Cadillac Racing with CTS-V Coupe testing at Sebring

Cadillac is turning their attention to racing as the company has just wrapped up testing of the new CTS-V Racing Coupe. Set to enter competition on Saturday, at the Streets of St. Petersburg, the CTS will battle other contenders in the highly-competitive Sports Car Club of America World Challenge GT series. It will be driven by Johnny O'Connell and Andy Pilgrim, who are no strangers to racing as O'Connell is a three-time GT1 champion in the America Le Mans Series and Pilgrim claimed victory in the 2005 SCCA World Challenge GT class. As for the car itself, it features an aerodynamic carbon fiber body and a supercharged 6.2-liter V8 engine that develops 535 hp (399 kW / 542 PS). While this is 21 hp (16 kW / 21 PS) less than the standard CTS-V Coupe, the car weighs 1,000 pounds (454 kg) less than the production model. According to O'Connell, "The CTS-V Coupe racecar has been very nimble during testing and seems to brake very well. I not only expect it to do well on a street circuit, but everywhere we compete."

Mercedes-Benz is kicking off the 2011 Formula 1 season with a new Silver Arrow and also with a new TV spot. Based around the motto "Racing is a state of mind", the short film entitled "Compliments" depicts the passion of Mercedes-Benz for motorsport and competition. With a touch of humour and self-deprecation, Nico Rosberg and Michael Schumacher play on their internal rivalry within MERCEDES GP PETRONAS team. Former world champion Mika Häkkinen -- an iconic figure who has appeared numerous times in humorous Mercedes-Benz TV spots over the past 15 years -- highlights, with the aid of an energy drink, on which team the rivalry should be focused at the start of the season. "The new Formula 1 season gets under way on Sunday with the race in Melbourne, and the deck has been shuffled again," explained Anders Sundt Jensen, Vice President Brand Communication Mercedes-Benz Cars. "The spot makes it clear, in a rather fun way, that motorsport is a way of life for our brand. In addition, it shows that we don't admit defeat if at first we don't achieve the goals we have set ourselves, but rather that we take up the challenge -- both within our team, as well as united against our competitors." The 45-second spot, created by Jung von Matt, will be shown by all major German broadcasters from tonight until Sunday to mark the start of the Formula 1 season.

The Supercharger's rotors are smaller in diameter than the previous supercharged engine, allowing higher maximum rpm that enables power-enhancing Boost to be generated earlier in the rpm band. That Boost is achieved more efficiently via a more direct discharge port that creates less turbulence, reducing heat and speeding airflow into the engine. The Cadillac supercharged engine also has several unique features designed to support its high output and the greater cylinder pressures created by forced induction, including Rotocast A356T6 aluminum cylinder heads that are stronger and handle heat better than conventional aluminum heads, and lightweight titanium intake valves. The CTS-V's complementing eight-speed automatic is tuned for world-class shift-response times. Smaller steps between gears keep the engine within the sweet spot of the rpm band, making the most of the output of the supercharged engine for exhilarating performance and greater efficiency. The new 8L90 transmission offers full manual control via steering wheel paddles, and Performance Algorithm Shifting to deliver shift performance that rivals the dual-clutch/semi-automatic transmissions found in many luxury performance sedans - but with the smoothness and refinement that come with a conventional automatic fitted with a torque converter.
