How did you balance the evolution of the design with what people come to expect to see in a Corvette? "We really wanted to create an all new Corvette, every surface, everything people see was intended to be all new but also unmistakably Corvette. In the back of our minds we wanted to bring back the passion of the Stingray; some of the famous Corvettes like the 1959 Corvette racecar designed by Bill Mitchell, or the 1963 split-window. We wanted to bring back some of that passion but necessarily the same design cues. The goal was to create a new Corvette statement going forward that builds on the past but in an entirely new way. So one of the fine balances we did was incorporating a lot of racing technology which you can see in the car via the functional air vents and cooling outlets derived from the racecar while at the same time trying to make the car more sophisticated and upscale." Are we going to see different variations of the Corvette that will allow you to take on higher end GT cars? "Within the new Corvette Stingray line-up we have the Z-51 Performance Package to satisfy those who are looking for more track oriented performance, but then there will be different options at a higher luxury level that can be added on such as faux leather or suede headliner. We are going to have a lot of different ways that you can tailor the car to your needs whether it is more towards the performance end of the spectrum or the luxury GT end. What this will do is not only open the car up to the hard-core performance enthusiasts, but also to those who appreciate cars in general." Will there be additional smaller displacement engines in the future? "I will say the 2014 Chevy Corvette Stingray does have a large displacement 6.2 liter engine, but there is an Eco-Mode with cylinder deactivation which essentially makes the car under certain conditions a 3.1 liter 4-cylinder. With this technology we are allowing people to have the best of both worlds: a large V-8 with 450 ft.-lbs. of torque when you want it and you can also have the fuel economy of a 4-cylinder." The Corvette gets faster with each new generation; will we ever hit a wall in terms of performance? "We keep pushing the technology envelope. On the C6 Corvette, we never thought that the car would make over 630 horsepower in the ZR-1, but we did surpass that figure. And I think the performance will keep on going, people will always want more power and more speed. We are going to keep pushing the envelope as much as we can." 2013 Audi S6 S7 S8 Walkaround with Filip Brabec Director Product Management Luxury Car Video Review
Recently Autobytel caught up with Audi's Product Planning Manager Filip Brabec at the S-Model Launch. Filip was gracious enough to give us a nice thorough overview on all 3 of the new S Models including the S6, S7, and S8. 2013 Audi S6 http://www.autobytel.com/audi/s6/2013/?id=32972 The 2013 Audi S6 is immediately recognizable as a unique vehicle in Audi's product line thanks to a differentiated grille, new body kit, and oval Exhaust out back. The interior features a lot of new items including sports seats, different trim strategies, and a few unique appointments to remind you this is an S-Model. But really what's key about all 3 vehicles is the unique Bi-turbo V-8 engine which produces 420 horsepower in the S6 and S7 and 520 horsepower in the S8 which has some engine modifications in order to withstand that extra power. Torque also jumps from 407 lb-ft. in the S6 & S7 to 481 lb-ft. in the S8. All three of these S Model vehicles have stunning performance. The 0-60 MPH times for the S6 & S7 are 4.5 seconds with the S8 coming in at 3.9 seconds which is incredible for a luxury automobile. The suspension in these vehicles is an Adaptive Air Suspension System that replaces the springs providing an adjustable ride between comfort and sport. The brakes on the S Model line are also upgraded to larger units. The car is lowered by 10mm over the regular A7 and the can be lowered an additional 10mm if you set the ride to Dynamic. This gives the S7 a very sporty ride when you are looking for some spirited driving. Also notice the aluminum optic mirrors that are common to the S Models. Overall the 2013 Audi S7 brings a lot of style together. 2013 Ford Explorer Sport EcoBoost Walkaround & SUV Video Review with Chief Engineer Bill Gubing
http://www.autobytel.com/ford/explorer/2013/?id=32972 Autobytel recently caught up with the Explorer's Chief Engineer Bill Gubing for some in-depth info on both the appearance aspects and the performance aspects of the 2013 Ford Explorer Sport SUV. Up front one of the most notable appearance features is the new front grille. Here we see the contrasting high gloss bars with the low gloss mesh behind that really sets off the front of this vehicle. Ford took the muscular look of the 2011 model and wanted to make the new 2013 model stand out even more. Besides the front grille, Ford created a technical wrap by blacking out the grille, headlights, and also the lower bumper openings. The Explorer name was added to the front of the vehicle for the first time. From the side the large 20-inch wheels with black painted pockets are the first thing you notice. The blacked-out theme continues along the Explorer with blacked-out mirror caps, side skirts, and roof rails. Out back it's more of the same. The taillights have the smoked treatment with the rear diffuser darkened too. The rear eye-catcher though is the dual polished Exhaust tips. Moving to the interior of the 2013 Ford Explorer Sport the first thing you notice is the illuminated kick plate. The interior is all about craftsmanship with many upgrades being added to the Sport trim level. The seats have a sienna color insert with contrast stitching. The Explorer design team looked at European Fashion houses and looked at what was coming out in the Leather world to gain some insights into the future of automobile interior surfaces. The trim pieces have a high metallic look that blend nicely with the blacked-out exterior direction. Sony branded audio is standard with HD radio. The Explorer also features the 8-inch touch screen with MyFord Touch. Most SUV buyers can be categorized as those either looking for fuel economy or those looking for power. Ford met the needs of both groups with the different EcoBoost engine options. The 2.0 liter EcoBoost is perfect for the fuel economy minded customer and the 3.5 liter EcoBoost V-6 for those looking for more power. In fact the 3.5 liter turbocharged EcoBoost makes 365 horsepower. There is a ton of power that needed to be effectively put down to the road. This is where the AWD system was completely retuned optimizing for the torque sensing system making sure the power would be put to the pavement. The wheels were widened to 9-inches and wrapped in a performance tire. In regards to vehicle dynamics; the body structure was stiffened via a tower to tower brace and a cross tunnel brace. Volkswagen CrossBlue TDI Diesel Hybrid Concept Car Video @ 2013 Detroit Auto Show

Autobytel's Editor in Chief caught up with Kevin Joostema who is the Volkswagen GM of Product Marketing and Strategy for some inside info on this new CrossBlue hybrid concept car. The VW CrossBlue concept combines the best of both worlds; a very fuel efficient TDI engine with two electric motors. This highly innovative system takes the world famous line of TDI engines and combines that power plant with a plug-in hybrid system consisting of two electric motors and a lithium-ion battery pack. The result is not only a powerful SUV but a very economical one. The combined power output is said to be 305 horsepower and 516 lb-ft. of torque. Fuel economy figures are estimated at 89 MPGe (electric mode only) and 35 MPG hybrid mode. The CrossBlue Concept Car is a concept study for a mid-sized SUV. What is unique about this concept car is that it is a 6/7 Seat SUV that gets incredible gas mileage. The CrossBlue is a study on what the needs and shape of a future SUV could be. The unique and interesting part is the powertrain. The concept has a dual plug-in hybrid diesel powertrain that has an 89 MPG electric rating and 35 MPG in the hybrid electric assist mode. Volkswagen is using this concept as a study in an effort to gather the public's reaction. VW has experienced year over year growth for 3 years straight and they know that in order to sell 800k vehicles in the U.S. this segment is an important market. I saw the C7 for the first time and it was great! I am still iffy about the tail lights, but in person they are so much better than in the pics.This video is my version of what I think is a good walkaround. The hard top coupe with the carbon fiber top that was in the trunk was a z51 Vette. The convertible was also a z51 vette I tried to cover the whole car and "Lady Stingray" did a good job with the verbal overview. Any questions feel free to comment below! First 2014 C7 Corvette Stingray Sold To Rick Hendrick At Barrett-Jackson
Congratulations to Mr. Rick Hendrick for winning the first C7 Corvette Stingray, Vin #0001, at the Barrett-Jackson auction in Scottsdale, Arizona tonight. Details about the new 2014 C7 Corvette Stingray: (Copied from AOL Autos) Inside a ramshackle industrial facility in northern Detroit, Chevrolet unveiled the 2014 Corvette C7, the model's first overhaul in nine years. It contains a next-generation V8 engine, a small-block LT1 that combines several advanced technologies into one package and takes drivers from 0 to 60 in less than four seconds. But for Corvette, this isn't about statistics. "It's more than just a sports car," said GM design chief Ed Welburn. "It's an emotion. It's a passion. It is a vehicle that is larger than life." For those reasons, it was perhaps the perfect vehicle to headline the first night of the North American International Auto Show. After years of economic doldrums brought on by the Great Recession, the auto industry needed a larger-than-life icon to help celebrate more than 15 million units sold in 2012. Hundreds of sports-car enthusiasts hooted and hollered Sunday night as Chevrolet pulled curtains back and revealed the C7 inside the Russell Industrial Center, which felt more like a nightclub than a factory. They lingered around the bright-red specimen displayed for more than an hour after the reveal. Most of the hard-core already knew some specifics about the model, like it's 450 horsepower and 450 pound-feet of torque. Chevrolet added a twist, announcing the C7 will carry the Stingray name, a nod to the Corvette's early heritage throughout the 1960s. "It matches the concept they had a couple of years ago, and they really hit the nail on the head," said John Dunlap, a 27-year-old Corvette owner and enthusiast who scored a ticket to Sunday's unveiling through the National Corvette Museum in Bowling Green, Ky. He drove his 2002 C5 from Minerva, Ohio to Detroit for the unveiling. Years ago, he was tempted to upgrade to the C6, but was instead glad he waited for the oft-delayed C7 model. "They needed to make it sexier and relate it to its heritage," Dunlap said. "And the interior is going to blow our minds. Hopefully, that's really up there, the quality of the materials. I'm a touchy-feeling kind of guy, and the interior, before, was something that everyone knocked on." Critics had panned the no-frills interior on the C6 model. But that was the least of Corvette's problems in recent years. There were few brands that symbolized the auto industry's crisis better. As General Motors teetered on the brink of bankruptcy, the sports-car market was ravaged by the economy, losing approximately 41 percent of its sales from its pre-recession high. Sales of the Corvette, which debuted in 1953, slumped to their lowest numbers in nearly a half-century, falling to 13,164 in 2011. Worse yet perhaps, the Corvette's more muscular sibling, the Chevy Camaro, gained a ton of attention after a mid-decade redesign that drove sales as high as 88,248 in 2011. But even as General Motors discarded sacred brands and models in the midst of its government-backed rescue, the Corvette endured. "The soul of our company is indeed in Corvette," Mark Reuss, GM's chairman of North America, said Sunday. "Since 1953, through good times and bad for this company, there was always the Corvette, demonstrating what it means to win." If there are nods to the Corvette's heritage in the new design, there are also subtle nods to the present competition. Gone are the car's trademark rounded tail lights, replaced with more boxy lights that resemble those found on the Camaro. That's not an update that sits well with many long-time Corvette owners. "Many individuals are concerned about the rear square lights," said Tommy DeLuca, who owns a 2005 Corvette. "My concern would be how to differentiate the tail lights from other GM cars. The tail lights should be different so that anyone looking at the car will know it is a Corvette." The C7 is one of 13 new Chevrolet products that will hit U.S. show rooms this year. Like many of the others, it arrives lighter than past models. Engineers said Sunday they had trimmed 90 pounds from the car, and used carbon fiber on even the base trim level. Pricing was not announced Sunday night, but it is expected the base model of the C7 will cost more than the $49,600 of the base C6 predecessor. Fuel economy is expected to reach 18 miles per gallon in the city and 29 mpg on the highway. Combine the overhauled interior with the substantial exterior changes with the structural differences and drop in weight, and it's a dramatically different car. "It's a bigger departure from the C6 to the C7 than I think it was from the C5 to the C6," Dunlap said. "It has a more exotic look, a more sexy look. They're trying to get a lot of young people involved, and I think this is the car to do it."
