Scion FR-S Chasing Porsche 997 GT3 @ Circuit Of The Americas (Track)

Best lap from Feb 01-03 was a 2:40.8 and top speed in the back straight was 117 MPH, as the day warmed up so did my front tires and i started getting a bit of understeer and my time would go up. The FR-S is a well balanced car but lacks power in a track like COTA. Im sure the GT3 driver was either on street tires or not pushing the car all the way but man i had fun chasing him down. Just for reference a well setup gt3 should clock a 2:22.0 - 2:32.0 depending on driver, brakes, suspension, and tires. It's an ongoing project that may never be finished, because of Frank's never-ending obsession with speed. We had to take it for a ride.

By Chris Moran from Chicago Motor Cars I have to admit, I was not excited about this car at all. Just the overall concept of the car seemed too plain, too refined, too accommodating, things Lotus has never really been about. The Lotus Elise is one of the most exciting cars available today, but any car that can replicate replays of vintage F1 races through your daily commute should get your heart pumping. From its size and luxurious interior to its dead silent cabin, I can't imagine why this car would appeal to a Lotus enthusiast. The first time I sat behind the wheel, I was moving the car into position so that Dave could take some pictures. Immediately, the gauges fired up with a clear multi-function display brightly lit. I pushed the featherweight clutch to the floor and engaged reverse. Before my eyes, on the navigation screen was a crystal clear image of the area behind the car. It took a second to register that a rear view camera was indeed factory-installed on this new Lotus, and a couple more to realize that the beeping sensation I was hearing was the factory park distance control. The steering was super quick from lock-to-lock, and the power-assist felt very linear. Taking a closer look, we studied the drivetrain. With a Toyota-sourced 3.5 Liter V6 behind the rear seats, this engine produced 278 horsepower. Not the most potent plant in the world, but we'd see about that when we hit the street. All controls were intuitive, the fit and finish were superb, and the build quality seemingly follows suit with the Lotus Elise/Exige as the most solid chassis sold in the US. So far, nothing to disappoint. On the road, the Lotus is light and nimble, but the structure is rock-solid. I hit a couple of larger bumps in the road and the chassis absorbed them perfectly. The ride is supple, some may even say soft, yet you lose no balance or agility. The shifter is a huge improvement from Lotus factory shifters from the past, and the light clutch is easy to modulate. Acceleration is seamless and there is no sound or play in the driveline. The handling is so scalpel-precise that the sensation of power-assist leaves your mind. The steering feels manual on the road, and the balance is incredible. You can drift the rear of the car without worry of its rear weight bias hurting you. The engine has a good amount of low-end torque, but when spun to redline makes violently quick shifts that don't take a trained professional to master. It's extremely roomy, with enough to fit a 6'4" individual with comfort. Back seats are more of a parcel shelf, lacking what most people would consider legroom. There is none. Fuel economy is exceptional, and the maintenance costs are so incredibly low. So low that it makes me wonder why Lotus hasn't capitalized on the service and reliability of their new cars. To summarize, the Lotus Evora far exceeded my expectations. In fact, I would compare this car closest to one of my lifelong favorites, the Porsche 911. Think about it, 2+2 seating, rear (mid) engined, rear wheel drive, similar power and handling, and they both feel equally solid. Now all Lotus needs to do is develop a loyal following like Porsche, something they've successfully built for over 50 years now.
