Auction results show that these under-appreciated cars are finally getting the respect they deserve. They're still not quite competing on equal ground with big block Chevelles, but I don't think the market is done with the Oldsmobiles yet, either. This 1967 Oldsmobile Cutlass 442 most certainly will get a ton of admiring glances at the local cruise night. It packs the potent 442 formula: 400 cubic inches, a 4-speed transmission, and dual Exhaust, making it a blast to drive. Painted in a near mirror finish black paint, this car looks awesome in person. Oldsmobiles were for adults, and this is a sophisticated color that doesn't scream "muscle car!" the way Carousel Red on a GTO does. The panel gaps are fantastic all around, and the sheetmetal is smooth and straight, just like it needs to be in order to pull off such a color. There are no patches in the wheel wells, or anywhere else on this car. This is definitely a car that you will be proud to own and show one that will reward a Saturday afternoon washing and waxing it with a Saturday evening of gawks and stares as you go cruising. All the stainless and chrome is in great condition, as are the headlight surrounds and grille. All the 442 badges have been reinstalled, a nice styling touch that makes cars like this special. Under the hood, you'll find the 442 400ci (casting number 390925E), with fresh paint. This motor runs awesome! The engine compartment is has clearly been freshened up recently, and looks great today. The giant 442 air cleaner up top is shiny and beautiful. Up front is a huge radiator. The restoration includes coated headers, HEI distributor, MSD wires, a new alternator, a new gas tank and a recent alignment. There is power steering, and upgraded disc brakes with a fresh power Booster. This car uses a newer Exhaust system and stainless steel mufflers. It runs extremely well, with that distinctive Oldsmobile sound, and will be one of the most bulletproof muscle cars you'll ever own. The engine is partnered with a Richmond 4-speed. The rest of the undercarriage is solid, with no patches and no rust on the frame or floorboards. The rockers are rust free, you can see the spot welds and the fenders are beautiful. The rear lower control arms are reinforced and the sway bars and upper and lower bushings are all in good shape. There are new spindles as well. Power gets to the ground via a GM 12-bolt 3:73 posi rear end. Settle into the black bucket seat interior and you're surrounded by one of the most inviting driving environments available in 1967. The black vinyl buckets have a cool, upscale texture to them that matches the door panels. The Hurst shifter comes up out of the floor instead of a console. There is a column mounted tach along with a trip of aftermarket gauges mounted under the dash. An AM/FM/CD radio with remote sits next to that trio of gauges under the dash. Most of the stuff in here is recent; including the carpets and headliner. All of the interior lights work. The wood steering wheel is beautiful. If you've been watching the market, you know that underrated cars like the 442 and Buick Grand Sports are now coming into their own. Personally, I like them more than their Chevelle cousins; they're every bit as fast, but are more upscale and unique. This one is exactly the kind of car I like best, one you can get in and drive without worries. The mechanicals are solid and it looks spectacular inside and out, perfect for a weekend show or local cruise night. Heck, this is the kind of car I would drive to work every sunny day and not think twice about it, and no matter where you go, it'll get people talking. Assembled in Lansing, Michigan during the second week of February, 1971, this spectacular Oldsmobile is one of only 810 442 W-30 hardtops produced for the 1971 model year. Impeccably maintained throughout its entire life, the car has never undergone a complete, frame-off restoration, and has managed to maintain a great presentation with the help of as-needed refurbishing. Today, 42 years after rolling out of the showroom, it's one head turning GM muscle car that intimidates like a cruise missile and shines like the family's best gold. And yes, that IS a correct combination of GM code 53 Saturn Gold and GM code 19 Ebony Black paint you're currently admiring. Twist this awesome 442's hood locks and you'll find a correct 455 cubic inch Rocket V8 that's branded with a familiar 396021F casting number. Unfortunately, this block's partial VIN was completely milled off during a rebuild, so we can't authenticate its status as a numbers matching piece. But we can definitely tell you the big engine, which creates 350 horsepower in factory guise, is mechanically sound and ready to hit the road. Stomp the throttle and a Rochester Quadrajet carburetor mixes juice from leak-free fuel lines with wind from a correct low-restriction air cleaner, and shoves it into a correct aluminum intake. Behind that intake, a traditional points distributor feeds fire through fresh AC Delco Packard TV R Suppression wires that are loomed around correct "H" branded heads and clean blue valve covers. And below those valve covers, correct cast iron Exhaust manifolds shoot charred dinosaurs into big, true dual pipes. Standard fare for the 442 trim was a factory heavy duty suspension which is augmented with beefy front control arms, better front shocks, thicker coil springs, boxed rear control arms, a standard rear sway bar and, in this car's case, rear air shocks. Behind the wicked 455, the car's original Muncie M22 4-speed, which wears a correct 3925661 casting number, a matching partial VIN and a Muncie (P) M22 (C) assembled on December (T) 17th (17) of 1970 (1) build stamp, sends power to stout 10 bolt rear end that's equipped with easy living gears. And at the corners of the car, chrome Magnum 500s spin fresh F70-14 Goodyear Polyglas GTs around rocket branded center caps. Inside this old school Olds, you'll find a high quality Sienna interior that appears to be mostly untouched original equipment. At the center of the car, rebuilt bucket and bench seats ride on clean brown carpet that's protected by color-keyed mats. In front of those seats, a warp-free dash hangs familiar 442 wood around correct Rally gauges and an original AM/FM stereo. Our documents suggest that this is one of only four Golden Rocket 88 2-door sedans in existence with the J2 engine. The two-tone bodywork on this car is spectacularly done and looks especially striking in black and white with a red stripe in the chrome trim that separates the two halves. Bodywork is beautiful, with straight panels and excellent fit throughout, evidenced by the miles-deep reflections in the paint. The real story on this Olds is the J2 371 cubic inch engine under the hood. Fully rebuilt during the restoration, it runs like new and the passing of years has proven that these are some extremely durable engines. Detailing is first-rate too, from the 'Oldsmobile J2 Rocket" decals on the valve covers, to the correct 2-barrel carburetors, to the original power steering system that's fully functional. You'll note that this engine sports a trio of shorty air cleaners on the carbs, but the original dual oil-bath air cleaner is also included. The engine is backed by a 3-speed Hydramatic transmission, and drives the original rear end. Brakes were rebuilt to stock specifications, as was the suspension, although the car was given a subtle, aggressive look by tweaking the spring height slightly. The car wears a set of chrome Billet Specialties wheels, but the original 15-inch steel wheels and plain hubcaps are included. From the tri-tone seats with patented GM comfort weave cushions, to the positively breathtaking instrument cluster, this interior is new. The original radio has been upgraded to include an iPod interface. The trunk is sporting a custom carpet, but an original trunk mat is included.
