This week we have done our mandatory Autobahn-Test with a 2012 Audi A3 hatch equipped with the 1.4 TFSI (125 hp) and 6-speed manual transmission. Why you always have to pay attention on the Autobahn (see description)
This white van driver wanted to go directly from the Autobahn entrance to
the left lane without looking into the side mirror at first. I flashed him
and at the last moment he changed his mind.
A personal remark to all the smart-asses out there: Yes, I'm driving fast
in the video but it's perfectly legal, because at that point there is NO
speed limit. German Autobahn is without a general speed limit. And yes,
that was a crititical situation - which was defused by me. Nothing
happened. Nothing at all.
But for those, who like to bitch about me being too fast and speed being a
killer anyway, here are some statistical numbers. Source of the numbers is
- In 2011, 31 % of all traffic in Germany went on Autobahns. Yet only 6.4 %
of all accidents happened there and only 11.3 % of deaths on the road
- Of those 11.3 % of all dead people in Germany, 47.1 % were truck and van
drivers. Only 14.2 % were car drivers. Should tell you something about
who's driving worst here.
- In contrast to that, 60.9 % of all fatal accidents in Germany happened on
country roads, where a general speed limit of 100 km/h exists.
In conclusion, the Autobahn, thanks to good maintenance and an in general
good behaviour of traffic participants, is one of the safest roads in the
world - despite the lack of a general speed limit.
The average speed on the Autobahn is about 120 km/h, which makes a speed
limit unncessary anyway. All demands for introducing a speed limit so far
failed at the attempt, because there is absolutely no rational reason to
If you want to know my opinion: It is legal to drive fast on the Autobahn.
If certain people can't deal with that, feel unsafe or insecure because of
that, they are unfit for using the Autobahn in my book.

The 1.8 TFSI -- with an engine displacement of 1,798 cc -- produces 132 kW
(180 hp) and outputs 250 Nm (184.39 lb-ft) of torque between 1,250 and
5,000 rpm. It combines direct injection with supplemental injection into
the induction pipe, varies the valve stroke based on load using the Audi
valvelift system and utilizes a very elaborate thermal management system to
quickly heat the engine after a cold start. Its key performance data: zero
to 100 km/h (62.14 mph) in 7.2 seconds, top speed 232 km/h (144.16 mph),
combined fuel consumption of 5.6 liters per 100 km (42.00 US mpg),
equivalent to 130 g CO2 per km (209.21 g/mile).

Euro NCAP | Audi A3 | 2012 | ESC test
Euro NCAP carried out sine-with-dwell tests according to the ESC GTR global
technical regulation, which is based on the US regulation FMVSS126. The
testwere completed on all cars whose results were released in 2009. For
cars that allowed the ESC system to be switched off, tests were carried out
with ESC ON and OFF. Cars were tested by undergoing multiple runs,
sometimes as much as 60 per car, each time increasing the steering angle
and input. The clip shows the first ESC off test where the car span out.
The ESC on test is the one with the same steering input.
