Volvo S60 vs Audi A4 vs BMW 3 Series review - Auto Express

The new Volvo faces some tough competition. The BMW 3-Series is our current class champ, combining engaging driving dynamics with top-notch quality, low running costs and a line-up of efficient engines.
Joining it is the Audi A4, which sets the standard with its classy looks, fantastic cabin and composed chassis. So, will the usual suspects overwhelm the S60 -- or can the new kid on the block cause a major upset?
New Mercedes C-Class v Audi A4 v BMW 3 Series group test - Auto Express
Welcome to the toughest of three-way fights. The models in this test
dominate the compact executive sector, but does the arrival of the revised
Mercedes C-Class upset the established order?
The German company has carried out what it's calling a 'comprehensive
modernisation' to help the saloon leapfrog the BMW 3-Series and Audi A4.
Revised exterior styling, cleaner engines and a better-quality cabin are a
few of the changes to have been rolled out, but will they be enough?
Audi A7 review - can it match rivals from BMW and Mercedes?
Is there such a thing as too much choice? Audi clearly doesn't think so.
The German firm's range already consists of 20 different body styles, and
now there's a new one to choose from -- the new, Mercedes CLS-rivalling A7

This is the new Audi RS7 and its arch-rival, the BMW M6 Gran Coupe. Both
are powered by turbocharged V8 engines
and have over 500bhp -but do they really justify their nearly £100,000
price tags? Watch our video review to find out.
The BMW M6 costs just under £98,000 and features a 4.4-litre twin-turbo V8 with 552bhp and 680Nm of torque. It'll
sprint from 0-60 in just 4.2 seconds before hitting a limited top speed of
The Audi has a 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8
yet despite being down on capacity compared to the BMW it produces the same
bhp and has even more torque with a huge 700Nm. Once again top speed is
limited to 155mph, but it hits 60 in just 3.9 seconds.
So, what's the Audi like to drive? Well, the first thing is that it's so
hard to use the performance on the road - it's just so fast that it's
impossible to put it into use.
The one thing the Audi does have is quattro all-wheel drive and a clever
sport differential - that means it doesn't have any of the traction issues
that you get in the M6, and it doesn't work it's stability control as hard.
There's lots of grip, but the problem is it's just a bit inert - there's
not a lot of feel in the steering.
Also, the suspension is a bit odd. The ride isn't great - in fact it's
pretty awful - and all in all it's not a particularly engaging car despite
its speed. It's quite hard to love this car despite the fact that the
engine is so great.
So how does the BMW compare? If anything the BMW engine has a little bit
more character than the Audi engine and there's certainly more fizz to the
driving experience. It's not perfect and it troubles the traction control
quite a lot on a wet road, though.
The biggest problem for this car in a way, though isn't the Audi - it's the
M6's sister car, the M5. This car is substantially more expensive than the
M5 - about £25,000 more than an M5 - and it doesn't offer a huge amount
more in terms of driving.
So the BMW is the best to drive but it's also the nicest to sit in, with
its stylish interior and sporty wrap-around cockpit. The Audi's still feels
posh and is loaded with gadgets but it lacks the BMW's wow factor. However
with its hatchback boot the Audi is the more practical of the pair.
It might cost a lot more money than the BMW M5 but we'd go for the M6 Gran
Coupe - it looks great, sounds fantastic and most importantly it's more fun
to drive than the Audi RS7.

On this episode of Head 2 Head, Motor Trend's Jonny Lieberman pits the 2013
Volvo S60 T6 AWD R-Design against returning contender, the 2013 Audi S4.
Before hitting the road, the engine placements of both competing sedans are
compared against segment contemporaries such the Cadillac ATS & BMW's 335i.
Why? Because while both competitors are AWD, they start life as FWD. As a
result, both vehicles have unusual engine placements. A mix of limit
testing & canyon carving follows as Jonny provides insight on both cars,
examining everything from driving impressions to interior ergonomics. Does

2008 BMW M3 @ the Track Video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Cu7uy6m4rw0
Given all the praise heaped on the BMW 3 Series over the years, we can't
blame you for thinking there's more to the story. We've heard all the
conspiracy theories, most of them involving checks in large denominations
This might seem believable to a certain segment of the population, but
there's a far less interesting truth behind all those wins: The BMW was the
best car. Sure, certain rivals often upped their game in one area or
another, but the 3 Series always put it all together in a way that made it
So now the 2010 Audi S4 is here to take another shot. It's all-new this
year and the old V8 is gone. There's now a supercharged V6 in its place,
along with a lower price designed to better align the S4 with the BMW 335i.
The BMW 3 Series received a face-lift of its own last year. It was mostly
minor trim changes and the like, but we're told that iDrive thing was
tweaked again, too (oh, lovely).
Sounds like a fair fight, no?

nifty entry in the sport sedan category.
Lamborghini Aventador vs 911 GT2 RS vs Mercedes SLS
If the Lamborghini Aventador can live up to its performance claims, the
691bhp four-wheel drive supercar should easily beat the much cheaper
Porsche 911 GT2 RS and Mercedes SLS. Clearly, the only way to find out is a
drag race. Read the Lamborghini Aventador review at
2011 Volvo S60: Sportiest and Most Dynamic Volvo Ever!
"City Safety" meets "chill city" as Volvo re-invents itself to allow safety
and style to co-exist exceptionally in their latest project. Calm, cool and
collective were my initial thoughts upon driving the all-new Volvo S60
sports sedan. It's a very chill vehicle that looks great while creating
emotional feedback and response. It's calm and confident due to the
standard cadre of technological safety enhancements. A perennial leader in
automotive safety advancements, Volvo is always raising the bar beyond
traditional expectations. Now imagine if every vehicle on the road came
standard with City Safety and Pedestrian Detection. Our kids, family and
friends would be much safer on the roads!
