Cadillac Returns To Racing With CTS-V Coupe
Two teams set to compete in SCCA World Challenge GT Series
* Racecar based on award-winning CTS-V Series line
* Program designed to validate, enhance Cadillac performance
* Andy Pilgrim, Johnny O'Connell signed as Cadillac drivers
DETROIT -- Cadillac announced today it will return to racing in 2011 with a race-prepared version of its CTS-V Coupe competing in the Sports Car Club of America World Challenge, North America's top production-based racecar series.
The move returns Cadillac to a series where it competed from 2004 to 2007. Competing in the GT Class with the CTS-V Sport Sedan, Cadillac captured the Manufacturer's Championship in 2005 and 2007 and the Driver's Championship in 2005.
Cadillac will field two teams in the upcoming SCCA World Challenge GT Class with a racecar based on the CTS-V Coupe. The CTS-V line, which also includes the CTS-V Sedan and CTS-V Wagon, was recently named to Car and Driver magazine's 10 Best list for 2011.
"Returning to racing in the SCCA World Challenge is a great way to demonstrate the performance and capability of the CTS-V Coupe," said Don Butler, vice president for Cadillac marketing. "The racecars in this series are production based, which allows us to validate our performance against the best of our competitors on the track, and not just the showroom."
Cadillac is working with Pratt & Miller, a New Hudson, Mich., engineering firm which specializes in motorsports, to develop the CTS-V Coupe racecar. While some of the production CTS-V components will be modified due to the unique demands of racing or to meet the SCCA series' technical rules, every effort is taken to maintain as much production content as possible.
"The SCCA World Challenge lends itself well to a natural transfer of knowledge," said Jim Campbell, GM vice president for Performance Vehicles and Motorsports. "The series will become a key test-bed for Cadillac. We anticipate using what we learn on the racetrack to ensure the V-Series stays on the cutting-edge of performance."
The first event in the SCCA World Challenge is March 25-27 in St. Petersburg, Fla. Johnny O'Connell, a three-time GT1 champion in the America Le Mans Series, and Andy Pilgrim, who won the 2005 SCCA World Challenge GT class in a Cadillac, will be behind the wheel of the CTS-V racecars.
Introduced for the 2003 model year, the CTS-V has quickly earned a reputation among luxury sports car buyers. For the 2011 model year, Cadillac added the CTS-V Coupe and the CTS-V Sport Wagon to the CTS-V Sport Sedan, creating an impressive family of performance vehicles. The CTS-Vs feature Brembo brakes, a supercharged 6.2L V8 delivering 556 horsepower and a Magnetic Ride Control suspension system that can read and react to the road 1,000 times a second.
Started in 1944, the SCCA organizes and supports racing at all levels from amateur to professional. The World Challenge series is designed to provide teams, manufacturers and aftermarket suppliers a competitive production-based race series in which to prove their products. The races follow a 50-minute maximum time limit, with the number of laps and total distance determined by track configuration, lap times and race conditions.

· Pilgrim Holds Off Porsche for Podium Finish
· Detroit Up Next on World Challenge Series Schedule
MONTEREY, Calif. -- Andy Pilgrim had to keep track of a lot of information in the closing laps of Friday's Cadillac Sports Car Grand Prix at Laguna Seca Raceway.
Chief among them was the position of one Lawson Aschenbach.
Aschenbach, who had to start 15th in the field because he missed qualifying, rocketed through the field to fourth place late in the 50-minute Pirelli World Challenge Series event on the 2.238-mile layout, and had he passed Pilgrim in the final four laps, he would have wrested the Manufacturer's point lead from Team Cadillac.
He didn't, and Pilgrim hung on to finish third in his No. 8 Cadillac CTS-V Coupe, keeping Cadillac's lead intact and cutting the distance to the driver point lead to just 14 points.
"Manufacturer points is all we care about," an enthused Pilgrim said on the podium after the race.
Pilgrim had a couple of chances to put a car between himself and Aschenbach, but missed by inches on both. The Volvos of race winner Randy Pobst and second-place Alex Figge were just too stout off the corners to get it done.
"It was an elastic band effect with Volvo," Pilgrim said. "They were slow going into the corners and rockets coming out. I had the best shot on restarts, to try and get Alex. He was very clean; we were bumping, but it was clean. He gave me room and I gave him room. But once I got to the end of the corner, they took off. "
Having that buffer between himself and Aschenbach was tops in his mind.
"I tried, really, because I wanted to put him [Figge] between me and Lawson," Pilgrim said. "Having Lawson behind me, holy smoke...I had to just be perfect for those four or five laps at the end. Luckily, we were. It just really kept me focused. Lawson raced me fair and really close."
Pilgrim said he had an advantage on Aschenbach under braking with his Brembo brake system.
"The brakes on our car made it for us. He didn't make anything on us on brakes."
Pobst ran away with the victory, crossing the line .699 seconds ahead of his teammate, Figge. Pilgrim was third, 1.58 seconds back, and Aschenbach came home fourth, 1.711 seconds behind.
Johnny O'Connell had rough going in the No. 3 Cadillac CTS-V Coupe, starting seventh and finishing there. He was carrying 196 pounds of sanctioning-body-mandated weight, and had a struggle to stay with the lead group.
O'Connell, a master of the restart, had a couple of chances on late restarts to improve his position, but couldn't close the deal before Turn 3.
Despite the extra weight he carried, O'Connell was pleased with the day.
"Restarts were good today," he said. "The guys did an amazing job; the race car was the best car I had all weekend. But that much weight was murder here. Not just in the momentum I had to carry up the hill, but in the way my car was handling. You want to win, but you're glad that Andy had a really good run in third. It was a good event for Cadillac."
After Pobst, Figge, Pilgrim and Aschenbach came the Porsche of Steve Ott to round out the top five. Mike Skeen came from 16th to finish sixth, followed by O'Connell and the Porsches of Justin Marks, Tomy Drissi and Bret Curtis.
O'Connell still leads the driver points by 14, 573-559, over Pilgrim, with Pobst now third at 502. James Sofronas, who was third coming in, retired midway through Friday's race and finished 15th in GT. Aschenbach is fourth at 427.
In the Manufacturer's race, Cadillac doubled its lead from Utah and stands four points higher than Porsche, 37-33, after five races. Volvo leaped into the battle in third place, with 25 points.
Next race for Team Cadillac is on home turf June 1-3 at the Cadillac Detroit Grand Prix on the Belle Isle course in the middle of the Detroit River.
Friday's Cadillac Sports Car Grand Prix of Monterey is set for broadcast May 27 at 11 p.m. EDT on the NBC Sports Network.
View live streaming on the day of the races and continuously on demand after races.

Cadillac CTS-V Coupe Hits the Track
2011-01-19
Sebring, Fla. -- The Cadillac CTS-V Coupe race car hit the track for the first time on Jan. 17, driven by Johnny O'Connell and Andy Pilgrim, for tests at Sebring International Raceway in Sebring, Fla.
Cadillac is reentering the Sports Car Club of America World Challenge GT series this year, beginning with the season-opening race in St. Petersburg, Fla., on March 25-27. Cadillac competed in the World Challenge series in 2004-2007, earning the Speed GT Manufacturer's Championship in both 2005 and 2007 with CTS-V Sedan race cars.

Cadillac Racing with CTS-V Coupe testing at Sebring
Cadillac is turning their attention to racing as the company has just wrapped up testing of the new CTS-V Racing Coupe.
Set to enter competition on Saturday, at the Streets of St. Petersburg, the CTS will battle other contenders in the highly-competitive Sports Car Club of America World Challenge GT series. It will be driven by Johnny O'Connell and Andy Pilgrim, who are no strangers to racing as O'Connell is a three-time GT1 champion in the America Le Mans Series and Pilgrim claimed victory in the 2005 SCCA World Challenge GT class.
As for the car itself, it features an aerodynamic carbon fiber body and a supercharged 6.2-liter V8 engine that develops 535 hp (399 kW / 542 PS). While this is 21 hp (16 kW / 21 PS) less than the standard CTS-V Coupe, the car weighs 1,000 pounds (454 kg) less than the production model.
According to O'Connell, "The CTS-V Coupe racecar has been very nimble during testing and seems to brake very well. I not only expect it to do well on a street circuit, but everywhere we compete."
Cadillac CTS-V World Challenge Rips Up Detroit GP - SHAKEDOWN
Leo Parente and ShakeDown visit the Cadillac Racing SCCA World Challenge
team as they take on the Detroit GP. CTS-V did its own work on the Belle Isle track ripping up the world-class competition [not the track, like IndyCar did] winning both WC races. As the event was held in the backyard of GM Headquarters, a few Cadillac engineers / execs [and the Pratt & Miller team] provided us the opportunity to explore exactly how Cadillac bridges the connection between racecar and road car - Technology, Process, and Passion make the trip.
And thanks, Cadillac Racing video team, for the on-board footage.
