Is It Numbers Matching? - Cougar by the Numbers
In this video we delve into the complex topic of decoding tags, date codes, and other numbers to check if your classic Ford / Mercury is "numbers matching," using Don's newly acquired '69 Mercury Cougar XR7 428 Cobra Jet convertible as an example. While we haven't covered the subject 100% in this video (to keep it concise) we think this covers most of the major components and gives you the knowledge you need to figure out what your numbers mean. As mentioned in the video, we highly recommend Marti Auto Works, especially his Tagbook, which made this video possible. 1970 Mercury Cougar convertible for sale
You are looking at a lovely example of a classic Mercury Cougar convertible, finished in dark red the original colour, with red interior, a very solid rust free California car since new, still wears the original blue and yellow california license plates. I purchased this car last year from the estate of the original owner, who sadly passed away.
The car has 351 V8 2bbl with automatic, and has had an Vintage Air air conditioning system professionally installed at a cost of nearly $3500, its a really nice installation, and will freeze your ta tas off!
I have put new brake pads, calipers, master cylinder and Booster. New KYB shocks front and rear, and a brand new custom made dual Exhaust system that is nice and subtle that will not upset your neighbours on a Sunday morning!! The ignition switch was replaced, and all the belts and hoses have been recently replaced, along with Platinum spark plugs, new plug wires.
I also added a Petronix ignition system and Flamethrower coil to make the car a reliable everyday driver. The electric windows have been rebuilt and the car has a power top with new cylinders and hoses, the top is in excellent condition with a glass rear window, the parade boot is also present. I have over $15k in receipts !!
The interior is exceptionally nice, carpet is like new, the seats are excellent, and the dash pad is perfect, not warped or cracked, an Alpine AM FM Cd player has been installed with upgraded speakers behind stock looking door speaker grilles
This convertible body style was only made for 1969 and 1970, so they are pretty rare, only 2322 convertibles were made in 1970 !! So there cannot be too many left. The Mercury shares many of the mechanical items such as suspension, brakes, etc with the ubiquitous Mustang,
The car runs and drives very well, and needs nothing but a driver, the transmission shifts well, car brakes perfectly, and the top, windows, wipers, and lights all work.
The car is sold completely as is, no warranty expressed or implied, this is a 42 year old car, its not perfect, but its very nice. Please ask questions, I strongly encourage inspections, the car is titled in my name, no liens, with a clear California title, and the car is currently registered and insured. The car is located in Los Angeles, I can arrange shipping overseas or nationwide at your cost.
Please have your finances in order before you look at the car. If you have to ask your wife, bank manager, cat or dog, please move on !! And don't bid, if you have a less than perfect feedback rating or lower than 5 please contact me before bidding. Thanks for looking. :) I have tried to be honest and accurate in my descriptions, but descriptions are open to interpretation, so please ask specific questions. Car is for sale locally so I reserve to end the auction early, so if you want to buy the car give me a call and lets do a deal.
