1974 Ford "Get a Horse!" TV Comm. for Mustang, Pinto, and Maverick
In this 1974 television commercial for the Ford Maverick, Mustang, and Pinto, turnabout is apparently fair play. When the automobile was first introduced at the turn of the 20th century, stranded drivers standing near their broken-down cars would often be taunted with shouts of "get a horse!" by passersby. Now the Ford Motor Company uses the same phrase as the tagline in this advertising campaign, which also extended to radio and newspapers, to promote its equine-inspired model names with an image of endurance, reliability, and American swagger. As a steel guitar plays underneath, the copy refers directly to the general anxiety over the 1973 - 1974 gasoline shortage and touts 20 miles-per-gallon fuel economy as "that ain't hay." This commercial was excerpted from a newscast on WTIC-TV (now WFSB), Channel 3 in Hartford, Connecticut, to make it easier to locate by keywords. 1973 Maverick Grabber 332 Stroker first test drive
This is the first test drive of an 8 month build. It's a very clean 1973 Maverick Grabber that has been converted to a top loader 4 speed. The engine is a 332 Scat Stroker, with Dart Aluminum heads, roller cam, MSD, etc. During the build we also installed an SSBC 4 wheel disc brake conversion. My wife was trying to film the "maiden voyage" and the camcorder batteries went dead. She was relegated to the front porch using the AC adapter. We will get it out on the road for more footage soon....
