Racing my mustang Lions Dragstrip Willmington (Long Beach) California 8mm film from 1967
Racing my Mustang at Lions dragstrip in Willmington (Long Beach) California in 1967. Taken with a 8mm film home movie camera. Pardon for the poor quality but it is enjoyable because of the vintage. No sound from a 8mm film camera back then.
Lions Drag Strip
A short Video For the greatest dragstrip ever Lions Drag Strip
Vintage Drag Racing, 1959 AHRA Nationals (Part 1)
Footage of the 1959 AHRA Nationals. The very first car that appears in this video is a brown '33 Ford that was owned and driven by Herb Hoover of Kansas. It was the national champion of the A/Altered Class. It defeated "The Lemon," a yellow/gold '33 Ford Coupe owned and driven by Jerry Ross, Founder of Ross Chemical Inc." He finished runner-up, and went on to win the AHRA Nationals in 1960 at Kansas City. Ross Chemical is the industrial chemical division of Applied Chemical Specialties, manufacturer of HyperKuhl SuperCoolant.
Lions Drag Strip incredible Grand Premier accidents 1972
Season opening Grand Premier at Lions Drag Strip in Janaury 1972 marked the return of NHRA sanction to the world famous Wilmington/Long Beach, CA racetrack. Incredible clip is from Part 1 (of 3 part) video documentary "Lions - The Greatest Drag Strip", and shows the unusual amount of accidents that took place, thanks to veteran lensman Paul Sadler and Dave Kerr. Lions would close after its 17-year run just eleven months later.
Return to Lions Drag Strip Long Beach California 2008
This is the third year of featuring restored dragsters that have run the 1320' Lions Drag Strip in its hey day... This video, typical of going to a drag strip, despite John Ewald telling everyone to stand back, you never get to see much when they display cars this way. Typical of the drag strip, all the vehicles require too much support, they stand around the car and block the view.... At the CHRR in Bakersfield, the Cacklefest is blocked by a bunch of folks standing at the concrete wall on the track blocking the view to the grand stands as if the concrete barrier wasn't enough....I have been going to the drags since I was a youngster and it seems the problem is no one can stay seated for a run and your typical day at the drags to this day takes on a Jack in the Box atmosphere.... I guess that is the way it is.....Anyway, the City of Long Beach Chamber of Commerce puts on a nice event and I hope it continues into the future.

Jay's Car 1
We're now going to look at yet another cackle car in the making. This one is being created for Mr. Jay Carpenter. Jay was very much involved in the junior fuel class from 1968 through 1973. Jay and his partner Mike Clancy were very competitive in the junior fuel class and raced at Lion's Drag Strip, Irwindale Raceway, Orange County, The Pond, and Carlsbad Raceway.
But Jay always admired the Woody Gilmore Chassis in top fuel. And so--some 40 years later, he has decided to create, with the help of Freddie Hayhurst, a Woody Gilmore car that incorporates most of the best aspects of the '67,'68, and '69 Woody cars. And some other aspects that will help make this a very fine cacklefest car.
So join us as Jay "takes delivery" of the chassis.
Thanks for watching.
Bill Pitts,
San Fernando Raceway 1967 8 mm film (very poor quality)
Old home movie on 8mm film recording my Mustang and other cars racing at the old San Fernando Raceway in San Fernando California circa 1967.
Sorry, no sound because the old 8mm film home movies were silent. Also the quality is very poor because it did not transfer well to video. But it is interesting anyways.
Nostalgic drag racing pictures

Lions Drag Strip Wilmington (Long Beach), California
Lions Drag Strip, Wilmington, California Late 50's, early 60's
I was born and grew up in Long Beach during this same time, my Dad and uncles would take me there. I can still remember the smell of bleach, burning rubber, and nitro methane. I Miss You Dad.
