The Audi A3 is available in three and five-door bodystyles and is one of the best premium hatchbacks on the market. Thanks to its smart, understated design and superior build quality, it's desirable and hangs onto its value exceptionally well. A wide choice of engines is offered, plus manual, automatic and semi-automatic gearboxes - all of which are tough and reliable. A recent 2008 restyle made it look even sharper.
The premium badge and smart styling are a big part of the A3's appeal. It's also good to drive, but while it's refined and well built its chassis lacks the sparkle of mainstream rivals like the Ford Focus. The A3's diesel engines offer great fuel economy and tend to be worth more second-hand.
The five-door A3 Sportback builds on the appeal of the three-door hatchback. The only difference is a redesigned rear, that creates an extra 20 litres of boot space. You still get the same safe and predictable driving experience and a large choice of engines. The model is best suited to young families.

The Audi A3 was the original posh hatchback, swiftly followed by the Mercedes A-Class and the BMW 1 Series. More recently it's been attacked by ever-higher-quality Volkswagen Golfs and Ford Focuses, but the latest A3 moves the game on significantly. It's now the most premium of premium hatchbacks, with the familiar Audi head-turning looks but a new sense of style inside. It's a gadget lovers delight, with lots of hi-tech equipment. There's a range of advanced, efficient petrol and diesel engines, while a greater emphasis on ride quality makes it more comfortable, although there's still some work to do in the sportier models. There's more space inside than in the mark twoA3 and the current model has a five-star Euro NCAP safety rating. Offered initially as a three-door, the five-door Sportback and a convertible will join the lineup in 2013, with the first ever A3 saloon appearing soon after. This is a crucial car for Audi, designed to appeal to ambitious young professionals.

Thanks to its impressive build quality and carefully designed interior, the A4 feels every bit as special as rivals from BMW and Mercedes. With light, accurate steering, plus excellent performance from all of the engines, the Audi A4 is a comfortable, unfussy car to drive. Four-wheel drive is standard with the A4's more powerful engines, while front-wheel-drive versions are best for low running costs. Economy-minded drivers should go for the 2.0 TDIe diesel.

It doesn't matter if you're looking for a car to drive, or to be driven in, the A8 is thoroughly impressive in both areas. It packs a host of clever technology to make the driving experience as seamless as possible, including lights that are connected to the sat-nav and will illuminate junctions, bend round corners and even dip when they sense oncoming traffic. A system called Audi Drive Select also features, and allows drivers to tweak the steering, suspension and gearbox to make the car more sporty or more comfortable. The cabin itself is finished in high-grade materials and is very logically laid out. Customers looking for a bit more space to stretch out in the rear can opt for the long wheelbase version.

The FF is a radical departure for Ferrari, as it's the first four-wheel-drive car that the Italian manufacturer has ever produced. It's powered by a 6.3-litre V12 engine and is capable of speeds over 200mph. The distinctive bodywork was designed by Pininfarina, and the FF offers levels of comfort and space which have never previously been seen in a Ferrari.

On the road, Nissan's Qashqai is a very comfortable to drive, and it's also well built and affordable. It offers a good choice of petrol and diesel engines and there's a four-wheel-drive option if you plan on some light off-roading, or want extra grip and stability to tow caravans or horse boxes. Nissan has a strong record for reliability, and mechanical and electrical problems are rare.

The A1 Sportback is a more practical five-door version of the Audi A1, and is designed to take on the MINI Clubman. It's slightly taller and wider than the three-door version, which creates a little extra room for passengers in the back. The additional rear doors now make the A1 a realistic proposition for families with small children, although space is still tight in the back for adults.

The latest Volkswagen Jetta shares its looks with the larger Volkswagen Passat, as VW tries to distance its compact saloon from the Golf that it shares many of its components with.
The latest model has a longer wheelbase than the Volkswagen Golf, so there's more cabin space, while the car looks smarter, thanks to a shorter rear overhang for the saloon boot. As with the rest of the VW range, the Jetta is built to a high standard from high quality materials. Engines include the firm's 1.4 TSI petrol, plus 1.6 and 2.0-litre TDI diesels. The 1.6 TDI is also offered with VW's BlueMotion Technology pack, which saves fuel by turning the engine off when the car is in neutral.

The Audi A5 Coupe takes the underpinnings of a four-door A4 saloon and wraps them in a two-door body. Put the two side-by-side, though, and you'll see the A5 is the much sportier looking car. It's lower and wider, and has less rear head and legroom than the A4, although the boot is nearly as big.

You'll like the fact that this is one of the best small family cars to drive, and offers a range of powerful diesels. Even though the firm suspension and sporty ride is not to as comfortable as some rivals, a January 2008 facelift has improved looks and means interior quality is a close match for upmarket alternatives like the VW Golf. ECOnetic editions offer great fuel economy, while high performance ST editions are fun to drive. Both three and five-door models are spacious, but the latter is the better family choice.
