Part 12: 13B Rotary Engine Rebuild - My 76 Mazda RX-5 Cosmo Restoration
Just as I promised last episode, it is finally time to build the engine! Part 12 of my RX-5 Cosmo restoration covers the entire process of building the 6 port 13B Mazda rotary engine. While this engine is a hybrid of GSL-SE RX-7 and Cosmo parts, the process is the same for any rotary from a 12A to a 13B NA, 13B turbo, 13B-REW or any other variant of the 13B. This video shows the whole process of the engine build, starting from measuring the rotors and covering everything else including clearancing the side seals, assembling the rotors, complete assembly the short block, setting the eccentric shaft end play and installing the front cover and everything underneath it. It's probably the most complete engine build video outside of what you can buy from the vendors, and as such, is an hour long. After this one, I'm going back to videos under 20 minutes. Experimental Rotary Engines: Model 32
This follow-up to my previous videos summarizes the current design for the benefit of those that are experimenting with Model 30 based engines. Model 32 is not yet finished but most of the mechanics are in place. It's been dry run & tested for compression, friction & wear. Performance so far is superior to Model 30. Completing the control electronics & firmware will require more time. Model 32 is similar to Model 30 (previous videos) except that: the rotors are steel lined with graphite; the vanes pivot (rather than slide); vane engagement is electronically controlled; seals, accuracy & fit are improved; parts count & reciprocating masses are reduced; rotor phase angle is adjustable to provide expansion ratios approaching 30:1; compression ratios are adequate for burning vegetable/diesel oil using direct fuel injection; the Lexan cover is replaced by a dimensionally more stable aluminum reinforced plate glass. Fins will be routed into the exterior body as needed for cooling. I should finish evaluating Model 32 by fall '07. The next design (Model 33) inherits much from Model 32, except that it uses 1 rotor & 2 vanes. The purpose of this open source program is to develop more fuel efficient ICE's capable of operating on a variety of fuels for the benefit of our environment, our economy & our future. This RE Amemiya Super Greddy 7 RE20B was built for the annual Tokyo Auto Salon. This exquisite machine is packed with RE Amemiya's tuning knowledge and is setup for the street. The intent of the vehicle is of course, running the Wangan highway. The machine was designed to easily reach high speeds and provide unmatched stability at 300km/h. This makes 300km/h seem like leisurely cruise. The three rotor 20B engine was removed from a Mazda Cosmo. It is fairly easy for RE Amemiya to build a 300km/h engine, and it can be done with a 13B. Then why choose a 20B? The 13B is notoriously known to have a short life span, especially after it has been modified. Also, it lacks the low end torque, and it does not hold the power to leisurely reach, and cruise at 300km/h like the 20B. Therefore, the 20B was chosen, and the low end torque demise was solved. But even though it's a rotary engine, doesn't mean that it is a easy swap. The weight distribution of the well balanced FD becomes thrown off. The 20B had to be offset 10cm to the rear and 6cm to the front in reference to the 13B. Also, the body, subframe, and the propeller shaft all need fabrication. The exterior was dressed up with the RE Amemiya 2006 model Aero kit. It consists of a Porsche 997 front headlights, and the rotary themed rear bumper. The sides consist of super wide fenders to accentuate the whole look. The vehicle was completed just in time for the first ever Pre Tokyo Auto Salon event held in the United States.
