However, when car buffs dismiss the only American luxury brand left, they fail to see Cadillac's march forward. 2002 brought the first RWD Cadillac since the Fleetwoood. A year later the XLR roadster hit, followed in 2004 by Cadillac's first 5-Series fighter, the STS. Not everything was rosy. The original CTS drove like a BMW but lacked charm and luxury fittings. The XLR was based on a Corvette, which made for excellent road manners, but the Northstar engine didn't have the oomph. The STS sounded like a good idea, but the half-step CTS wasn't much smaller and ultimately shoppers weren't interested in a bargain option. That brings us to the new ATS and CTS. Ditching the "more car for less money" mantra, the ATS has been created to fight the C/3/IS leaving the CTS free to battle the E/5/GS head-on. Can Caddy's sensible new strategy deliver the one-two punch fans have hoped for? I snagged a CTS 2.0T for a week to find out. I found the outgoing CTS a little discordant, but 2014 brings an elegant more aggressive refresh. GM's Art and Science theme has matured from "cubism gone wrong" to shapes that flow and jibe with a larger grille and softer creases. The 5-Series continues to go for elegant and restrained, I find the XF and A6′s design a mixture of plain-Jane and snazzy headlamps while the Infiniti Q5o and Lexus GS are going for flowing elegance. The demur side profile continues with a simple character line to draw your eye from front to rear. One thing you'll notice during that eye-movement is the distinct RWD proportions that separate the CTS, E, 5, GS, XF and Q50 from the long-nosed Audi A6 and near-luxury FWD options. Out back the CTS' rump is a bit less exciting but employs all the latest luxury cues from hidden Exhaust tops to light piped tail lamps. I was hoping Caddy's fins would be further resurrected, but the "proto fins" on the XTS are absent. Pity. Obvious from every angle is an attention to build quality absent from earlier generations with perfect panel gaps and seams. Unfortunately, the first thing you'll notice out on the road is the coarse sound from under the hood. GM's 2.0L engine is no less refined than BMW or Mercedes' four-bangers, but the difference is you can hear the engine in the CTS. In fact, based on the overall quietness of the cabin (a competitive 67 dB at 50 MPH), I can only conclude that Cadillac designed the engine to be heard. I don't mind hearing the 3.6L V6, but most luxury shoppers would prefer not to be reminded they chose the rational engine every time they get on the freeway. On the bright side, because GM does not offer start/stop tech, shoppers are spared the inelegant starts and stops that characterize 528i city driving. While I'm picking nits, the 6-speed found in the 2.0T and most 3.6 models lacks the ratio spread and shift smoothness of the ZF 8-speed automatic found in most of the competition. The reason I label those flaws as mere nits is because of how the CTS accomplishes every other task on the road. Acceleration to 60 happens a 4/10ths faster than an E350, a half-second faster than the 528i, a full second faster than a GS350, and practically years ahead of the A6 2.0T. Part of this has to do with the engine's superior torque curve and higher horsepower numbers, but plenty has to do with curb weight. At 3,616 lbs, the CTS 2.oT is 200lbs lighter than the BMW or Lexus, 400lbs lighter than an E350. The comparable Audi A6 would be the front-wheel-drive 2.0T model with the CVT at 3,726. If you think that's an unfair comparison, the 2.0T with Quattro is 3,900lbs and does little to correct the A6′s front-heavy weight balance.

With the 2014 CTS V-Sport, Cadillac is aiming to turn the clock back to Cadillac's heyday. The 2014 V-Sport isn't the value option in the segment and it isn't even the cheapest option when you really think about it. Instead Cadillac has done something that many detractors thought impossible for an American brand: they quite simply made the better sedan. The 2014 V-Sport may bring a V6 to a V8 fight, but after a week with Caddy's new sport sedan it was easy to pick the winner. Unless you're looking to deck your BMW, Mercedes or Audi up with rare and expensive options, the CTS does just about everything the Germans can only better. Are you shocked? I was. Friday night drag racing at raclegal.com at qualcomm on the 1/8 mile pontiac GTO vs Cadillac CTS. GM revealed the all-new 2008 CTS at the North American International Auto Show in January 2007. The base model featured a 3.0 L variable valve timing V6 with 270 hp (201 kW) and 252 lb·ft (342 N·m) of torque. A second engine, a new 3.6 L direct-injection V6 VVT engine with 318 hp (237 kW) and 274 foot-pounds force (371 N·m) of torque was also offered. The new car came with a six-speed manual transmission as standard equipment, with GM's six-speed Hydra-matic 6L50 automatic transmission available as an option on all variants. On-demand all-wheel drive was offered with both engines when equipped with an automatic transmission.[7] Suspension, braking, and steering improvements from the previous generation CTS-V were designed into the new standard CTS. The second generation was wider and longer than the original, measuring 191.6 inches (4866 mm) long, 72.5 inches (1841 mm) wide and 58 inches (1472 mm) in height. Wheelbase remained unchanged at 113.4 inches (2880 mm), but with a wider front/rear track of 61.8 / 62.0 inches (1575 / 1585 mm), donated by the larger STS. Other changes included a revamped exterior, with a new, larger grille, slimmer headlights and taillights, side air extractor vents located forward of the front doors, and new nine-spoke 18-inch wheels, surrounding larger high-performance brake calipers and rotors. Available features on the second-gen CTS included a Bose 5.1 surround sound system, GM's Stabilitrak ESC system, a tire pressure monitoring system, a navigation system with real-time traffic and weather data, an integrated 40 GB hard drive for music storage, swiveling headlights, and remote starting. In 2008, the CTS was selected as the car that would re-launch the Cadillac brand in Australia and New Zealand.[8] During the 2010 model year, the GM badges were dropped, although early 2010 models still had GM badges. For 2006, two additional colors were added to the line up, Spice Red Metallic and Brazen Orange Metallic, while Midnight Blue Metallic and Yellow Jacket were dropped. Changes for 2006 included revised blacked-out tail lamps, illuminated steering wheel radio controls, faster moving power seat motors, and an interior power door lock switch. The climate control button for the A/C also had the word "Defog" added to it for the 2006 model year. Along with the 2005 model, the 2006 GTO was equipped with the 400 hp (300 kW), 6.0 L engine.[15] On February 21, 2006, Buick-Pontiac-GMC General Manager John Larson announced to dealers that GM would halt imports of the GTO in September, making 2006 the last model year for the new GTO. He stated the main reason for the cease in production was the GTO's inability to meet new airbag deployment standards that were going into effect in 2007.[16] This fate should have come as no surprise since this generation GTO was only intended as a limited production run for those 3 years from the beginning of the program.[17] The final production numbers of the 2006 Pontiac GTO are 13,948 cars, an increase from 11,069 from the previous model year. The last Pontiac GTO, which was also the very last Monaro-based coupe produced, came off the assembly line in Australia on June 14, 2006.[18] Total production for all three years was 40,808 vehicles.[18] Despite the lower than anticipated sales numbers and an unenthusiastic response by the American public, the new-age GTO has become a "sought after cult-car," with many loyal owners. Even though it was not a sales success, it was a vital lesson to GM that its regional divisions could not only work together, but that overseas divisions could engineer outstanding automobiles.[19]

The first generation Cadillac CTS-V debuted back in 2004 and came with an engine out of a C5 generation Corvette. This CTS-V flew under the radar for a few years until the release of the second generation car back in 2009. This model turned the automotive world on its side thanks to a fire-breathing supercharged V-8 motor that made 556 horsepower and set a factory production sedan lap record at the Nürburgring ring. First thing you notice is the shiny mesh, aggressive lower front fascia, massive black rims, and red Brembo brake calipers. The coupe itself is a cool looking car with the angular shape and metallic paint job. Out back the CTS-V sports an integrated rear wing and a trick center mount Exhaust. Under the hood is where the magic happens. The 2014 Cadillac CTS-V is powered by an LSA engine taken from a Corvette ZR-1. This Supercharged 6.2 Liter V-8 makes a whopping 556 horsepower and 551 lb-ft of torque. The power is sent through a 6-speed transmission (auto or manual) to the rear wheels. This luxury coupe looks good, sounds good, feels good, and most importantly goes like a bat out of hell. The interior is very driver focused. The model tested here is outfitted with the $3400 Recaro performance seating package. An Alcantara treatment is given to the steering wheel and shift knob. The real thrill of any V-Series Cadillac is driving it. The CTS-V offers you a great driving position with an unobstructed view of the road. More importantly though is the great engine and gearbox sending that power to the rear wheels which means fun. The ride is perfect thanks to the Magnetic-Controlled shocks that are usually found on high priced exotics. Now this may be the swan song for the Cadillac CTS-V coupe edition and if so we will always smile about how it lived.
