The Original Jr Dragster (Racing on a public street)
Before the Junior Drag Racing League was formed in 1992, I had what equated
to a Jr Dragster.
The car started out as a large go cart (A Christmas present in 1985), which
was eventually converted into a smaller version of its original design
(1988), and finally converted into a small rear engine dragster during
January of 1990.
The following video shows the evolution of my go cart.
All changes were made in the shop behind the home in which I grew up. My
Dad and I did all of the work ourselves.
On a side note, later in the video you will hear sounds of the race track
being played. This came as a result of my carrying a tape recorder to the
races that I kept in my pocket. I literally recorded hours worth of racing
sounds to play back while I was racing at home. This made the time I spent
racing in the yard and on the street in front of my house more realistic. I
also had a friend and my cousin who worked with me as my pit crew.
I did not realize how realistic my backyard racing truly was until we began
racing for real in 1992.
Additionally, you will see that we eventually added a second go cart
dragster that is driven by my cousin.
To time my runs, I held a stopwatch in my hand and would start and stop the
stopwatch myself. Additionally, you will see a couple of interesting
features of the go cart dragster. These features include a quick disconnect
steering wheel and a hand brake.
I hope you enjoy the video!
