2004 Corvette Z06
Just your run-o-the-mill badass Z06 roadster.
The C5 Corvette was literally built differently than all GM products
leading up to 1997.
0.29 drag in the wind tunnel.
D.I.C. which could read diagnostic codes and display them for the driver
without a computer.
Constructing the frame rails with a process called Hydroforming. Replacing
14 parts used in the structural integrity of the C4 helping reducing the
C5's weight by 68 pounds. Hydroforming also alleviated the tall frame rails
for the C5 making it less of a chore to enter and exit then the C4. You had
to carefully step over the frame so you wouldn't scrape the interior carpet
with your shoes or worse stiletto heals. I thought it was unique and missed
it in the C5.
Third-generation LS1 V8 was overhauled to an all-aluminum block, utilizing
ignition coils replacing the distributor of all previous small-block
engines and new cylinder firing order. Rated at 345 bhp and 350 lbs. ft.
With 28 mpg highway mileage it avoided the gas guzzler tax.
Another trend set by Corvette was Run Flats Tires became standard equipment
The most important of all refinements was the transmission being moved to
the rear of the car right between the wheels aptly named trans-axle. Of
course the significance of this was Corvette now had a more even
distribution weight to the tune of 51% in front 48% in back. This may not
seem like a big deal now but in 1997 as a gearhead or an American auto
enthusiast you knew what they meant for the C5...Poising GM to enter and
compete in the Super Car market.
My personal favorite accommodation was the introduction of the Fixed Roof
Coupe for 1999.
There was a rumor back in the day that Chevy was entertaining the idea of
offering a striped down model of the Corvette allegedly nicknaming it The
Poor Man's Corvette. This was how the Fixed Roof Coupe would fit into the
future stable of Corvettes. To be honest this wasn't such a bad idea as far
as my circle of fiends were concerned, a no frills V8 Muscle Car would have
been a welcomed turnaround for the American automotive enthusiast...It may
have even made a Corvette buyer out of them.
But, it didn't happen.
What did happen was in 2001 Chevrolet used the Fix Roof Coupe body style
too debut the most impressive Vehicle GM ever envisioned...2004 Corvette
Z06 with the heart stopping LS6 hammering out 385 bhp and 385 lb·ft.
The FE4 suspension calibrated toward high speed operation was developed for
Z06 and not available on other Corvette models.
2004 Corvette Z06 boasted 405 horsepower. However,
dynamometer tests have shown that GM underrated the LS6 by 20 horsepower giving it a total
of 425 asphalt splitting horsepower and a missile
screaming 412 foot pounds of torque. 1.90 second from 0 to 60 mph. This
3,074 pound badass can shear through the quarter mile in 11.97 second, bone
stock at 118.80 mph.

2015 Chevrolet Corvette Z06 on Desert Run
A quick blast in the 2015 Chevrolet Corvette Z06 down an open road in the
high desert. (Note: It's not really called "Parole Red" but that would be
an appropriate name for the paint color.)
Corvette C5 Z06 0-60 mph
Trying to beat the factory 0-60 time of 3.9 seconds in my 2002 Z06. Don't
think I got it, maybe I'll try again without bogging the launch or being
slow and early on the 1-2. Sorry for the shaky camera, people are right
when they say how tricky it is to drive, shift, steer, and hold a camera
without killing themselves.
