Gemballa MIG-U1 - Startup and Driving in Monaco
The Gemballa MIG-U1 is a fairly extraordinary car, it's absolutely unique as a custom version of the Ferrari Enzo (which itself is fairly unique as one of just 399 cars). It was the final car built by Uwe Gemballa himself before he sadly passed away in controversial circumstances in South Africa in 2010. In any case, this car, which is owned by the Galadari family who run the Exotic Cars dealership in Dubai, was delivered to Monaco for the summer but has only moved on a very limited number of occasions. Bugatti Veyron CHASE! R8 V10 Spyder left behind...
My Audi R8 V10 Spyder was no match for the Bugatti Veyron but made for a hugely enjoyable drive! At last week's The Supercar Kids' event, Jay Broom (aka JayKayBi) offered the chance to spend the day with something rather special, a Bugatti Veyron! And not just any Veyron, the 16.4 Coupe belonging to Lord Pembroke of Wilton House, home of the annual Wilton Classic and Supercars event, one of my personal favourite events in the annual car calendar taking place each August. Wilton is also home to the soon to commence 'Wilton Wakeup' events, kicking off in spring 2013 they will be Sunday morning gatherings for car nuts in the West of England, more information is to follow on that front! The Veyron itself is wrapped in a Gulf-inspired livery, created by radio-controlled-car painter Ian Cook of PopBangColour and placed on the car to promote the Wilton Classic and Supercars event. A Quicksilver Sports Exhaust system is also installed in the Bugatti, giving it extra noise; an area the car is often criticised. The sound it made on first start from cold certainly took me by surprise! DONUTS! QuickSilver R8 V10 Spyder - Burning Rubber in the Shmeemobile
What else do you do when your tyres are just about finished and the new ones are booked in to be put on, yes take the R8 Spyder and spin, spin, spin! I've been recommended a few times to try out the new Michelin Pilot Super Sport tyres, rather than the stock Audi choice of Pirelli, so as my first tyres came to an end, I got a set in ready and decided to wave farewell to the old ones in the best possible way, with a little smoke! The Dubai Police supercars depart their resting grounds on display inside the trade centre following the Dubai Motorshow, and it wouldn't be right for them not to use their lights. First up is the Brabus B63S, dropping off its stand and heading out, before the Lamborghini Aventador squeezes out the door and of down the road. Then we have the Mercedes SLS AMG and Bentley Continental GT. The Dubai Police Supercar effort has been part of raising awareness for Expo 2020 as Dubai was a candidate host city; the good news is that they have won the vote and will be hosting the Expo. McLaren P1 - Chase in Ferrari 458 Spider!
I was out for a ride in the Ferrari 458 Spider from ecurie25 when completely out of the blue a McLaren P1 test car drove past! Instantly recognisable for me, but too quick for my camera to be out I thought that was it so we returned to filming the Ferrari. Half an hour later we went around a roundabout and there it was, sitting there! Cue a chase, just being behind the new hypercar from the British company was incredibly exciting so I filmed a few clips in the hope he might put his foot down. Getting the shots was good, and doing it from a 458 Spider was even more fun! As it happens, the P1 led us back towards the McLaren Technology Centre, before getting caught up behind a broken down car at the roundabout outside, I used the opportunity to jump out and film it from the pavement to hear it roar into the centre. I'm still waiting to come back down to earth, what a spot! On this episode of Head 2 Head, Jonny Lieberman pits an American icon against itself. Since 1984 AM General's Humvee has served as the U.S. Military's primary multipurpose workhorse. However, after adding nearly three tons of armor plating, the already slow, ill handling beast gets slower and clumsier. One solution is to replace it with a new truck, but that would cost us a fortune. The other comes from Banks Engineering, which adds more sophisticated turbocharging as well as a revised, active suspension. If the Humvee is going to go down in history as the truck version of the B-52, it needs upgrades similar to what Banks is selling. That said, the Banks Humvee does cost a good deal more than the base Humvee. However, it's a much cheaper alternative to something like an MRAP or the Oshkosh L-ATV. MTM Supercharged B7 Audi RS4 Clubsport! Launch, 8250 RPM, Crazy Insane sound!
Test drive of MTM's Amazing Supercharged B7 Audi RS4 Clubsport! The MTM RS4 Clubsport. What praise can we possibly give to the regular RS4 that hasn't already been said? It's simply a phenomenal and highly-capable 4-door unlike anything else available. In stock form it's good enough to lap the Nürburgring Nordschleife quicker than any other 4-door sports sedan on the market. It's exceptionally luxurious and well equipped. It also comes with the tried and proven all weather conquering quattro driveline now with a rearward torque bias. It's not perfect to all people though. And so where there's room for improvement MTM steps to the proverbial plate. The centerpiece of the MTM RS4 Clubsport package is the liquid-to-air intercooled, Lysolm-type, belt driven Supercharger that resides directly underneath the carbon fiber bulge on the hood and feeds the car with 0.45 bar (6.5 psi) of fresh air. This cleverly designed package sits smack dab between the cylinder heads within the "V" of Audi's 4.2 liter V8 and Boosts power levels to a very impressive 535 horsepower and 428 ft-lbs of torque. The engine internals and compression ratio remains 100% stock. A special carbon fiber vent on the hood gives extra clearance to the Supercharger and helps keep underhood temperatures checked. The blower assembly completely replaces the stock variable length intake manifold. It's important to note that the RS4 Clubsport is still a prototype, meaning it is quite clearly a work in progress. The final version will certainly be finely finished and up to OEM standards and aesthetics, as with all MTM vehicles. The particular Supercharger on this press car has actually been adapted from a standard S4 application, which is evident by the holes in the intake runner where an IDI fuel injector would normally reside. This same system is available on the normal S4 and can produce up to 503 horsepower. Roland has set the development durability goal of 50,000 km for this Clubsport RS4. This means he is not going to release the kit into production until the test car reaches 50,000 trouble free kilometers on the stock engine internals. Currently, the press car has seen roughly 15,000 km, so there is a ways to go. However, press cars tend to see slightly more, ummm, "wear and tear" than the average car so one can rest assured that it has been thoroughly tested and developed under all conditions. We drove this car hard, and it ran well without a hiccup. Development of MTM's Supercharger system was far from easy. Three important factors contributed to the overall difficulty of the project; size (component packaging), heat, and ease of installation. Audi has already used up nearly all available space by just fitting a V8 into the A4 chassis. They've shortened the engine length as much as possible by using smaller than usual bore-to-bore spacing and fitting the accessory/cam drive to the back of the engine. This didn't leave Roland much real estate to work with on the front side. A Supercharger setup works by turning an air compressor (blower) mechanically with a belt and pulley system. The extreme revving capability of the RS4 engine means the entire belt drive system must be able to withstand high speed and high torque operation. At full Boost, the Supercharger can require 50 or more horsepower from the engine to spin itself, which must be transmitted through this belt. Considerable effort went into designing the belt/drive assembly to fit into the small space and function without slippage under all conditions. The additional heat generated by this setup necessitated the carbon fiber scoop which peeks menacingly from the hood area. MTM also concluded intercooling was vital for safe and consistent power delivery. Trials without intercooling showed that intake air temperatures would climb too high, which in turn would decrease power output as the ECU pulls back ignition timing to compensate. Higher temperatures also increase the likelihood of engine knock, not something welcome to an owner when a $30,000 RS4 engine is in stake. The water-to-air intercooling system taps cleanly into the factory cooling system adding an additional heat exchanger before passing through the Supercharger. "Power is nothing without control". This cliché statement holds especially true with MTM's RS4. Simply adding more power to a stock RS4 would result in a less rounded vehicle, perhaps not as effective overall as what originally rolled off the line at quattro GmbH. The remainder of the modifications were therefore designed to make maximum use of the additional power produced by the Supercharger. Weight saving measures bring the curb weight of the Clubsport down to a claimed 1660 kg (3650 lbs). This is about 350 lbs less than a US-spec RS4 even while counting larger brakes and additional safety features.
