2014 Mercedes S-Class - assistance systems animation
Mercedes has officially unveiled the 2014 S-Class at the Airbus A380 delivery center in Hamburg, Germany.
Designed to become one of the most luxurious and advanced vehicles ever constructed, the 2014 S-Class has an evolutionary design that incorporates a sportier front fascia, a larger grille and a gentle slanting rear end. The sleek styling enables the model to have drag coefficient of 0.24 which is pretty impressive considering the pint-sized CLA has a drag coefficient of 0.23.

The 2013 GL450 is larger, pack with tons of technology, and more refined. On the outside the Mercedes GL is very elegant and refined. This large SUV abounds in chrome and stainless steel parts. On the inside the GL is chalked full of luxurious materials with the ability to seat up to 7 passengers. Although the GL is larger, it weighs less and gets much better fuel economy than the previous generation. There are 3 different trims including the GL350 BlueTEC, GL4450, and GL550. Prices range from $62,400 up to $86,900 but you can top out at over $100k by adding on various packages and options.
There are 3 different engines that power the GL Class. One engine is a BlueTEC diesel found on the GL350 while the other 2 engine choices are V-8 motors. The 2013 Mercedes GL450 is powered by a 4.6 liter V-8 that makes 362 horsepower and 406 lb-ft. of torque. This engine, paired with a 7-speed automatic, averages 14 MPG in the city and 19 MPG on the highway. Keep in mind the GL is a full size 7 passenger luxury SUV weighing over 5400 lbs.
The 2013 Mercedes-Benz GL Class looks like a strong muscular SUV thanks to the large dimensions, stainless steel skid plates, and distinctive design. The Xenon headlights match perfectly to the LED daytime running lights which are a must for any luxury vehicle. The drive system features Mercedes 4MATIC all-wheel drive to help keep the GL on the road.
On the inside the 2013 Mercedes-Benz GL450 can seat up to 7 adults while bathing them in high end luxury and comfort. Cargo room is plentiful at 83 cubic feet of space. The materials are top of the line. The front seats are power operated with the capability to heat. There are 2 sunroofs to keep both the second row and third row passengers happy. There are a few optional packages and many different options that can be added. Mercedes is on the forefront of technology and many innovations can be found on the 2013 Mercedes-Benz GL450.

Stuttgart -- The market launch of the new GL-Class will provide customers with three models to choose from: the GL 350 BlueTEC 4MATIC with V6 diesel engine, the V8 petrol-engined GL 500 4MATIC BlueEFFICIENCY, and the high-performance GL 63 AMG variant with V8 biturbo petrol engine. The new models now come with a wide variety of equipment as standard which was either not available, or only available at additional cost, on the preceding model. With prices starting at €60,900 (€72,471 incl. VAT) for the entry-level model, the new GL also boasts some extremely attractive pricing.
According to Dr. Joachim Schmidt, Board Member of Mercedes-Benz Cars responsible for Sales & Marketing: "The new GL provides more comfort, more safety, and more efficiency than its predecessor and at the same time is even more attractive then ever. With this model Mercedes-Benz is continuing the success story of the GL-Class, something which is also reflected in the sales figures for the current models: in the first five months of the year more units of the GL have been sold than ever before during this period (+14.8%)."
Customers of the GL-Class will enjoy double the benefits when opting for the new model. To begin with, the luxury vehicles for on-road and off-road use now feature an extended range of standard equipment. And on top of this, both the GL 350 BlueTEC 4MATIC and the GL 500 4MATIC BlueEFFICIENCY are being launched with a significant customer benefit of up to €4000. The extensive standard equipment includes a number of comfort details such as electric sliding sunroof, electrically operated EASY-PACK tailgate, EASY ENTRY system for convenient access to the third row of seats from both sides, high-insulation windscreen or electromechanical steering. In the interior, the scope of standard equipment comprises a colour screen with photo-realistic display and dashboard finished in ARTICO man-made leather.
Additional safety comes courtesy of the now standard assistance systems. The new generation of the GL supports the driver with the COLLISION PREVENTION ASSIST* collision warning system, and ATTENTION ASSIST drowsiness detection system. Helping to reduce the burden on the driver significantly when driving at the limits of what is physically possible are systems which detect the load for example, or Steer Assist which supports the driver with a steering moment on the steering wheel in the event of the vehicle oversteering. One of the new GL's innovations and highlights is the standard-fit Crosswind Assist, which helps the driver by targeted brake actuation if the vehicle is affected by sudden crosswinds.
In addition, the GL 500 4MATIC BlueEFFICIENCY also offers Active Parking Assist including PARKTRONIC, the Intelligent Light System, the KEYLESS-GO access and drive authorisation system, 3-zone THERMOTRONIC automatic climate control and multicontour leather seats for driver and front passenger including massage function.
Not to be overlooked as part of the added-value details fitted as standard are also the new engines. They boast better performance with increased output and torque, while at the same time enabling a reduction in consumption levels of up to 20 percent to be achieved. As a result, the 190 kW (258 hp) GL 350 BlueTEC 4MATIC achieves an NEDC consumption of 7.4 l/100 km. The V8 petrol model, the GL 500 4MATIC BlueEFFICIENCY, produces 320 kW (435 hp) and powerful torque levels of 700 Nm while consuming just 11.3 l/100 km (NEDC).
Tailor-made off-road equipment
GL customers will also be delighted with the exceptional capabilities of the vehicle when it comes to driving off the beaten track too. With 4MATIC permanent all-wheel drive, a special off-road transmission mode and Downhill Speed Regulation (DSR), Mercedes-Benz is ensuring that the necessary off-road performance is on hand to help make any off-road excursion is trouble-free. Meanwhile, those looking to tackle the harshest of off-road terrain can order the ON&OFFROAD package with step-down ratio and central lock. With this, six specific transmission modes optimise the performance capabilities of the vehicle both on and off the road.

Under the hood is a 5.5L twin-turbo V8 engine that produces 557 horsepower to accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in just 4.9 seconds and achieve a top speed of 250 km/h. Meanwhile, the 7-speed AMG SPEEDSHIFT PLUS 7G-TRONIC automatic transmission features three modes and an automatic double-declutching function for downshifting. Fuel consumption is rated at 12.3L/100 km.

The original GL-Class was introduced to the U.S. as a 2007 model and not too much has changed since that time. The GL is a 5-door 7-passenger SUV. Similar luxury SUVs in this class include the Audi Q7, Infiniti QX, Lexus LX, and the Cadillac Escalade; only one of which offers a diesel model. The starting price is $62,400 for the GL350 with the top of the line GL550 model costing $86,900.
Did you know that diesels only account for 1% of all passenger car and truck sales in the U.S. while hybrids account for more than 3%? For some reason Americans just do not embrace the diesel technology. The 2013 Mercedes GL350 BlueTec is a good reason why you should look into diesel powered vehicles. The engine is a 3.0 liter turbodiesel that makes 240 horsepower and 455 lb-ft. of torque. Most full sized SUVs have a hard time breaking the 20 MPG marker since they are heavy, bulky, and not very aerodynamic. But the 2013 Mercedes GL350 BlueTec averages 19 MPG in the city and 26 MPG on the highway. The transmission is a 7-speed automatic. Like with any Mercedes SUV, 4MATIC AWD is standard as are a bunch of features and luxury amenities.
Even though this GL looks like the original 2007 model, there are actually over 1000 new parts. Mercedes really listened to its owners and they made a lot of improvements over the past few years. There is a ton of rear passenger leg and head room. The GL-Class went from being a quirky German made SUV that was adapted for the American market to a full-blown luxury SUV that is real gem.
