WRC Rally Monte Carlo 1986 Group B (deel 1) The 1980s saw the rear-wheel-drive Group 2 and the more popular Group 4 cars be replaced by more powerful four-wheel-drive Group B cars. FISA legalized all-wheel-drive in 1979, but most manufacturers believed it was too complex to be successful. However, after Audi started entering Mikkola and the new four-wheel-drive Quattro in rallies for testing purposes with immediate success, other manufacturers started their all-wheel-drive projects. Group B regulations were introduced in the 1982 season, and with only a few restrictions allowed almost unlimited power. Audi took the constructors' title in 1982 and 1984 and drivers' title in 1983 (Mikkola) and 1984 (Stig Blomqvist). Audi's French female driver Michèle Mouton came close to winning the title in 1982, but had to settle for second place after Opel rival Röhrl. 1985 title seemed set to go to Vatanen and his Peugeot 205 T16 but a bad accident at the Rally Argentina left him to watch compatriot and team-mate Timo Salonen take the title instead. Italian Attilio Bettega had even a more severe crash with his Lancia 037 at the Tour de Corse and died instantly.

PEUGEOT 205 TURBO 16 ---- "LA STORIA" 3/14
Fin dal suo esordio, al Montecarlo 1984, appare evidente che la T16 sarebbe diventata la nuova regina del mondiale. Al debutto, infatti, la piccola vettura francese così compatta e potente fa registrare delle prestazioni di assoluto valore. Nel corso della stagione vince al 1000 Laghi, Sanremo e RAC grazie ad un sorprendente Ari Vatanen conquistando la terza posizione in generale. Nel 1985 la squadra diretta da Jean Todt si impone alla grande vincendo entrambi i titoli. Si parte dal Montecarlo e Vatanen vince con distacchi pesanti per tutti. Quest'ultimo si ripete anche in Svezia. D'ora in avanti si vede solo vincere una Peugeot: quella di Timo Salonen. Il finlandese si afferma in Portogallo, Grecia, Nuova Zelanda, Argentina e Finlandia. Un dominio impressionante che porta a Salonen il titolo piloti (con il doppio dei punti del secondo classificato, Blomqvist con l'Audi) e alla casa francese quello marche con tre gare di anticipo...pazzesco! Nel 1986 in casa Peugeot c'è da lavorare decisamente di più visto l'arrivo della mostruosa Lancia Delta S4. La prima vittoria arriva in Svezia per merito di Juka Kankkunen. Il rally di Corsica si tinge di nero; Toivonen e Cresto perdono la vita a bordo della Delta S4; la Lancia si ritira in segno di lutto; la Peugeot quindi ha gioco facile e vince con Bruno Saby portandosi in testa al mondiale. In Grecia vince KKK dopo che i piloti Lancia vengono bloccati a più riprese da problemi vari e sono costretti a rallentare. In Nuova Zelanda rivince KKK ringraziando ancora la Lancia che si perde per strada. Al 1000 Laghi Salonen precede KKK in una gara dominata sin dall'inizio dalla Lancia di Alen che si cappotta e termina la sua corsa in una scarpata...arriverà terzo. Al Sanremo le Peugeot vengono squalificate per irregolarità...domina la Lancia. Al Rac vince Salonen e la Peugeot si aggiudica il titolo marche. Con una decisione scandalosa la Fisa annulla il rally italiano dominato dalla S4 di Alen dopo i reclami della Peugeot. Il titolo piloti passa, sulla carta ma non sulla strada, a Juka Kankkunen. Tutto sommato si può concludere che la stagione 1986 non è proprio stata vinta dalla Peugeot ma bensì persa dalla Lancia, maledettamente sfortunata in Corsica e comunque con il rammarico di aver perso troppi punti per strada.
