Two lightweight contenders with the punch of a heavyweight, as the BMW 1-Series M Coupé and the Audi RS3 face off. The dynamic duo certainly have one thing in common: a sumptuous output of 250 kilowatts.In the Audi's case it's delivered by the reborn legendary 5-cylinder engine, whose modern direct injection and turbocharger give it a peak torque of 450 Newton meters. That's matched by the BMW, albeit thanks to a 6-cylinder unit with twin turbochargers. An overBoost function can be activated to raise the torque by a further 50 Newton meters. Both make the dash from zero to 100 kilometers an hour in under 5 seconds.

On board footage from the Audi RS3 launch in Monaco on 2011-03-19. 20 selected (amateur) drivers were invited by a German car magazine (sport auto) to participate on the last day of this 2 1/2 week event. Two driver per car were able to test the RS 3 for approx. 4 h. An exceptional opportunity, highly appreciated, great car! Footage was taken from the co-drivers seat on highway Nice to Monaco and on our tour (route 4) near Col de Brouis - we missed Col de Turini ... *sigh*

This small car packs a lot of punch. The RS 3 Sportback is the youngest member of the dynamic RS family from Audi.The turbo-charged 2.5 liter, 5-cylinder engine has 450 newtonmeters of torque. It sprints from 0 to 100 kilometers an hour in 4.6 seconds and on average uses 9.1 liters of fuel per 100 kilometers. The 2.5 TFSI with a seven gear S tronic gearbox hugs the road thanks to quattro permanent all-wheel drive. Drive it! tests the Audi on the twists and turns of Monaco's roads.

Audi RS3 voix off Enfin ! Elle est là. Depuis le temps qu'on l'attendait, voici l'Audi RS3. Encore plus énervée que la S3 et ses 265 ch, la RS3 en a 340 sous le capot, tirés du même 5 cylindres turbo que le TTRS. Extérieurement, la RS3 se reconnaît grâce aux sigles disposés à l'avant, à l'arrière et sur les étriers de freins avant. On la reconnaît également à la calandre en nid d'abeilles et aux prises d'air plus importantes en bas du bouclier avant. Les roues de 19 pouces sont de série et le becquet arrière est plus important. A l'arrière, le diffuseur saute aux yeux, avec la double sortie d'échappement en ellipse. A l'intérieur, plusieurs logo RS3 parsèment l'habitacle. On en trouve sur les seuils de porte, les sièges, le compte-tours, le levier de vitesses et le volant. Et puis il y a un étrange bouton S sur la console centrale...A part ça, la planche de bord reste de qualité très flatteuse, et cette RS3, en bonne compacte, accueille aussi 3 passagers à l'arrière et dispose même d'un coffre généreux. Une gentille familiale, quoi... Contact, et le 5 cylindre s'ébroue, plutôt discret. Il s'agit donc du même moteur que le TTRS, à injection directe d'essence et turbo. Mais sa douce voix se transforme en feulement inquiétant dès que vous appuyez sur le fameux bouton S. Après quelques kilomètres tranquilles, nous décidons d'utiliser le système launch control. On appuie à fond sur le frein et l'accélérateur en même temps : le moteur monte à 4000 tr/min, pas plus. Vous pouvez alors lâcher le frein. Et pan ! Un gros coup de pied vous arrache à l'immobilité avec violence. La boîte S-Tronic à double-embrayage, fournie d'office sur cette RS3, prend ensuite le relais. Elle passe les rapports en un clignement de paupière et vous voilà à 100 km/h en 4,6 s seulement, soit le même chiffre que la RS5 et ses 450 ch. Au passage, le Quattro permet de ne rien perdre en motricité. Premier virage, c'est l'occasion de se rendre compte que la tenue de route est efficace, le contraire eût été étonnant, le châssis sport surbaissé de 25 mm prenant ici tout son intérêt. Peu de roulis ou d'inertie au programme, et une agilité remarquable. Les virages sont passés très rapidement, le tout avec une facilité déconcertante. Les enchaînements sont un plaisir et l'excellent 5 cylindres s'en donne à cœur joie. Même le freinage est à la hauteur. Petite gâterie au passage : un mode spécial vous permet d'afficher au tableau de bord la pression du turbo, la température d'huile, et des temps chrono. Bon, vous l'avez compris, il s'agit d'une vraie bonne sportive, efficace et facile. On ne peut pas lui reprocher grand-chose, si ce n'est un confort très ferme ou quelques hésitations de la boîte en conduite tranquille. Le prix : 55 400 €, tarif unique puisqu'il n'y a qu'une version, celle-ci, en Sportback, c'est-à-dire en 5 portes. A titre de comparaison, la prochaine BMW Série1 M débute à 53 400 €, mais avec deux roues motrices et deux portes seulement...

But LEDs are becoming ubiquitous, and the tech has even begun to trickle into economy cars. Then there was the gauntlet thrown down by BMW a few years back, in which that other German company decided it was going to leapfrog LEDs and work on laser headlights. We know what you're thinking at this point: oh, snap! Well, Audi's not taking BMW's threat lying down, and is bringing a laser-headlight-equipped version of its Sport Quattro concept to the 2014 Consumer Electronics show to prove it. The Sport Quattro Laser Light concept you see here wears four laser-lit peepers. Audi claims its headlights—which are powered by laser diodes, not just pure laser beams—boast a 1640-foot range, which is twice the distance LED high beams can throw light. The laser diodes also are about three times as bright as LED high beams, and each diode measures just a few micrometers in diameter. Actually, on the Sport Quattro, Audi has mixed the laser lighting with its matrix LED tech—probably to continue showing off this trick technology's auto-highbeam capabilities. And although this is Audi's first crack at laser-lit headlights, the company did put a laser rear fog light on the A2 concept a few years back. As for the Sport Quattro Laser Light concept Audi fitted its laser diodes to, it is an adaptation of the Sport Quattro concept shown at this year's Frankfurt auto show. Here, it's painted a rich hue of red, although it appears Audi kept the car's 700-hp hybrid powertrain intact. There's a twin-turbo 4.0-liter V-8 mated to an electric motor and an eight-speed automatic transmission driving all four wheels. At the rear there's a torque-vectoring sport differential, and the V-8 gets an engine stop-start system and cylinder deactivation. Thanks to a 14.1-kWh lithium-ion battery pack, the Sport Quattro concept can whir around for up to 31 miles on electrons alone, while at the other end of the spectrum, it can do 190 mph and hit 62 mph in 3.7 seconds. We don't much care which comes first, laser lights or this 700-hp hybrid, but we'd like to see them soon. Unfortunately, the lights likely are several years away from production. All together now: sweet! At its booth, Audi is showing off this technology in its Sport Quatto Laserlight concept. The A2 a Vegas-worthy twist, it shows of some hight tech features that could make production in the future. Dubbed Sport quattro laserlight concept, the show car is nearly identical inside and out to the one that debuted last September at the Frankfurt Motor Show but it packs new headlights that combine matrix and laser technologies into a single unit. The matrix beams generate light for the low beams while the lasers provide the high beams, creating what Audi says is the ideal lighting for all kinds of driving conditions. The lasers are considerably more powerful than LEDs so they can illuminate the road for up to 1,640 feet.
