What Type of Fuel Should I Use, Grande Prairie Auto Group - www.gpautogroup.com
There's no doubt that the old days of just filling up with petrol are long gone. Apart from the alternative fuels - LPG, diesel, bio-diesel and ethanol blends - most petrol stations offer a choice of three types of petrol, with sizeable price differences between them. The main difference between the fuels is their octane rating or Research Octane Number (RON): regular unleaded is 91RON, while premium unleaded has a minimum rating of 95RON and higher grade premium fuels - Shell's V-Max, Caltex's Vortex 98 and BP's Ultimate - are 98RON. The higher the octane rating, the higher the pump price will be. On a new car, a higher octane rating can deliver better fuel consumption and engine performance, while additional additives in the premium fuels also help to keep components cleaner and better lubricated, which help your engine to run more smoothly and last longer. But on older cars, there may be no discernible difference in performance or efficiency, although petrol companies argue they are better for engine components. A lot of European cars require a minimum of 95RON, while some high-performance cars need a minimum 98RON, while others can run on 91RON but perform better on the higher octane fuels. If your car doesn't need to run on premium fuel, it won't hurt to fill it with premium; it'll just cost you more. The most important thing to remember is to ensure your unleaded car is filled with fuel with a RON number equal to or higher than its required minimum, which is usually printed on the inside of the fuel door flap.
