Part 2: Installing shocks, struts and springs on a BMW 3 series 99 thru 05 (E46)

Need additional tech help? Please visit our tech blog for thousands of Tech and DIY BMW and MINI articles at: http://blog.bavauto.com/ --- In Part-2 of this two part series, we will replace the rear shock and spring. See Part- for the front shock/spring/strut replacement. The Bentley repair manuals will cover standard shock and spring replacement for the various BMW and MINI models. This DIY will assume that the DIYer has the applicable Bentley manual for additional reference as well as fastener torque values. Note that we will be installing the Bilstein PSS-10 coil-over kit. However, the procedures would be the same for any common shock/strut replacement (including installing sport springs, if desired). PARTS USED: • New shocks/struts (Bilstein, Koni, Sachs, etc.) • New sport or stock replacement springs, if desired (BMW, BavAuto, Eibach, etc.) • New Shock install kits (compression bumpers, dust shields, spring pads, etc.) • New upper strut and shock mounts • New strut & shock mount gaskets (as required) • Rear shock mount reinforcing plates TOOLS USED: • Bentley Repair Manual • BavAuto Non-Marring pry bar set • 13mm through 18mm ½"drive socket & ratchet set with various extensions • 4mm through 8mm Allen keys or bits (for ratchet use) • 13mm through 18mm combination wrench set • Assorted flat and Phillips screwdrivers PROCEDURE: REAR (applies directly to the E46 3-series, but the E36 3-series uses the same steps and procedures): 1) Safely raise the rear of car, with suspension hanging. 2) Remove the wheels. 3) Place a jack under the lower shock mount eye or the wheel hub assembly. Slightly raise the suspension (just enough to remove the downward tension on the shock). 4) Remove the lower shock mount bolt. 5) Lower the jack and allow the suspension to hang free. 6) Remove the trunk side trim panel to access the upper shock mount. 7) Remove the two 13mm nuts from the upper shock mount, at the top of the shock tower. 8) Lower the shock out of the vehicle. 9) Assemble the new shock with new compression bumper, dust tube and upper mount. Be sure to re-use the large lower and upper washers for the upper mount. These washers must cup away from the mount. lower washer cups downward and upper washer cups upward. 10) If the spring is being replaced, it can be removed BEFORE re-installing the shock. Have a helper pull downward on the wheel hub assembly and pull the spring out from between the chassis and the upper control arm. 11) Using new upper and lower spring pads, install the new spring in the same manner as the original was removed. Install the new spring pads, then install the spring. 12) Install the new shock. Place a new shock mount gasket on the shock mount and insert the assembly up into the shock tower. If installing a shock mount reinforcement plate, place the plate over the two shock mount studs, on top of the shock tower, before installing the two nuts. Install the two nuts. Install the trunk trim panel. 13) Install the lower shock mount bolt. Be sure to install the washer on the bolt before installing the bolt. Use the jack to raise the suspension assembly to align the lower shock mount with the hub mounting point, so the bolt can be inserted and threaded. Tighten the bolt. 14) Repeat for the other side. -------- All products noted in this video can be purchased in our online store, http://www.bavauto.com/, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. A 2001 3.0i Z3 with the M54 engine was used for this video. The procedures shown can be applied, in general, to most BMW models that have serpentine type accessory drive belts. This includes most 6-cylinder models from the early '90s on and all V8 models. Note that the models shown here uses a mechanical type belt tensioner for both the main belt and the AC belt. Some models employ a hydraulic tensioner assembly. The replacement procedures are slightly different, as they are for the V8 models. The applicable Bentley repair manual will address the details for various models. Need additional tech help? Please visit our tech blog for thousands of Tech and DIY BMW and MINI articles at: http://blog.bavauto.com/ --- This DIY (Do It Yourself) How To Video shows how to install the Powerflex urethane bushing sets in the rear subframe, trailing arms and differential mount on a BMW E30 3-series (84-91). While the specific model shown is an E30 chassis, these general procedures are applicable to all early BMW subframe and semi-trailing arm chassis (Bav, CS, 2002, E21, E12, E28, E34, E24, E23, E32, E31) as well as the E36 based Z3 and 318ti. One of the most common maintenance and/or upgrade areas on our BMWs and MINIs is the various suspension bushings. We've talked at length about the front suspension control arm bushings, in multiple Fast Times articles and DIY videos. In this DIY article and video, we'll take a look at the rear suspension bushings. Specifically, we will be removing the well-worn rubber bushings and installing the Powerflex urethane bushings on a BMW E30 3-series (84-91). This suspension design applies to all BMWs up through the '90s (2002, Bavaria, CS, 3-series through 91, 5-series through 96, 6-series through 89, 7-series through 94, 8-series, Z3 and 318ti). We're installing the Powerflex urethane bushings into the subframe, trailing arm and differential mount positions. This will greatly improve the vehicle stability and performance. Also note that after the install, the owner (BavAuto Advisor, Ken B.) has experienced no negatives in harshness or vibration due to the firmer bushings. He notes that this is now the best driving E30 3-series he has ever owned or driven (it also has the Powerflex front control arm bushings installed). Follow along as we perform the bushings install on this 89 325i. BMW Angel Eyes, Bulbs, Halos & Headlights - BMW Expert Guide
http://www.stealthauto.com/bmw-angel-eyes.aspx?affid=youtube This video walks you through the basics of what you need to know when upgrading your angel eye headlights. BMW Angel eyes are car lights (actually lighted rings) which are installed inside your bmw headlights. The rings are installed/attached around low beam and high beam shrouds of regular or projector headlights. In the past Angel eyes have also been known as halo headlights or "demon eyes"for the intimidating look they give to the vehicle when it's seen coming down the road. They also make a terrific compliment to your HID fog lights. Angel Eyes typically light up using LED or CCFL technology and therefore have no moving or rotating parts within the lights. They are a single ring with the lighting mechanism built into the ring itself. To find our more, simply visit us at http://www.stealthauto.com. TRS Tech: Installing Morimoto BMW E46 SMD LED Angel Eyes
The Morimoto SMD Angel eye kit for the BMW E46 installs easily with nothing more than clips and double sided foam tape into all BMW E46 3 series headlights. The headlights can be opened easily by un-clipping the front lens covers from the rear housings. On xenon/bi-xenon E46 headlights, two of the four clips need to be modified so that their end does not interfere with the shroud covering the projector. On the other (high beam) side, the clips can be used without any modification to hold the ring in place. The kit also includes several pieces of 3M double sided foam tape, which can be applied on the lower perimeter of the bezel, to add a little extra grip on the bottom of the rings. They're not here to hold the rings on, rather just make sure they don't flop at all.
