On this episode of Ignition, Carlos Lago gets behind the wheel of the newest iteration of Porsche's Cayman line, the 2014 Porsche Cayman S. After some twisty road driving, Carlos meets up with pro driver Randy Pobst at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca to discuss the capabilities of the new Cayman on the track. It's track ready, balanced, and can go from 0-60 in 4.2 seconds... but is it worth it's fully loaded six figure price tag? First previewed on its Boxster platform-mate, and shown at last year's Los Angeles Auto Show, the new Cayman looks more aggressive than its predecessor. From the 918 Spyder-aping looks to the scalloped air intakes on the doors to the silicone-injected hips, the car looks buffer. It's larger, too. The wheelbase has been stretched by 2.4 inches, while the overhangs on either end have been shortened by 10mm. Overall length is only up 0.1 inch. The track has been widened 40/12mm front/rear. Porsche Macan Turbo vs Cayman GTS - is the SUV a sports car on stilts?

The cars couldn't be more different - the Macan a sports SUV, whereas the Cayman GTS is a more powerful version of the Cayman S. They both cost under £60,000, but how different are they on track? The Cayman GTS has 340bhp and 380NM of torque. It'll hit 60mph in 4.6 seconds and weighs just 1,345kg. When it comes to price, it's going to set you back just over £55,000. The Macan turbo has 400bhp and 550NM of torque, but it tips the scales at 1,925kg and will cost you just over £59,000, but it'll still hit 60mph in just 4.8 seconds. The Cayman GTS is an absolute delight to drive around a circuit and set an impressive lap time of 1:10.5 seconds. That's 1.2 seconds faster than a Cayman S. How does the Macan turbo compare? The end result wasn't much of a surprise - the Cayman showed a clean pair of heels to the Macan around the test track, but there's more to these cars than racing against a stopwatch. The Cayman GTS is simply one of the finest cars I've ever driven on a circuit. It's beautifully balanced and an absolute joy to drive. The Macan isn't as at its best when it's chasing a lap time, but it's got lots of grip and a very smooth, powerful and refined engine, and it's one of the best sports SUVs you can buy. So, in our minds, both of these Porsches are winners.

The plug-in hybrid, mid-engine hypercar: The Porsche 918 Spyder. Tested by /DRIVE's Chris Harris at the Valencia circuit in the winter of 2013. The Porsche 918 Spyder has come a long way since when we first saw it at the Geneva Motor Show in March 2010. Competing against the Ferrari LaFerrari and McLaren P1, it is the cheapest of the trio of new hypercars at a base price of $845,000. The engine weights 140 kg according to Porsche and it delivers 608 horsepower (453 kW) at 8,500 rpm and 528 N·m (389 lbf·ft) of maximum torque. This is supplemented by two electric motors delivering an additional 279 hp (208 kW) - One 154 hp electric motor drives the rear wheels in parallel with the engine and also serves as the main generator.

The new Porsche Cayman and Boxster GTS cost around £6,000 more than the S models, and come with unique front bumpers, plus a 15bhp upgrade to their 3.4-litre engines. This now provides the Boxster with 330bhp, and the Cayman with 340bhp. The GTS models also feature the Porsche sports Exhaust as standard - a £1,530 option on the S - which gives the flat-six engine a more aggressive note. Both models also get Alcantara and leather trim on the dash, which on the S model comes at a premium of £1,740. However, Porsche also gives both models a lot of unnecessary features, such as smoked rear-light clusters, directional headlamp beams and 20-inch alloy wheels - which you'll eventually end up clattering on a kerb. Both the Porsche Cayman and Boxster GTS come with the Sport Chrono Package which includes launch control and active engine mounts. While nice in terms of technology and to pretend you're one of the Porsche's race drivers, it's difficult to justify and discern these additional features when out on the open road. To conclude, you'd only need to spend £4,000 to get all of the right options on your Porsche Boxster or Cayman S. Effectively, you're paying an extra £2,000 for some new bumpers, the history attached to the GTS badge and an extra 15bhp, which you can't really feel out on the open road. It would be better to spend £2,000 on Porsche's excellent PDK paddleshift gearbox, so the premium for the GTS isn't really worth it.
