What We Know About the 2010 Dodge Hornet
Tough times often put paid to even the best-laid plans, and so it is with
Chrysler's promised new compact car, the Dodge Hornet, in today's dour U.S.
economy. Expected to bow as a 2010 model, the Hornet will now be
essentially a reskinned version of the popular front-wheel-drive Nissan
Versa and built alongside it in Japan. Styling will borrow elements of the
ugly-cute 2006 Hornet hatchback concept, but the rest of the package will
be mainly Nissan.
The first phase was Chrysler supplying Versas for sale in South America
under the Chrysler or Dodge label. That led to further talks and the more
ambitious idea of a product swap for North America. Nissan would handle the
2010 Dodge Hornet, while Chrysler would return the favor by designing and
building a new large pickup truck to replace the slow-selling Nissan Titan.
Presto! Each company lends its special expertise to erase a competitive
deficit at the other, and both save big bucks to boot.

With the 300, Chrysler created a smash hit. When it was introduced, the
upscale style of this sedan captured the admiration of people from all
walks of life, and the best part, you didn't have to be a millionaire to
afford one. Learning from its success, it appears Chrysler may be looking
to use the same formula with its new Imperial Concept. Introduced at this
year's North American International Auto Show, the Imperial is positioned
to be Chrysler's flagship luxury sedan, that is, if they decide to build

MORE DETROIT AUTO SHOW:
Chrysler surprised the crowd on the opening day of the 2009 Detroit Auto
Show with the rollout of its four-passenger 200C EV, a dramatic,
performance-inspired flourish to the automaker's electric-vehicle lineup.
The 200C EV is a shortened version of the rear-wheel-drive Chrysler 300C.
Chrysler said the show car features a 40-mile all-electric range with zero
fuel consumption. The four-seat sedan sprints from 0 to 60 mph in just
seven seconds and has a top speed "greater than 120 miles per hour,"
according to the automaker.
"[The Chrysler 200C EV] provides a glimpse at the possibilities for a
next-generation Chrysler performance sedan," said Ralph Gilles, Chrysler
vice-president of design. "With the 200C EV, we were able to maximize the
effectiveness of the ENVI powertrain with the stunning, wind-cheating
vehicle shape, while pushing toward the future with the avant-garde
interior and advanced in-vehicle connectivity."
Key details include a cabin that has been stripped of switches and levers.
Chrysler said all of the vehicle functions, settings and uconnect features
on the 200C EV are "managed via a panoramic multimedia touch screen, a
passenger-dedicated techno-leaf' and a stowable tablet PC." The techno-leaf
houses personal climate controls and an infotainment system.
The 200C EV rides on a 116.1-inch wheelbase versus a 120.0-inch wheelbase
on the 2009 Chrysler 300.
