Arctic Trucks International (www.arctictrucks.com) announced today that a new world record of the fastest overland journey to the South Pole has been officially recognized by Guinness World Records. In December 2010 two Arctic Trucks vehicles crossed 2308km of the Antarctica High Plateau from Novolazarevskaya station (Novo) to the South Pole in 108 hours (4.5 days). The purpose-built AT Expedition vehicles, based around a Toyota Hilux platform, traveled at an average speed to South Pole of 21.4km/h and average fuel efficiency of 2.2km/per liter, with only a single refueling stop on the way. An unofficial improvement on the record itself was achieved for the return journey, which was faster still at only 3.5 days, averaging 27.5km/h. No comparable speed or fuel efficiency has ever been recorded for high plateau expeditions in Antarctica. Arctic Trucks built vehicles have now clocked over eighty thousand kilometers on the plateau, proving new benchmarks for speed, range, reliability and fuel efficiency for overland travel in this area. The two Arctic Trucks vehicles used for this round trip were both Arctic Trucks Expedition AT44 models. Arctic Trucks designs and builds these vehicles based around the Toyota Hilux 3.0 liter turbo diesel. Race to the South Pole (Terra Nova Expedition) - Tragedy at the South Pole (Antarctica)
The Terra Nova Expedition, officially the British Antarctic Expedition, was led by Robert Falcon Scott with the objectives of scientific research (meteorological, geological, geographical and zoological) and also of being the first to reach the South Pole. Scott and four companions attained the pole on 17 January 1912, where they found that a Norwegian team led by Roald Amundsen had preceded them by 34 days. Scott's entire party died on the return journey from the pole; some of their bodies, journals, and photographs were discovered by a search party eight months later. Scott was an experienced polar commander, having previously led the Discovery Expedition to the Antarctic in 1901–04. The Terra Nova Expedition, named after its supply ship, was a private venture, financed by public contributions augmented by a government grant. It had further backing from the Admiralty, which released experienced seamen to the expedition, and from the Royal Geographical Society. As well as its polar attempt, the expedition carried out a comprehensive scientific programme, and explored Victoria Land and the Western Mountains. An attempted landing and exploration of King Edward VII Land was unsuccessful. A journey to Cape Crozier in June and July 1911 was the first extended sledging journey in the depths of the Antarctic winter. For many years after his death, Scott's status as tragic hero was unchallenged, and few questions were asked about the causes of the disaster which overcame his polar party. In the final quarter of the 20th century the expedition came under closer scrutiny, and more critical views were expressed about its organization and management. The degree of Scott's personal culpability remains a matter of controversy among commentators. After leaving news of Amundsen's arrival at Cape Evans, Campbell's Eastern party became the "Northern Party". On 9 February 1911 they sailed northwards, arriving at Robertson Bay, near Cape Adare on 17 February, where they built a hut close to Norwegian explorer Carstens Borchgrevink's old quarters. The Northern Party spent the 1911 winter in their hut. Their exploration plans for the summer of 1911–12 could not be fully carried out, partly due to the condition of the sea ice and also through their inability to discover a route into the interior. Terra Nova returned from New Zealand on 4 January 1912, and transferred the party to the vicinity of Evans Coves, a location approximately 250 miles (400 km) south of Cape Adare and documentary, science documentary, scientific documentary, watch documentary, documentary 2015, watch documentary 2015, top documentaries, free documentaries, topdocumentariesfilms, documentarys heaven, best documentaries 2015 documentary film 2015, documentary center, documentary national geographic, documentary history channel, documentary history channel 2015, documentary history channel hd, documentary discovery, documentary discovery channel, documentary serial killers documentary channel, documentary hd, HD documentary, full documentary, ufo documentary, documentary films, feature documentary, documentary history, documentary history channel, documentary national geographic, full documentary hd, documentaries, HD documentaries, mark zuckerberg documentary, hd documentary 1080p, kepler documentary 2014, documentary hd 1080p, future of energy documentary, best documentary, life documentary, earth documentary, best documentary, documentaries, bbc documentary, bbc documentaries, documentary channel, documentary free, documentary tv channel, documentary videos, documentary films channel, documentary heaven,
