Can't remember this fella's name...It isn't mine. Even though the owner admitted the car isn't in show stopper condition...yet, he was the ONLY Cougar on the lot at the show. And that's why I like the car. At 42 yrs old, there are some occasional electrical gremlins (not affiliated with AMC) that bedevil the owner. But, we all must persevere through the aggrevation. My Comet certainly has its issues. It's a 351 Windsor, C-6 w/9inch rear. Taken at Abingdon, MD Lowes in September 2011.

Mercury Cougar - American Muscle Car
An excellent TV show featuring the classic Mercury Cougar. They cover all the classic years, and talk about all the different engines and option packages you could get. Only a couple minor mistakes (they say the that XR-7 package included a 4-speed stick, then show an automatic shifter in one... derrr) but overall a very nice overview of these cars.





1969 Mercury Cougar STK 1364
The first generation, third year production, 1969, brought several new additions to the Cougar lineup. A convertible model was now available in either standard and XR-7 trim. These highly anticipated soft tops proved quite popular and today are considered, by many, among the most desirable of the '67-'70 production run. On the exterior, the grille switched from vertical bars to horizontal bars. A new performance package appeared and several disappeared. The 290 hp (216 kW) 351 Windsor V8 was added to the engine lineup. It also featured a blacked-out grille, and a more performance-tuned suspension and handling package. It also came in a variety of vibrant colors like White, Bright Blue Metallic, Competition Orange, and Bright Yellow. Only two Cougars came with the Boss 429 V8, making them the rarest Cougars ever built. Both were factory drag cars built for "Fast Eddie" Schartman & "Dyno" Don Nicholson. Given all that, it should be no surprise that the bright yellow paint on this car is spectacular. Panel gaps are excellent, there's 100% steel in the body. The saddle tan convertible top is virtually new. The heart of a car like this is the engine, and this first year available in the Cougar 351W 2v has proven time and time again to be an extremely durable source of power. producing 290 horses from the factory, it feeds power through the FMX automatic transmission and puts it down via a 9" ford with 3.00 gears. Power steering and power front disc brakes makes driving a breeze. I think Mercury was really hitting on all 8 cylinders in the late '60s in terms of interior design. While the engine's horsepower is relatively modest compared to some earlier muscle cars, there's no disputing the beauty of this car's interior. Those freshly restored saddle buckets are every bit as comfortable as they look. The dashboard features an engine-turned fascia that harkens back to the '30s when all the hottest cars featured this beautifully made finish on their instrument panels. This dash houses a pack of freshly restored gauges that make up a comprehensive package of information, along with the climate controls and AM/FM CD player radio. Overhead there's that new canopy, new carpets and mats are under your feet, and the door panels are excellent units that show Mercury's new luxury orientation for the 1969 Cougar. You know just by looking that all the little pieces are correct and freshly restored from the door handles to the steering wheel to the hide away headlights. If your definition of restoration means a highly accurate, beautifully presented, meticulously crafted car, well, here's your car. This vehicle is located in our Charlotte, NC showroom.
