Costing almost £60,000, the replacement for the legendary old BMW M3, the M4 has moved away from the V8 power plant in the old car, and is now powered by a 425bhp twin-turbocharged straight-six engine. Meanwhile, the similarly prices Audi RS5 is propelled by a 4.0-litre V8, which produces 430bhp. It's also mated to the Audi quattro four-wheel drive system. Like the BMW, it also features a dual-clutch gearbox, the Audi S tronic system. There's no denying the Audi lacks the fun factor of the BMW - the quattro four-wheel-drive system prevents the lurid powerslides than you can really go for in the M4. You can also feel the weight of the engine over the front axle in the RS5, but it certainly doesn't feel slow at all. Overall then, the RS5 feels very punchy, and the gearshift is also really nice - the same can be said for its V8 soundtrack. It's not a track machine though, and the car from Neckarsulm is more of a very stable and very rapid cruiser. Meanwhile, the BMW M4 feels very raw and very serious, especially when all the settings are put at their sportiest via the M1 switch on the steering wheel. These also turn the traction control and stability control off. With no electronic aids, the M4 is always trying to get its tail out. However, the body control is amazing, but there is a feeling that it's all a bit artificial. The same can be said for the engine note, which has been enhanced. The M4 is a proper M car though, and something BMW can be truly proud of. It set a lap time of 1m09.9s, compared to the 1m12.2s set by the Audi - that's 2.3s quicker.

Turbine Engine: full power ... LOUD!
This is more film of the GE LM1500 gas turbine engine running at the S&S Turbines open-air test cell. All the noise in the beginning is made by the start cart, which is a 90Hp turbine engine. In the middle of the video, when the noise in an unbearable shriek, the engine is turning just over 7000 rpm, and is blowing hot air out the jetpipe to the tune of a little more than 15 thousand horsepower. The air flow through the engine at full power is about 150 pounds per second. In the view of the control room screen, the numbers are as follows from left to right along the top of the screen: EGT or Exhaust gas temperature in degrees Celsius, measured just after the last stage of the turbine, which is just behind the second green steel frame holding the engine. Next is RPM. This engine has basically one rotating shaft, and you can just barely see the 1st stage compressor blades moving on shutdown. Engine RPM is of this common shaft, upon which all compressor and turbine stages are mounted. 5,000 rpm is idle speed for this engine. Last, on the right, is lube oil pressure, in pounds per square inch. These engines have roller bearings, not journal bearings like a car engine, so oil pressure is mainly an indication of oil flow. A lot of flow is needed, because the oil is used as a coolant for the main bearings. The engine will run with no oil pressure, except the bearings will overheat, so monitoring of oil flow is very important. This is the same engine you see in "Starting a large turbine engine" Note: All references to podracers will be deleted. If you have to ask why, it can't be explained to you.

If you want one, it'll cost you from around £100,000. The bodywork is all new with sharp creases and a long bonnet, sloping roof and a neat spoiler integrated into the boot lid. The range topping S63 AMG model has a body kit and forged alloy wheels. All S-Class Coupe models feature intelligent headlamps, and the daytime running lights and indicator repeaters feature Swarowski crystals to produce a clearer light. They also get a glass panoramic sunroof which in no way impedes on rear practicality. The sunroof can also be specced with Mercedes' 'Magic Sky' sunroof, which darkens the glass at the touch of a button. It's clear than Mercedes has gone all out with the interior on the C-Class Coupe, and the cabin is different in terms of layout to the saloon. The S63 AMG models also benefit from some sporty add ons, but rest assured - every model in the line-up oozes quality. Like the S-Class saloon, the S-Class Coupe is supremely comfortable thanks to its air suspension, and the Magic Body Control improves this further. However, the S-Class Coupe features some new ground breaking technology called Curve Tilt Control. This system uses the car's computer controlled suspension to lean into the corner like a motorbike does in order to Boost comfort. The S-Class Coupe is also supremely quiet, despite being powered by a 5.5-litre biturbo V8 and being able to go from 0-62mph in 4.3 seconds. The S63 AMG Coupe also comes with upgraded suspension, upgraded brakes and an MCT gearbox. The latter isn't the smoothest system in the world, but overall, it handles very well. It's not an SLS though, but it's not supposed to be. It's been designed to be a very quick, gadget laden cruiser which is the most comfortable of its type on the market - and that's exactly what it is.
