1999 Saab 9-3 SE Convertible - NO START

After a head gasket replacement, my car will still not start. The timing looks ok (the Exhaust camshaft might be off by one tooth) There seems to be fuel getting to the engine, the battery is good, spark plugs are new. What could be wrong with my car?

Occasionally, the engine will hiccup, but then continue to work properly. The shop could not find any problems, because no faulty codes were stored. At some point, the problem became worse and in one occasion, the tech could only start the car after 20 minutes of trying. The problem was now occurring on a regular basis. They observed that no spark was generated by the special Saab Direct Injection module, and concluded it was defective and needed replacement. Unfortunately, the owner had his car with the replaced module back the next day. It appeared that the problem was not solved. The car was then brought in for a thorough examination. Saab equips their cars with a special Direct Ignition system. The ignition system together with the ignition coils form a single package filled with transformer oil. It is placed directly on the spark plugs, without the need for a distributor nor spark plug cables. The DI system makes a camshaft sensor redundant, but a crankshaft sensor is still used. When an engine has no camshaft sensor, the position of the camshaft is not known during start-up. It is however still possible to let the engine run, by driving the injectors and ignition two at a time as in 1 4 and 2 3. To use sequential injection instead of DIS, adding a camshaft sensor would suffice. Saab however decided to follow a different path. Saab 93 2000MY - strange noise - SOLVED!
Strange noise coming from the engine compartment - starts about 20 secs in - seems to start after when the engine's good and warm but not related to revs. Comes and goes - any ideas? Update 30/11/08. A few weeks after I posted this clip, one of the idler pulleys seized and the drive belt disintegrated at a repair cost, inc recovery, of £250! However, this was NOT the cause of the noise on this clip... the clutch bearing on the AC compressor was found to be worn - this needed a new compressor - £250 if you hunt around - and a further £180 to fit and re-gas. Owning Saabs is apparently not cheap :-)

Extreme turbo Saab + 300 kmh Many viewers have misunderstood this video, so I explain it a little: -Speed at finish line (1mile/1609m) is measured. Time is not measured. -First Saab does 1st and 2nd gear with ~half throttle. Second Saab has limited Boost for 1st and 2nd gear. - three extra seconds between 0-100kmh typically means ~30meters wasted. But three extra seconds used in speeds close to 300kmh, means almost 300meters wasted. Here is equally powerful RWD cars (if not even more HP's) These RWD's are a lot faster between 0-150kmh, but these Saabs are faster from 150kmh-300kmh. You get the point when you compare speeds at finish line. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=urWWdomnncw -A Saab 9-5 driver pushes a little too much throttle @3rd gear and looses traction. He lifts a throttle and pushes it back, but too much again and then he gears up 4th, a bit earlier than planned. (optimal is@205kmh). Earlier that summer I broke one gearbox when pushing too hard on 3rd gear. With new gearbox and at later event, I drove very gently on first three gears to avoid breaking it again. I pushed WOT for the first time on 4th gear @ 190kmh. You can hear it clearly on following video. Engine tone changes totally around 200kmh. Incar video is from 299kmh pull (at 1 mile race) Something happened to camera during the run. So I didn't get any incar video from a 305kmh pull.
