VW Passat Bad Turbo???

This is my VW Passat 1999 1.8T with 215,561 miles...still runs strong but slow. I think it's a bad turbo because if it's sluggishness and weird noise that sounds like the bearing is bad. The sluggishness could be because it's a 1999 but i would rather have your opinion on what the sound is before i take it apart.

Renault Laguna blown turbo
This was my Laguna 02, Whilst driving pretty fast on a motorway it suddenly lost over a half of its power. I pulled over to see what was it but found nothing. I wanted to continue to drive as I had a date but when I started the engine the rev counter hand went all the way up and the engine obviously was making a lot of noise. I wanted to stop the engine pressing the button but it wouldn't work then I saw a lot of smoke that made me scared :) I ripped out the access card to stop the engine but surprisingly it wouldn't work either and after a minute or so of trying I hit the idea to stall it on 1st gear with with the brakes on - thankfully it worked out. I found myself up in the smoke in the middle of motor way and a couple of minutes later the fire brigade was with me but there was nothing to put out. Called AA to get it of the motorway and that was the very last straw, never ever Renault again, sold it for parts! didn't get on the date and don't think the bird believed my story :)

More TDI problem noises
First part is start and idle. Second is the squeal in first and second gears.

AUDI A4 and VW PASSAT New Car Turbo
http://www.buyautoparts.com/part/replacement-turbocharger/index.html?source=ytko3turbo04 Audi A4 turbo and VW turbo featured that will significantly help with horsepower. Car part is both new Volkswagen turbocharger and new Audi turbo. New Aftermarket and OEM turbos are much better than remanufactured turbochargers. Be sure to bring your new turbo to a certified auto parts mechanic for proper installation, repair, and maximum Boost.

Passat engine problem
Starts up fine and then has a horrible idle and then shuts off. Just replaced all spark plugs and coilpacks.

**PROBLEM SOLVED** Code 17705 2003 Passat 1.8T Updates - Car Idles Fine When I Squeeze This Hose
August 16, 2010 Yup, I was right. Replaced the bleeder valve and the car is all good now. It idles much smoother too after all the hoses and throttle body cleaning, new d.v., and a new check valve. :) --------------------------------------------------------------------- Ahh looks like it's the bleeding valve (06B 103 245) the culprit. Mine looks empty in the inside and there is another check valve (06A 133 528 D/A) connected to it so I thought it was fine but when I was about to return the new bleeding valve, I noticed there is actually moving thing in the inside and the old one is completely empty (I wonder where the moving thing went) I'm going to change it now, will update again later. --------------------------------------------------------------------- August 14, 2010 Updates Replaced Check Valve (06A 133 528 D/A) today, car is still idling rough, flashing CEL but it's solid/no CEL when the car is moving. What I have done so far: 1. Replaced turbo Inlet Pipe 2. Replaced D.V. 4. Did Smoke Test, No Vacuum Leak 3. Replace Check Valve (06A 133 528 D/A) 4. Cleaned Throttle Body and All Pipes under Intake Manifold Codes keep reappearing: 17705 - Pressure Drop between turbo and Throttle Valve (check D.V.!) P1297 - 001 - Upper Limit Exceeded And All Cylinders Misfire Car idles fine when I squeeze this hose marked in green: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KAmAR2P5dZ4 --------------------------------------------------------------------- August 11, 2010 Updates I was moving the hoses leading to a check valve (06A 133 528 A) to get more room for my screwdriver and that thing broke at one end. Dealer told me there is a new revised valve, same part number but with letter D instead of A. Here's the new part number 06A 133 528 D Looks like I won't be needing the bleeder valve anymore (06B 103 245). It looks empty in the inside, no springy or moving parts so I cleaned it up with some WD40. I also cleaned up all the hoses. I put it in order anyway just in case. I haven't checked the housing. Hopefully I'll get the replacement parts tomorrow and manifold will come off again. Can't get access to the bleeder housing without removing it. --------------------------------------------------------------------- August 10, 2010 Updates did the smoke test, no leak. noticed the car was idling fine when I squeezed this hose in green (look at picture below) http://img21.imageshack.us/img21/9290/20100804008.jpg --------------------------------------------------------------------- August, 2010 Updates New Diverter Valve didn't help. I removed the intake manifold to inspect any leak under there and didn't find any. Well now, everything is put back together. cleaned throttle body and intake manifold, new gasket. All check valves are fine. Car still stuttering at idle but not as bad but this time I can feel the car gives more power, maybe the cleaning kinda helped. I think it's still slowly leaking oil from somewhere. With the oil cap off, it sounds like sucking in air, same when oil dipstick off. I guess there is still vacuum leak somewhere. Codes keep reappearing: 17705 - Pressure Drop between turbo and Throttle Valve (check D.V.!) P1297 - 001 - Upper Limit Exceeded and All Cylinders Misfire ---------------------------------------------------------------------- After I replaced the cracked turbo inlet host, I'm still getting this code with all cylinders misfired. 17705 - Pressure Drop between turbo and Throttle Valve (check D.V.!) ***********P1297 - 001 - Upper Limit Exceeded Replacing the cracked turbo inlet hose didn't help. --------------------------------------------------------------------- Plugs were replaced recently. Coils replaced with the improved version few months ago. Codes before replacing the cracked turbo inlet: 16840 - EVAP System: Very Small Leak Detected ***********P0456 - 001 - Upper Limit Exceeded - Intermittent 17536 - Fuel Trim: Bank 1 (Mult): System too Lean ***********P1128 - 001 - Upper Limit Exceeded 16555 - Fuel Trim: System Too Lean: Bank 1 ***********P0171 - 001 - Upper Limit Exceeded 17519 - Oxygen (Lambda) Sensor Regulation: Bank 1: System too Lean ***********P1111 - 002 - Lower Limit Exceeded 16891 - Idle Control System RPM Higher than Expected. ***********P0507 - 001 - Upper Limit Exceeded - Intermittent 17705 - Pressure Drop between turbo and Throttle Valve (check D.V.!) ***********P1297 - 001 - Upper Limit Exceeded 17544 - Fuel Trim: Bank 1 (Add): System too Lean ***********P1136 - 001 - Upper Limit Exceeded and All Cylinders Misfire --------------------------------------------------------------------- Link to my passatworld thread http://www.passatworld.com/forums/showthread.php?p=2602836

Blowing up a K03 turbo on my B5 Audi S4 (smoke, epic fail, turbolady, oh no!) Part I (2003)
Blown turbo K03 Action! Death of a turbo. An old video I found of the last moments of life for my stock K03 turbos on my 2001 Audi B5 S4. I was running way too much Boost so they experienced an early death at about 51,000 miles. It was a great reason to upgrade to Stage III. :-) turbo explosion! Blown turbo! Carnage! Better than a blown engine I guess.
