In 1937, Oldsmobile was a pioneer in introducing a four-speed semi-automatic transmission called the "Automatic Safety Transmission", although this accessory was actually built by Buick, which would offer it in its own cars in 1938. This transmission featured a conventional clutch pedal, which the driver pressed before selecting either "low" or "high" range. In "low," the car shifted between first and second gears. This is my 1973 oldsmobile omega project that i have been working on for a little over a year now. I got a lot done but still have a ways to go on it.





1973 OLDSMOBILE OMEGA -- CLONED FROM THE CHEVY NOVA
In 1973 GM had the bright idea of utilizing the Chevy Nova chassis and body for the new compact Buick Apollo and the Oldsmobile Omega. Both clones look like a Chevy Nova except different front and rear end treatments. Of course both of these clones like the Chevy Nova were at the bottom rung of all three divisions. All three compacts came in a hatchback coupe, coupe and 4 door sedan. This coupe is one of 26,126 made and had a price tag of $2,613. Engines for the Omega were a L-head 6 with 250 cid and 100 bhp., and a V8, 350 cid with 180 horses. GM market share kept climbing, reaching just over 52% of the domestic industry. The Omega replaced the final year of the Olds F-85 which only came in a four door model and only 3,792 were made for it's last year. While the Buick Apollo sales faltered, the Olds Omega continued on through the 1984 model year and then replaced by the Olds Firenza. All three compacts could be dressed up with a vinyl roof and some power accessories. This example is hardly seen anymore and is in excellent condition. My guess is that is was an one owner car most of it's life and always maintained and garaged. I hope you enjoy this first year clone, the 1973 Oldsmobile Omega and thanks very much for viewing.

Stock #5878 For sale in our St. Louis showroom is a frame off restored 1974 Oldsmobile Omega. The Omega shared the X-body Nova platform, but was more dressed up than the basic Chevy. The Omega featured a unique nose and tail, as well as a fancier wood grain dash. This particular car features a 350 CID V8 which has been bored .030 over and has a roller cam and lifters. Backing this power plant is a rebuilt 350 turbo automatic transmission running to a 10 bolt rear end with 3.23 gear ratio. For more information on this vehicle visit http://tinyurl.com/blcwa26 Don't be fooled by the large-by-huge chrome wheels it's wearing today, this particular '57 Golden Rocket 88 is an authentic J2 car, and is extensively and thoroughly restored to original condition from top to bottom. Our documents suggest that this is one of only four Golden Rocket 88 2-door sedans in existence with the J2 engine. The two-tone bodywork on this car is spectacularly done and looks especially striking in black and white with a red stripe in the chrome trim that separates the two halves. Bodywork is beautiful, with straight panels and excellent fit throughout, evidenced by the miles-deep reflections in the paint. The real story on this Olds is the J2 371 cubic inch engine under the hood. Fully rebuilt during the restoration, it runs like new and the passing of years has proven that these are some extremely durable engines. Detailing is first-rate too, from the 'Oldsmobile J2 Rocket" decals on the valve covers, to the correct 2-barrel carburetors, to the original power steering system that's fully functional. You'll note that this engine sports a trio of shorty air cleaners on the carbs, but the original dual oil-bath air cleaner is also included. The engine is backed by a 3-speed Hydramatic transmission, and drives the original rear end. Brakes were rebuilt to stock specifications, as was the suspension, although the car was given a subtle, aggressive look by tweaking the spring height slightly. The car wears a set of chrome Billet Specialties wheels, but the original 15-inch steel wheels and plain hubcaps are included. From the tri-tone seats with patented GM comfort weave cushions, to the positively breathtaking instrument cluster, this interior is new. The original radio has been upgraded to include an iPod interface. The trunk is sporting a custom carpet, but an original trunk mat is included. This Olds is fast, comfortable, luxurious, and about 2/3 the cost of a comparable Chevy. Information about Oldsmobile V8 engines
In this video I talk about the "late" Oldsmobile V8 and offer tips on how to identify them by number. "Late" in this instance means 1964-1990. Early('49-64) Olds engines are an entirely different block, etc. Sometimes my info gets a bit twisted when it stays inside my head for a while, so a correction is that '77-80 heads are 3A, not 4A. 4A heads are 403 pieces. Also, to clarify and avoid confusion, this...7 A is a 350 head, this...7A is a later 307 head. You can also tell the difference easily by the ports. Late 307 and 260 ports are half the size of any other versions. Trivia: The Olds 403 was used in 1977-79 Pontiac Trans-Am's, but not all of them. Of note...the engine in the video is painted the incorrect shade of gold, which appears to be the Krylon generic gold. The proper shade is slightly darker and less "glitzy"
