The German automaker’s performance division takes regular luxury sedans, shoves massive engines into them, adds some design tweaks, then sets these monsters loose to destroy tires. Unfortunately, the naturally aspirated 6.2 V8 found in this AMG is now phased out, with newer models boasting smaller turbocharged powerplants. Regardless of how good those new engines are, driving an old fashioned AMG demonstrates the statement “there's no replacement for displacement” With the AMG development package, this car makes 481 hp and 443 lb-ft of torque. Runs to 60 can be accomplished in a little under 4 seconds up to the raised limit of 174 mph. The C63 is a little on the heavy side, weighing in at essentially 2 tons. Clearly the C63 we are testing has some modifications. This Benz is sitting on accuair suspension. What that means is full adjustability of damping, stiffness and of course ride height. So you can slam it curbside, take it to the track and ride comfortably on the highway. The compressor is housed within the trunk, and you can even adjust your ride height use a phone app. Just look at this thing. Especially with blacked out forgestars, a chrome blue wrap, and a carbon splitter, diffuser and wing. Menacing. It helps that it's lower than the academic standards at a third rate university. But the best part of this C63 is the Exhaust. The stock C63 sounds good, but honestly it’s a little quiet for my taste. This is anything but. The system on this car is extensive, including custom long tube headers, no cats, no resonator and an agency power valvetronic Exhaust system. Which has now been permanently set to loud mode. It pops, cracks, backfires and sounds absolutely insane on overrun. Enjoying this soundtrack is a simple two step process, downshift and experience full throttle terror. The car has its shortcomings. The transmission seems to take its sweet time with shifts and sometimes clicking the paddles result in nothing at all. It is a seven speed unit but utilizes a conventional torque converter. Double shifts are simply rejected by the car, you must wait for the car to engage the first shift, before commanding another.The rear legroom is also really bad, bad enough that we frequently joke thats its a four door, two seat car. But it is certainly better than nothing. As a natural consequence of the suspension modifications, this car also sits very low, and combined with the the carbon front splitter and rear diffuser, makes approaching steep inclines rather perilous. The accuair setup must be adjusted correctly, otherwise you can get scraping, or other weird noises. With the Exhaust and a Weistec Naturally aspirated stage 2 tune, evosport lightweight crank pulley, weistec air filter and black series intake there is a rumor that the car is just as fast as a lamborghini gallardo. We of course can't confirm this as we obviously haven't tried 10 or so times. Not sure about current power output, suffice to say, it should be close to 500 whp, and when this car hooks up, its quick. And when you want to misbehave, smoky, rubber melting burnouts ridiculously easy. Interestingly the car does not feel as fast as it is. A combination of the transmission and chassis somehow turn 500hp into something that feels manageable and not overwhelming. My butt Dyno says it feels slower, but the real Dyno begs to differ. Handling wise, this C63 isn't something that promotes finesse, its something you manhandle through the corners, with a healthy application of throttle. The air ride suspension is surprisingly composed, not allowing any of the undignified wallowing or body roll traditionally associated with cars on bags. For a car that started life based off of a lowly C class, this particular vehicle has been turned into an absolute monster. It snaps necks, ruptures eardrums and puts a massive smile on your face. From a fun factor perspective, this is one of the best cars I’ve driven, and it looks epic.
