2012 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 Track Test Drive & Muscle Car Video Review

http://www.autobytel.com/chevrolet/Camaro/2012/zl1-coupe/ ?id=32972 Autobytel Road Test Editor T.J. Keon recently had the chance to test drive the all new 2012 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 on the street as well as on the track at Virginia International Raceway. The Camaro ZL1 sports a supercharged V-8 engine that makes 580 horsepower. Base price for the ZL1 is $54,095. On the road the Camaro ZL1 feels firm and planted, but the ride is not rough or harsh. In fact the 2012 Chevy Camaro ZL1 could make for a great daily driver. The Alcantara lined seats and steering wheel feel great and are usually reserved for high end luxury cars. But make no mistake; the ZL1 was designed to kick-butt! One of the things that make the ZL1 special is the optional 20-inch lightweight track wheel. These black 10-spoke rims are made from forged aluminum for strength. The rims are wrapped in Goodyear Eagle F1 Generation 2 tires sized P285/35ZR20 up front and P305/35ZR20 out back. A huge Brembo Brake package sits behind these sinister rims. Suspension chores are handled by the Magnetic Ride Control System. The shocks are filled with a magnetorheological fluid and the dampening levels are computer controlled and adjusted up to 1000 per second. This makes for a comfortable ride on the road and a more than capable ride on the track. The 2012 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 is powered by a Supercharged Corvette engine dubbed the LSA. The 6.2 liter V-8 engine packs an Eaton Supercharger on top. Power output is 580 horsepower and 556 lb-ft. of torque. The Supercharger provides plenty of torque at any RPM level so that the power is there whenever you want it! You can choose between a Hydra-Matic 6-Speed Automatic Transmission w/TAPSHIFT or Tremec 6-speed manual transmission. The Camaro ZL1 can run from 0-60 MPH in 4.0 seconds and can eclipse the ¼ mile in 12.0 seconds. Top speed for the ZL1 is 180 MPH. Fuel economy is 14 MPG in the city and 19 MPG on the highway if you are wondering. On the road the 2012 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 pulls hard from any RPM thanks to the flat torque curve provided by the Supercharger. Practically every part on the Camaro ZL1 was designed to aid this Muscle Car in going fast. At just $54,095 the ZL1 can't be beat when you are talking high performance for the money. The 2012 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 sports the amount of technology and horsepower you would expect to find on a car costing 4 times at much. 2012 Chevy Camaro ZL1 Car Review with Chief Engineer Al Oppenheiser
http://www.autobytel.com/chevrolet/Camaro/2012/zl1-coupe/ Chevrolet Camaro's Chief Engineer Al Oppenheiser gives Autobytel a nice thorough review on the 2012 Chevy Camaro ZL1. This beat has 580 horsepower lurking under the hood. 0-60 MPH flies by in 3.9 seconds with the automatic transmission. This is going to be the ultimate Camaro. Chevy has never produced a Camaro with level of performance and technology built in. It is not very often that you see high performance sports cars equipped with an automatic transmission. But in terms of shifting an automatic will always be quicker than a manual. The Hydra-Matic 6L90 automatic transmission does feature steering wheel mounted paddle shifters. The Magnetic Ride Control System on the Chevy Camaro ZL1 is the first can on the market with the latest and greatest generation of this technology. The shocks have metallic particles in the shock fluid itself. When the shocks sense movement they move the magnetic particles into a field that instantly dampens the suspension. If you are driving 60 MPH in the 2012 Chevy Camaro ZL1 the Magnetic Ride Control System is making adjustments every inch. What this means is that you can have a very comfortable and stable ride on regular roads and a stiffer ride at the track. What's different on the ZL1 body compared to the regular SS is the larger lower grille. This was designed in the wind tunnel to take air in and cool the engine. The air is then channeled out the hood extractor to prevent lift and make down force. The Camaro ZL1 is an easy car to drive. You would think that a 580 horsepower vehicle would be a handful. The manual clutch is very smooth and the automatic transmission is a real joy. The ZL1 is a great car to drive around town in. The Chevy Camaro ZL1 has a base price of $54,095. Nothing on the Camaro ZL1 was compromised in terms of performance. Gas Mileage is not that great but you buy this vehicle for its performance and not its fuel economy. 2012 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 Walk Around with GM's Performance Design Director
http://www.autobytel.com/chevrolet/Camaro/2012/zl1-coupe/ Tom Peters who is the Director for Performance Vehicles at GM was gracious enough to give Autobytel a thorough performance walk around describing the design and performance details on the new 2012 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 coupe. First of all you will note the larger opening in the bumper for increased cooling capacity. The front splitter is the same height as the one found on the Corvette ZR-1. All the details on the front of the Camaro ZL1 were developed and tested in the wind tunnel. The air in the front is not only diverted to cool the radiator but also the front brakes. The hood vent is functional and directs air out the top which aids in preventing lift and creating down force which is important for high speed stability. The hood vents adds a unique character to the front of the car. It also communicates a very serious performance oriented message in a beautifully integrated way. Along the side of the 2012 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 you will notice the rocker panels which are called rocker splitters. These side panels help contribute by adding down force and reducing lift. On thing you should notice is that the fenders bulge in order to fit larger width tires. The front tires measure 285 in width with the rear tires measuring 305 in the rear. This provides a huge contact patch for the 580 horsepower the engine creates. Behind the light weight rims are huge Brembo brakes. At the rear of the 2012 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 you will notice the rear spoiler. This wing has been modified and optimized to even out the amount of rear down force on the front of the vehicle. The rear diffuser also adds a bit of down force and helps move any trapped air out from under the ZL1. Another neat detail on the Camaro ZL1 are the twin dual Exhaust pipes. Learned through the development of the Corvette ZR-1; the Exhaust has a value to optimize backpressure during normal operation. But during wide-open throttle they open up to increase performance and give the car a menacing growl which adds to the overall character of the vehicle. On the inside of the car there are many performance details too! The steering wheel is based on a racing configuration and features a flat bottom. The wheel is wrapped in ultra-luxurious Alcantara Leather. The seats also feature Alcantara inserts as well as the shift knob. There was an incredible amount of attention and time paid to the ergonomics of the shift knob and steering wheel. The heads-up display and G-Force meter give the driver the performance information he needs. The 200 MPH speedometer reminds the driver that the 2012 Chevy Camaro ZL1 is one very serious performance sports car. The ZL1 is an outstanding car that exudes confidence both on and off the track. The performance capabilities of this car have been well integrated and the Camaro's beauty really shines through. All these performance upgrades all to the overall character of the Camaro ZL1. This vehicle is a great car to drive and experience. 2012 Porsche 911 Carrera S Test Drive & Sports Car Video Review
http://www.autobytel.com/porsche/911/2012/?id=32972 The Porsche 911 recently got a thorough refresh for the 2012 model year. This is the 7th generation of 911 to hit the American car market. Since the 1960's Porsche has been known to produce some of the fastest sports cars the world over. But in recent years the Porsche brand as combined high end luxury with their 911 sports car. There are literally 18 different models of the Porsche 911 for the 2012 model year with the base price Carrera costing $79,000 and the top of the line turbo S with the PDK transmission costing $172,100. But the model reviewed here costs about $105,000. The 2012 Porsche 911 Carrera S is powered by a 3.8 liter 6-cylinder engine that produces 400 horsepower and 325 lb-ft. of torque. There are 2 different transmission choices available; the first is a 7-speed manual gearbox that features a long ration 7th gear to help aid in fuel economy, and the second transmission is a 7-speed PDK is a double-clutch gearbox that can change gears within milliseconds. Fuel economy is 22 MPG in the city and 26 MPG on the highway. The 2012 Porsche 911 Carrera has some great fuel saving technologies. First with the PDK transmission, the 911 has what is called coating mode which essentially drops the RPMs to less than 1k so that the car uses less fuel. There is a start-stop system which shuts the engine off while stopped. This technology is commonly found on hybrid vehicles. For this new refresh Porsche made many styling changes. But you can rest easy know the same basic body style that has remained over the past couple of decades is still quite evident. This 7th generation Porsche 911 Carrera is a bit wider with the wheel base getting stretched by 4 inches. With those new dimensions, the 2012 Porsche 911 now has a much better ride. At the rear of the car are newly designed taillights featuring LED lights. As mentioned earlier, the new direction Porsche is taking is to integrate the best luxury amenities and materials as possible into their sports cars. The 911 is no exception as it benefits from great 18-way adjustable seats, an Alcantara headliner, as well as premium materials covering most surfaces in the cabin. Safety wise the Porsche 911 has a handful of front and side impact airbags that feature a two-stage impact system. The bags partially inflate in minor accidents and fully inflate for serious accidents thereby minimizing discomfort for the passengers in slower fender benders. The 2012 Porsche 911 Carrera S is a luxurious sports car that can accelerate from 0-60 MPH in the low 4-seconds range. The 911 has all the creature comforts and technological gadgets you could ever want. And to top it all off this is one great looking sports car. Lingenfelter Camaro ZL1 Tops 200 MPH! - Hot Rod Unlimited Episode 7
On this episode of HOT ROD Unlimited, HOT ROD Editor In Chief David Freiburger drives the Lingenfelter Performance Engineering Camaro ZL1 to 202 mph, making it the first 2012 ZL1 to exceed 200 mph. This very same ZL1 in the exact same configuration (save for wheels and tires and the rollcage) was also the first to run 10s in the quarter mile. The ZL1 Camaros were first delivered to the public in early April, making 580 hp from their supercharged, 6.2L, LSA engines. Within days of delivery, Lingenfelter had its ZL1 making 720 hp at 6,500 rpm and 650 lb-ft at 4,650 rpm, both measured at the rear tires. The performance parts are all from Lingenfelter: CNC-ported cylinder heads, a GT9 camshaft, a ported Supercharger cover, overdrive blower pulleys, a cold-air kit, 63-lb/hr fuel injectors, a voltage Booster for the fuel pump, a 160-degree thermostat, and tuning. The entire package, installed, is $11,495. Everything else on this manual-trans car is stock. The performance testing was done with 109-octane VP fuel and 15 psi Boost. On April 18, 2012, the Lingenfelter ZL1 ran 10.79 at 134.36 mph at Muncie Dragway in Indiana. That was on drag wheels and tires. On April 30, 2012, the car was delivered to the Continental Tire Proving Grounds in Uvalde, Texas. Shod with Continental Extreme Contact tires on the original ZL1 wheels, the Camaro was tested on the 8-1/2-mile oval. The three-lane surface is like a road rather than a race track, the turns are not banked, and there are a few elevation changes. During the top-speed run, Freiburger pulled 0.4 to 0.5 g at 190-plus mph in the sweeping turns, then held it down for nearly 40 seconds on the pull from 190 to 202.67 mph before lifting to avoid cresting a small hill at corner entry at 200-plus mph. The car had not reached terminal velocity. Conditions included a head/crosswind, ambient temperatures in the 90s, and a density altitude of 3,280 feet. The Camaro was aerodynamically stock except for some tape over the front brake-duct openings in an attempt to channel more air through the stock air-to-water Intercooler, as the water was reaching temps in the 250s during prolonged periods of WOT, leading to hot inlet air and reduced power. Naturally, the comments here will lead to the upcoming ¹13 Ford Mustang GT500, with claims of 200 mph capability in bone stock trim. A stock Camaro ZL1 will run 185 mph. Will the GT500 be faster than the Lingenfelter ZL1? Until someone shows up at the same track on the same day with both cars and a single driver, no one will know. Meanwhile, we present the first ZL1 to eclipse the double century mark. See more at Lingenfelter.com and HotRod.com.
