You don't have to buy a hybrid to get good fuel economy. For enthusiasts who want to tread lighter, VW offers up the Jetta TDI. Like all modern diesel engines it's clean, quiet and efficient. Tom Voelk takes a look at this different way to go green.
2010 Volkswagen Jetta TDI Review, Walkaround, Exhaust, Test Drive
Apparently, Volkswagen was listening when driving enthusiasts asked for a
vehicle that could effectively blend high MPG numbers with a high fun
factor. If your primary driving consist mostly of highway drives, make sure
you check out any current Audi/Volkswagen product with their phenomenal TDI
motor. If you're commute consist primary of sitting in stop and go traffic,
a hybrid may suit you better.
2012 Volkswagen Jetta TDI Vs. 2012 Toyota Prius
The Ultimate Commuter Car Shootout.
Fuel economy numbers are often little more than a lie printed on a piece of
paper and stuck to a car's window. That said, they can be terribly
misleading in the hunt for a fuel-efficient commuter car.
Whether you're motivated by ambition to save the environment or the simple
desire to visit the gas pump less often, two hypermiling machines stand out
above the rest, and not just for their impressive fuel economy claims
either, but because unlike nearly every other car on the market, they
exceed the already impressive EPA rated figures. These two cars are the
Volkswagen Jetta TDI and the Toyota Prius.

2012 Volkswagen Jetta TDI Car Video Review
http://www.autobytel.com/volkswagen/jetta/2012/ The sixth generation
Volkswagen Jetta debuted last year as a 2011 model and with an all new
model came an all new TDI version of the car. The 2012 Volkswagen Jetta turbo Diesel gets 45 MPG on the highway and
30 MPG in the city. With an MSRP of $22,775; the TDI is a great value. This
car looks and feels expensive, yet represents one of the most economical
cars you can drive.
The 2012 Volkswagen Jetta TDI rivals the Toyota Prius Hybrid but has the
fun to drive factor in its corner. The Jetta TDI can be purchased with a
6-speed manual transmission that adds to the driving experience. On the
outside the 2012 Volkswagen Jetta TDI oozes with style. The look is upscale
and very premium and that is no doubt due to the fact that VW also controls
the Audi brand. The Jetta TDI drives better than the other cars in its
segment too. On the inside the seats are comfortable and supportive with
the ergonomics of the interior being spot on also. This is German
engineering in a very affordable and economical sedan. And even thought the
Jetta is a compact sedan, the passengers in the rear are comfortable.
The 2012 Volkswagen Jetta TDI will save you about $450 per year by buying
the TDI version over the regular gasoline version. The base price is more
expensive but if you own the car for more than 4 years that price will be
made up in fuel economy savings; plus the TDI models have better resale
value. The heart and soul of the Jetta TDI is 2.0 liter 4-cylinder turbo diesel engine that produces 140 horsepower and 236 lb-ft. of
torque. It's the high amount of torque that makes for great off the line
The bottom line of the 2012 Volkswagen Jetta TDI is that it is all grown
up, looks more sophisticated, is very stylish, and for the money gives you
fuel economy and driving pleasure unmatched by any car in the segment.

The minivan is without question the Swiss Army knife of the automotive
world. Toyota feels the 3rd generation Sienna can buck the downward sales
trend in this category. There's wide screen entertainment and LA-Z-BOY
seating. And aiming right at the Honda Odyssey is the SE version with a
sport tuned suspension. Really. Car guy Tom Voelk checks it out at the
San Francisco press launch.

Buyers have always been willing to pay a premium for Volkwagen's Jetta
because of it's solid German feel. Now VW has substantially dropped the
MSRP of the new 2011 model putting it's price on par with Civic and
Corolla. Does it still have that great Teutonic feel? Tom Voelk travels to
the global press introduction in San Francisco to find out.
