My Chevy Sonic-Having so much fun
y Y "y" "Y" Read all about it :-) http://fayobserver.com/articles/2012/03/10/1161404 Winning entry in the Reed-Lallier Chevrolet in Fayetteville, North Carolina "Amp Up the Sonic" video challenge. Featuring the Hughes Family from Parkton, NC. Written, performed, recorded, filmed & edited by Jack Hughes, Vicki Hughes, Jackson Hughes, & Robert Hughes. PARKTON - Jack and Vicki Hughes like to make up what Jack calls "silly little songs." "We make them up just driving down the road, with the kids," Jack said. "It's always good for a laugh." A recent creation by the Hughes family ended up being worth a lot more than that. It placed the Parkton family on TV, extolling the virtues of a compact car. The $1,000 first prize didn't hurt either. "It was so much fun, we didn't even think about the money," said Robert Hughes the youngest member of this unlikely quartet. "Well, not much." "They got free pizza out of it," Jack Hughes replied. "They worked cheap." Besides pizza, the family got to see themselves musically extolling the virtues of the Chevy Sonic on local TV. The final commercial also can be viewed on Youtube - which , Vicki Hughes admits, may get them more attention than the TV spots. "I think it's been on a few times late at night," she said with a laugh. "People keep asking us when it's going to be on the air, and I tell them to keep watching." The project began last fall when Jack Hughes, a musician and furniture repair expert, heard about a local contest. Reed-Lallier Chevrolet of Fayetteville was offering $1,000 to the winner of the "Amp Up the Sonic Video Challenge." "The idea was to create a video telling the world what a great car the Chevy Sonic was," he said. "I had one of those silly road songs called 'I Love Kitties,' the sort of thing you sing with your kids in the car. Vicki had a video camera, and the kids agreed to work for free pizza. We were all set." Except for one problem: They didn't have a Chevy Sonic. "We had a van," Vicki Hughes said with a shrug. "So, we improvised." After drawing up their commercial on a story board, the family took turns lip-syncing a song Jack Hughes whipped up in his home studio: "more like a closet," he said. "The kids took to it like a fish to water. But I think I sounded like Robert Goulet ... which, in this case, isn't a good thing." The family wrapped up the commercial just before the Halloween deadline. Then, they waited. "Honestly, we just about forgot about it," Vicki Hughes said. "It was a fun family project, a neat way to have some fun." In December, they got a phone call asking them to reshoot the video - this time, using a new Chevy. "We had one day to shoot the whole thing," Jack Hughes said. "And this was just before Christmas, meaning the sun was setting at like 4:30. "So, we had every light we could get our hands on in the front yard, jumping around while our neighbors came out to see what the heck was going on." The result was surprisingly professional, given the lighting and tight deadline. The commercial still pops up occasionally, and the family gets phone calls from friends whenever it airs. As for the money, they donated half to charity and tucked the rest away. And the commercial is now enshrined on Youtube, to be viewed any time. "It was a lot of fun to do," Jack Hughes said. "It's not your average family project, but we had a ball. "We didn't get a car, but we had a ball." Want to Watch?
