregon

Hi, CORVAIRWILD here. A little about me and what I do: First, I love my
wife of many years, she is a wonderful lady. I call her Mrs CW. I can never
go anywhere without her & my Dog Muggs! He's cool. You should have a dog
like him too. Next, I am a landlord, NO, not a slumlord who does section 8
apartment rentals, but I keep my properties up like they were my own...they
are my own! Like I live there. I have lots of apartment buildings, a farm
out in the country and a house here and there. I am always doing something,
driving rehabbing, you name it! I want to include you, so I bring my
camera! EVERYWHERE! Haha.
Did I mention I am a car enthusiast! I can't get enough Covairs and Vintage
Chevy and GMC trucks. They have great reliability...all of em' the best
vehicle on the road ever is a Corvair Spider turbo. Back to the trucks, I love the diesel
trucks and suburbans, Blazers too. That's what I plow snow with. A fisher
snow plow. I'm a busy guy, but I make time for you. Thanks! CW
Whosaidtyler's second-worst engine of all time
The Cadillac Northstar.
This engine started out good but suffered several expensive and difficult
to repair problems during it's lifetime including coolant leaks, oil leaks
and oil consumption, all well-documented.
Cadillac head gasket repaired
You check for leaks and everything looks good. Your mechanic checks the
cooling system and also finds nothing wrong. In fact, most Cadillacs can
idle all day and not loose a drop of coolant or overheat. However, as soon
as you get on the freeway the temperature starts to go up and the low
coolant light appears again. When you check the coolant level it's very
low. Frequently requiring a gallon or more to refill. Without any clear
indication as to what's causing the problem your mechanic may suggest
replacing various cooling system components. Again, this may resolve the
problem for a while, but soon the low coolant light re-appears. What to do?
