2014 Mazda Mazda3 5 Door Hatchback Review and Road Test
The mainstream compact car segment is the perfect example of the infamous "driving appliance." The Corolla and Civic sell in enormous volume because they are the middle-of-the-road "white bread" option, not in-spite of the vanilla. Unlike many in the automotive press, I don't find anything wrong with that. In fact, I love me some Wonder Bread. But sometimes you feel like a pumpernickel, and that's where the 2014 Mazda3 comes in. Accounting for 30% of Mazda's worldwide volume, calling the Mazda3 their most important product would be putting things lightly. As a result 2014 brings a complete overhaul to every aspect of the 3 and the compact sedan now rides on a platform derived from the larger 6. The "Kodo" design language of the larger sedan has also been brought down to its smaller stablemate to astonishing effect. While the old Mazda3 was all smiles and bubbles, the new 3 is all grown up and aggressive with Mazda's incredibly attractive grille. Before the 3′s release I was quite torn about who was the fairest of them all but now there is no contest. The 2014 dimensions play a huge role in the way the 3 looks on the road. Mazda moved the A-pillar 3.5 inches to the rear making the hood longer, lengthened the wheelbase by 2.5 inches, dropped the height by 6/10ths and made the whole car 1.6 inches wider. So far so good, but somehow Mazda managed to slash the front overhang and increase the wheel-to-front-door distance to an almost RWD like proportion. That would probably have been enough in a segment dominated by slab sides, but Mazda puts two distinctive character lines to separate the 3 from the pack. Out back we have tail lamps that mimic the front styling and your choice of a hatch or a trunk. Opting for the hatch gives the Mazda3 a side profile reminiscent of BMW's X1, not a bad thing to be reminded of. With pricing that ranges from $16,945 (sedan) to a hair under $30,000 (loaded hatch) if you check all the option boxes on a Mazda3 hatch, it's obvious the Mazda spans the price spectrum from white bread in a bag to a paper-wrapped organic artisan cheesy sourdough. Like the Ford Focus, this large price span means the $19,495 iSport and $20,645 iTouring compete with the bulk of Corolla/Civic shoppers while the upper level trims compete with the Ford Focus, Acura ILX, Lexus CT200h, Buick Verano, and the few that shopped Volvo's defunct C30. Compared to the Civic and Corolla, the Mazda3 delivers superior dynamics and more premium dash materials in exchange for less tech and no touchscreen infotainment. This is a dangerous trade in a segment known for placing features before fun. On the flip side, the Mazda3 has everything it needs to compete with the Focus, ILX, Verano and CT200h. Mazda's chassis tuning makes the Mazda the most fun to drive (even considering the ILX 2.4′s Civic Si roots), the infotainment system is entry-level luxury worthy and 2014 brings all full-speed range radar cruise control and ever gadget the Buick and Lexus shopper could want. So is the Mazda3 the perfect pumpernickel for Wonder Bread prices? As good as. Civirolla shoppers who can be convinced to cross-shop will be pleased with Mazda's sexy exterior, comfortable seats and road manners, but those after large seats and large trunks will return to the white bread alternative. I suspect the near luxury shoppers are the ones that will miss out the most however thinking that nothing this tasty could come in a package with a Mazda logo on it. Their loss. Since I had this RL in my shop that had a check engine light AND an ABS light I thought it was a perfect opportunity to put this video together. I get asked all the time about my 'special tool' and it's really nothing more than a Honda 2 pin connector with the input wires soldered together. These connectors might be harder to find than you think but if you run across a junk honda and one of these is on the harness grab it. Even if you don't have the tool a paper clip or piece of wire will do the exact same thing so don't sweat it if you don't have the tool because shorting the connector is all you need to do. Race at Countyline Dragway in Miami, 1/8th of a mile (April 28th, 2012). Brand new tires did more damage than good to my times, I kept spinning 1st and 2nd gear at the track. After checking the tires I found them to be graining really bad, I guess I'll have to wait until that layer is over so I can improve the times. Best time of the night was an 8.53s, worst one was 9.99s. Time on this video was 9.07s. Congrats to Randy on his 8.8s, good time for such a heavy truck!

And when you're a company like Toyota, the end result is a stunning Camry that packs NASCAR-levels of horsepower in a gorgeous 2-door coupe body. Built in cooperation with TRD, the experts here at RK Motors drew on some pretty impressive fabrication skills to create the Toyota Camry NASCAR Edition you see here. Similarities to the full-race Camry you see racing on the big ovals every Sunday are not mere coincidence. The exterior shell of the vehicle is a custom 2010 Camry two-door coupe, fabricated entirely in steel by RK Motors' Charlotte expert metalsmiths. Using the body as a canvas, we installed several racecar features including a custom NASCAR-inspired body kit, Toyota grill, carbon fiber brake ducts with fog lights, and TRD emblems. Other trick details include the NASCAR-style side Exhaust system, carbon fiber rear-view mirrors, and that faired-in deck lid spoiler. The paint job is a show-quality two-tone that emphasizes the car's muscular shape. Underneath the exterior shell lives a powerful TRD NASCAR V8 engine that displaces 358 cubic inches and delivers a cackling 680 horsepower. And yes, before you ask, the engine is fuel injected, not carbureted, and uses distributorless ignition to light the fires. Making it street friendly meant adding A/C, power steering, and a reliable serpentine belt system, which makes this car as comfortable as a stock Camry in the day-to-day grind. Looking at the detailing throughout the under hood area, it's awfully hard to remember that this is a hand-built car, not something off a production line. The engine is mated to a Tremec six-speed manual transmission with a Ram dual-disc street clutch. With a deep overdrive, the potent engine is capable of pushing the slippery shape of the street car deep into NASCAR territory. Shocks are single-adjustable race pieces with coil-overs. The high performance of the NASCAR Camry can be heard through a custom three-inch Exhaust with X-pipe, Thrush mufflers, Quicktime performance cut out, custom side Exhaust tips and high temperature turbo Black coating. The car sits on 20-inch TSW Jarama wheels wearing Michelin Pilot tires. Inside, The NASCAR Camry is far more luxurious and comfortable than its NASCAR relatives, and includes such niceties as a full-sized rear seat. The two-tone leather ties in with the exterior paint scheme, and shows no signs of wear. The dashboard and steering wheel are production pieces, while a billet shifter and SPEK gauges by Proparts mounted above the center stack give it a high-performance look. Comfort is enhanced with air conditioning provided by Vintage Air, and for added safety a four-point roll cage was installed. Other details that give it an OEM feel are little details like the trunk and fuel door release on the floor, the overhead lighting, and power windows and locks. A Pioneer DVE receiver with navigation was selected, while Boston Acoustics supplied the amps and speakers. Together, these components are able to counter the throaty sound of the engine and deliver crisp, clear performance that you'll have to hear to believe. The Toyota Camry NASCAR Edition is fast, comfortable, and fully sorted, with a ton of easily recognized DNA running through its veins. It showcases both RK Motors' design/build capabilities and Toyota's significant commitment to success in NASCAR. Look for it in the TRD display at many of the major auto shows during 2011.

Valve Cover Gasket Replacement Camry V6
Step by step procedure on replacing the front and rear valve cover gaskets in a Toyota Camry with the 1MZ-FE 3.0L V6 engine. Procedure is the same for V6 Toyota Camry, Avalon, Solara, Sienna, Highlander, Lexus RX300 and ES300. Also covered in this video: Spark plug wire and ignition coil replacement, PCV valve and grommet replacement, throttle body cleaning and gasket replacement, EGR replacement, intake plenum removal, spark plug tube seal replacement, air filter replacement, coolant system drain. The intake plenum must be removed to access the rear valve cover. Good idea to replace spark plugs, spark plug wires, PCV valve and grommet and EGR/ Throttle body / Intake plenum gasket while your at it. The job isn't difficult, but its time consuming. Only basic hand-held tools are needed. Tips: Use a torque wrench to tighten valve cover bolts. Use washers to build up the height of crushed washers. Use Permatex RTV on all sharp or uneven surfaces on the valve cover. Refill cooling system with Toyota Long Life coolant and mix 50/50 ratio. Clean the idle air control valve (IACV), throttle body, intake plenum and EGR before re-assembling. Have a friend hold up the rear wiring harness when removing or installing the rear valve cover or tie it to the wipers. Label all electrical and vacuum connections. Freeze spark plug tube seals and use a heat gun to warm the valve cover before pressing the seal in.
