Mercedes Silver Arrow W165
Chassis 449547 was the second of the two W165s completed for the 1939
Tripoli Grand Prix. It was considered the slower of the two cars and Lang
was sent out in it with an unfavourable strategy. He nevertheless dominated
the race and if he had wanted, he could have lapped his 'team leader' in
the closing stages. As mentioned the car was only tested and demonstrated
after its debut victory. It remained dormant for over fifty years and is
still only very rarely seen outside of Stuttgart. Celebrating the 75th
anniversary of the 'Silver Arrows,' it is seen here at one of those rare
outings, during the 2009 Retromobile in Paris.
Auto Union Type C
Mercedes-Benz domination in Grand Prix ended with the Auto Union Typ C. It
took a few years to get it right, but Ferdinand Porsche's daring design
with a mid-mounted V16 finally won. It claimed many victories from 1936 to
1938 until the three-liter formula was laid out for 1939.
Horch, Audi, DKW and Wanderer created Auto Union with the help of Ferdinand
Porsche and Adolf Rosenberger. Along with building passenger cars, a goal
of the new company was to enter Grand Prix. They did so in 1934 with a
daring mid-engined race car called the Typ A. This evolved into the
slightly larger Typ B the following year and the Typ C was fitted with a
much larger engine for 1936.
The Type-C was a third evolution of Auto Union's racecar. It primarily
competed with Mercedes-Benz but also raced against Alfa Romeo's 12C-36, the
Maserati V8RI and Bugatti 59/50. Type-Cs won six victories in 1936 and made

I recorded this beautiful blue Bugatti Type 35 B during Concours d'Elegance
Antwerp. It was the most successful of the Bugatti racing models. The Type
35B featured a roots type Supercharger.
The final version of the Type 35 series was the Type 35B of 1927.
Originally named Type 35TC, it shared the 2.3 L engine of the Type 35T but
added a large Supercharger like the Type
35C. Output is 175 hp (126 kW) with upgraded compressor and 45 examples
were made. A Type 35B won the 1929 French Grand Prix.

MERCEDES-BENZ W154: Der Höhenstraßen-Sieger
Dieser W154 mit Chassis-Nummer 11 ist jenes Auto, mit dem Rudolf Caracciola
1939 Rekorde fuhr, Hermann Lang auf der Wiener Höhenstraße siegte, und
Juan Manuel Fangio 1951 in Buenos Aires Dritter wurde.
Der 3-Liter V-12 Zylinder mit vier obenliegenden Nockenwellen besaß zwei
Roots-Gebläse mit Stahlrotoren in einem Magnesium-Gehäuse, sie liefen mit
1,5facher Kurbelwellen-Drehzahl und beanspruchten bei 8000 Touren 160 PS
der Höchstleistung. 1939 wurde der W154 modifiziert. Das Trockengewicht
sank von 975 auf 898 kg, mittels Zweistufen-Gebläse wurde die Leistung auf
480 PS getrieben. Der Spritverbrauch lag im Rennen zwischen 120 bis und 145
Liter pro 100 Kilometer, das benötigte Tankvolumen von 400 Liter wurde in
einem Satteltank vor dem Cockpit und einem Hecktank aufgeteilt. Von 16
Rennen gewann der W154 in den Jahren 1938/39 elf.

GTROC (www.gtroc.org) during the GTROC Japan Tour 2012.
The TRUST company was so kind to invite the GTROC to come and visit the
TRUST facility and have a first hand look at the unbelievable GTR 35RX
Just a few days after we stood around the car at the Tokyo Auto Salon we
had this great opportunity to watch the car exclusively...but not only were
we allowed to watch at every detail, no we were even invited to take a seat
in the ultra tight race seat and hit the throttle of that monster.
