VW Scirocco R Cup CNG
Looking for performance as well as economy? We drive the biofuel powered VW Scirocco R Cup CNG race car. The VW Scirocco R Cup eco-racer is designed to prove that a biofuel or compressed natural gas in this case, is a viable fuel source for exciting, high performance cars. Forming the grid of a one make race series, the track focused R Cup, developed entirely from the Scirocco R road car, is actually one of the most eco friendly cars Volkswagen produce. Under the bonnet the standard 2.0 TSI engine remains, as does the slick DSG gearbox but the reality is the CNG fuel source produces 80% less carbon emissions. Stiffenend, lightened and prepared for track the Scirocco R Cup car replaces the original fuel tank in favour of a compressed gas tank in which to store the low emission, compressed natural biogas. Although the 222bhp Cup car is 39bhp down on power compared to the road car, the inclusion of a 'press to pass' button allows drivers to call upon an extra 49bhp from the engine, in an attempt to make the racing more exciting for competitors and spectators alike. So, is a hot hatch powered by compressed natural gas still a hot hatch? Watch the video to find out. Volkswagen Polo R WRC testing begins
Volkswagen has begun testing the 2013 Polo R WRC rally racer. The first test kilometers were driven by Dr. Ulrich Hackenberg, member of the VW board of management for technology, along with a two-time World Rally Champion, the Spaniard Carlos Sainz. An initial test run of around 100 kilometers took place in the vineyards of Veldenz near Trier in Germany, on the same 2.8 km tarmac circuit used for the ADAC Rallye Deutschland. VW Motorsport plans on entering WRC racing in the 2013 season. Says Volkswagen Motorsport Director Kris Nissen: "Next year we'll be running an extensive testing programme on tarmac, gravel, mud and snow in order to prepare ourselves for the 2013 season as best we can." The Polo R WRC features a 1.6-liter TSI engine that develops approximately 300 PS (221 kW / 296 hp). The car is also equipped with an all-wheel drive system. The video below was released last May when VW announced the Polo R WRC.
