2012 Chevrolet Corvette ZR1 hits the Nürburgring

To demonstrate the improvements on the 2012 Corvette, Chevrolet has returned to the Nürburgring with the range-topping ZR1. As the video shows, the car - which features a supercharged 6.2-liter V8 engine with 638 hp (476 kW / 647 PS) and 604 lb-ft (818 Nm) of torque - lapped the legendary Nordschleife in 7:19.63 which is more than six seconds faster than the previous Corvette record that was set back in 2008. 2012 Mercedes M-Class revealed - in brief
Mercedes has officially unveiled the 2012 M-Class. Set to debut at the Frankfurt Motor Show later this year, the redesigned crossover has an evolutionary design that is instantly recognizable as an M-Class. Notable highlights include a prominent front grille, sculpted sides, wraparound taillights and 17- to 21-inch alloy wheels, with the largest rims getting the AMG badge. While the exterior styling is slightly déjà vu, the cabin has been significantly improved with higher quality materials and an enhanced design. The dashboard draws inspiration from the S-Class and features a wide swatch of wood trim. Elsewhere, there's a wider center console, aluminum accents, an updated COMAND system and an optional panoramic sunroof. At launch, three different engines will be offered. The entry-level ML 250 Bluetec has a 2.1-liter four-cylinder diesel that produces 204 PS (150 kW / 201 hp) and 369 lb-ft (500 Nm) of torque. Moving up to the ML 350 Bluetec rewards drivers with a 3.0-liter V6 diesel engine with 258 PS (190 kW / 254 hp) and 457 lb-ft (619 Nm) of torque. Early speculation is that the engine will allow the driver to sprint to 100 km/h (62 mph) in about 7.5 seconds before topping out at 224 km/h (139 mph). Lastly, if you're a petrol fan, the ML 350 BlueEfficiency has a 3.5-liter V6 engine that develops 306 PS (225 kW / 302 hp) and 273 lb-ft (370 Nm) of torque. This model will be able to race all the way up to 235 km/h (146 mph), though its sprint time is slightly slower. Regardless of what powertrain is selected, all engines are paired to a 7G-Tronic Plus automatic transmission and an all-wheel drive system. In terms of handling, all models come equipped with a selective damping suspension. Customers can also order an Airmatic self-leveling air suspension and an Active Curve System with dynamic roll stabilization. Of course, since this is a Mercedes, the crossover can be outfitted with all the latest technology. Options include Night View Assist Plus (with pedestrian recognition), Speed Limit Assist, Lane Keeping Assist, Blind Spot Assist, Active Park Assist and Distronic Plus - just to name a few. The 2012 Mercedes M-Class will be launched this fall, but pricing information is still pending.

NEW Porsche 918 Spyder onboard Nurburgring 6' 57" record lap
The Porsche 918 Spyder supercar has conquered the 20.6-kilometre record lap around the Nürburgring Nordschleife in less than seven minutes. Achieving a best time of exactly 6 minutes and 57 seconds, the super sportscar equipped with a hybrid drive shaved 14 seconds off the previous record. The record, which was previously held for four years, was even broken during the first attempt in the test drive on the morning of September 4. All three drivers -- Former European Rally Champion Walter Röhrl, Porsche test driver Timo Kluck and Porsche factory driver Marc Lieb -- were quicker than the existing record with each lap driving the two 918 Spyder models used, and posted lap times of less than seven minutes on numerous occasions. Ultimately, it was Marc Lieb who posted the absolute best time of 6.57 minutes, driving at an average speed of 179.5 km/h, as measured by Wige Solutions. Marcus Schurig, editor-in-chief of sportscar magazine "sport auto", was on hand as an objective observer of the record-breaking runs. The two sportscars, which deliver an output of 887 bhp (652 kW), were equipped with the optional "Weissach package" to increase the driving dynamics, and lead out on the standard Michelin tyres developed specifically for the 918 Spyder. Corvette ZR1 Nurburgring 7:26.4
I know many people have been very interested in how fast the ZR1 would be at the Ring... Most car enthusiasts are quite familiar with the Nürburgring. Built in the 1920's near Cologne, Germany, "the Ring" is considered to be the toughest and most challenging race track in the world. Over the last two weeks, we have been doing our final tuning and testing there before we start ZR1 production cars. This morning (Friday June 27), General Motors development engineer Jim Mero drove the Corvette ZR1 around the Nürburgring in a time of 7:26.4. Jim commented after the lap that conditions were good except for a strong headwind down the main straight and that the lap was solid, but he felt there were a few places he could have gone faster. The car was bone stock with the exception of the communications and safety equipment. The tires were production Michelin Pilot Sport 2's. These tires have been developed specifically for the ZR1 and will have impressive wet traction and wear (tread wear rating = 220), in addition to excellent dry road holding. Chassis alignment and vehicle height were set to factory specs. Likewise, the engine calibrations were absolutely stock, emissions compliant and the car ran on pump (not racing) fuel. The vehicle was exactly like the cars that will be built in Bowling Green, Kentucky and sold around the world later this summer. Despite posting one of the fastest times ever run by a production car, Nürburgring lap times were not an over-riding priority in the development of the ZR1. The truth is, if the only priority was speed at the ring, the car would not be very pleasant to drive on American roads. The ZR1 is an incredibly capable track machine, but unlike most ultra-high performance cars, it is very easy to live with on a daily basis. The timed lap was run with a rolling start, a departure from our previous practice of standing starts. This is more aligned with current industry practice. The lap was electronically timed and confirmed with two hand-held stopwatches. .
