How To Diagnose A Fuel Pump Failure - EricTheCarGuy
I had the privilege of visiting Airtex, and while I was there I spoke with Shane Neuman about diagnosing a faulty fuel pump. In this video we go over the basic steps of diagnosing a faulty fuel pump. So if your vehicle isn't starting and you suspect a fuel pump problem, here are some steps to follow to confirm your suspicions. Another 'quick' test is to bang on the fuel tank and then try and start the engine. Sometimes this works, just don't bang too hard, you could damage something. Scotty Kilmer, mechanic for the last 46 years, shows how to find out if your car's fuel pump has gone bad. Some simple tests are all that's needed, and you don't want to guess with a new pump without testing, as some can cost over a thousand dollars to replace. GMC and CHEVY truck easy fuel pump fix - make a hatch
I was on my way to the dump one day and my fuel pump went out. Frustrating... This is my aircraft mechanic way of fixing my fuel pump. Airplanes have lots of hatches. You don't have to take the wings off an airplane to get to the fuel pump. Some people don't like the idea of cutting a small square in their bed and that's ok. But I see people modifying their trucks all the time for purely cosmetic reasons and some of those mods actually make their trucks less useful so I don't think a purely practical modification is out of line. On these GM trucks you can scoot the bed back or drop the tank to get to the fuel pump. Or just make a hatch. Rivet on some tabs and put the piece you sawed out back on with some sealant. If you have a bed liner nobody will know but you. Shoot, chrome the hatch and be proud of it. Now if your $60 ebay fuel pump goes out again it's a 15 minute fix instead of a 4 hour dirty tank drop. And no need for the $400 OEM pump because you're scared to go through the hassle of dropping the tank again. When I took the pump out it was actually just the flex hose that takes the fuel from the pump to the top of the tank that had cracked. But that OEM pump was always very noisy so I chucked it and went with the cheapest pump on ebay which is still going strong after a couple years and is completely quiet. This is a 98 GMC Z71 extended cab 3 door 4x4 but this will work for a lot of trucks.

How to replace a Fuel Pressure Regulator
This is a how to video on how to change a fuel pressure regulator on a 96 LT1 Corvette. This is a similar process for almost all cars. This will be identical to all LT1s and LT4s. Here is the fuel pressure regulator I used (good price too): http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000C9JXSY/ref=as_li_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789& creative=390957&creativeASIN=B000C9JXSY&linkCode=as2&tag=chri0e2-20&linkId= WDX3D6POYJZKJQMJ Here is how to test your fuel pressure regulator: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_oXLUqE4Sf0 This will take 30min max and you will need: -small flat head screw driver -5/16 ratchet or wrench (for battery terminal) -various sized star torx wrenches Steps: -spray the torx bolts with "liquid wrench" or some other nut remover to make it easier to remove the bolts. -start by disconnecting the negative battery terminal. -relieve fuel pressure with a fuel pressure gauge or carefully push a screw driver in the fuel pressure valve. - Unscrew and remove the torx bolt that holds the fuel lines down. (the fuel line that goes to the FPR should be loose now) -Unscrew the torx bolt that holds down the fuel pressure regulator (it screws into the fuel rail). -Have a plastic container under the FPR so that excess fuel can fall into it and not on your engine. -Remove the fuel pressure regulator from the fuel rail -Unclip the fuel line from the FPR and now it should be completely removed -Add motor oil to the o-rings that are on the FPR -Attach the new FPR to the fuel rail first -Attach the FPR to the fuel line and reset the clip - Screw down the fuel line torx bolt -make sure you let the area air out so there are no fumes then attach the negative battery terminal -start the engine and check for leaks You are done! a $300 Job done for $50 **If the video helped, please give it a "thumbs up" and consider subscribing.
