Nothing beats the satisfaction of chasing down and pulling old cars from
their resting spots. There is a thrill in the hunt, and a joy in
discovering a car that nobody else knows about. These are the cars that
have been parked for whatever unknown reason ; a blown tranny, discarded in
disgust, set aside for later. Many cars are sentenced to a particular spot
with no release date in mind. They all have a story to tell, and one has to
wonder who fell in love with the vehicle first and plunked down all their
hard earned cash on the beast.
Cracking open the door is like entering a ancient tomb, with the rusty
hinges announcing your arrival. Every old car has it's own unique smell,
some brands even possessing their own odors.
Pop the hood next. Engine bays come in 3 types, complete, empty, and
partially disassembled. A complete bay is the ultimate goal, for that means
there is a small chance that the car might still run. An empty bay puts the
car towards parts-car status, or full swap/update for sure. A half complete
mill is the worst situation possible. One must play detective and figure
out what went wrong and where all the missing parts currently reside.
Pop the trunk, and it's time to go treasure hunting. The trunk can hold
anything from missing parts and nos trim, to possums and many other
shocking items forgotten over time.
The adventures of moving a car that has not moved in decades is immediately
present. Brakes stick, bearings freeze, tires are square and downright
ignorant, and every immobile wreck instantly gains 1 ton over its
still-mobile twin. Might be the 1800 pounds of old concrete in the trunk,
the one the owner conveniently "lost" the keys for. Many times there is
things in the way that were not present when the car was parked 45 years
Naturally, not all these cars go into the garage and come out show queens.
Some get fixed, few get finished, and most get slated for parts service.
The ones that do not meet one persons standards get pawned off on fresh
hunters with less money and more ambition. Maybe the car will help out to
get another twin out of the weeds also and back on the road. But one thing
is for certain, once the derelict wreck is loaded, the standard question
always asked is "Do you know of any more old cars around here?"
